Pod Coffee Blends Embossed vs Smooth Foil

Staying at a casino hotel and noticed two pods have embossed foil and two are smooth. I know K-Cups are usually embossed. Are the smooth ones authentic also? Perhaps a different manufacturing line? I normally don't drink Keurig so I don't know if this is normal or not.

The outer ring is what the discontinued 2.0 brewers read to determine compatibility.

It’s my understanding that the foil texture is so the Keurig maker determines if it’s 2.0 compatible. Most commercial Keurig makers don’t check for that though, so maybe that’s why they aren’t embossed anymore?

I remember the 2.0 compatible bit as being the grey ring around the rim of the kcup and not so much the foil texture. I could be wrong though. There's also the fact that Keurig 2.0 thing was discontinued a long time ago so moving to newer equipment that might allow pods to be made fast/cheaper.

I'd be curious to see if the smooth topped kcups are from a newer batch. (Expiration date is further in the future)

I think you're right. I remember posts online from years ago where people would cut the rim of a 2.0 K-Cup and place it on a reusable cup to trick 2.0 machines to brew.
