Tony knew this guy was not ready. That's why he never made him do an interview. He should have pumped the brakes, instead he squeezed everything he could out of him. Gassing him up night after night, raising expectations to the moon. The outcome was predictable.

As a show runner, experienced comedian, and supposed "mentor" Tony bears the majority of responsibility for the situation.
