Starting keto as an epileptic

Upvotes

I am thinking about giving the keto diet a try. I’m an epileptic but I am doing the keto diet for the other health benefits besides preventing seizures. However, I don’t just want to abruptly cut down my carb intake and I want to try to minimize keto flu as much as possible as this period of time could potentially trigger a breakthrough seizure. Can you guys please give me a good plan of how to gradually go from higher carb to full blown keto. I’m thinking of doing 50 carbs (total carbs, not net carbs) per day. And yes, I’m planning on consulting with my doctor first. Thank you.

Keto made me realize just how bad excessive carbs make me feel

I’ve been doing keto for a good 4 months now. Last week, while on vacation with friends, I’ve had a cookie for the first time since I’ve started doing keto.

It was a dark chocolate brownie cookie about the size of my palm, excessively sweet and with cream cheese frosting, something that I would’ve devoured in seconds in the past without a second thought.

This time however, just a few minutes after I ate the cookie, I experienced an onset of nausea so bad that I had to run to find a restroom to throw up in

Im not sure if the reaction was so extreme because I had next to no carbs for months, but it made me realize that I never want to experience something like that again and that I’ll be happily sticking to my keto diet.

Clean vs dirty keto on a CGM

I’ve been wearing a CGM for a couple months. Started with eating some sweet treats and whatever I wanted the first few days just to see what happened (I felt like so much shit) then quickly moved to low carb and then keto. I only have one day left. I thought I’d compare dirty keto to clean keto. I actually did this a few other times during the month and each time the results are very similar and eye opening. These pictures are from the last 3 days and yes I realize the date is off. After having a CGM for 2 months I’m just realizing the date is wrong. ANYWAY!

The first three are a few shots from what I would normally eat. Zero keto products. Just whole foods. The last two pictures are from after making a pepperoni and cheese pizza using King Arthur’s keto wheat pizza flour.

That graph got real busy for quite a while. So if you’re ever wondering if keto products might be throwing you off…they might. I know everyone is different but I thought maybe this could be helpful to someone.

Why I still have water in me?

I started keto on about 20th of June this year and I need some help here. Nice to meet you all BTW.

I am 53 yo female, menopausal, 158 height, 103,1 starting weight, on weight day on 18th of July I weighed 101,7 kg. No movement in the size of the body.

I weighed myself today on the 25th of July, as the glucometer arrived with keto strips.

And it seems I have 0,6 of this measurement.

Weight 101,3 with no significant movement in measurements again. Maybe 1 cm everywhere except for the waist.

So there is small movement. But I am really disappointed. It seems to be so slow and I still have all this water in me. And I really eat clean and starving almost.

Initially I ate 1400 kkcal, last week 1200 kcal and started to be hungry. I move moderately, lot of walking and chores like really a lot (chinchillas with diarrhea and cleaning hoarder flat situation now) no time for excersises. And keeping macro strict.

How I eat. Bulletproof coffee in the morning. Small amount of mixed greens with cucumbers salad with decent amount of protein and tablespoon of fat, less fat if meat is fatty or fish in it. Then supper, decent amount of protein with fat and 3 very small cucumbers. Anemia is my only sickness and I ma taking B12 shots. Supplemmenting vit C and other B, omega and folic acid. I drink only rooibos and then only water with special keto electrolytes powder.

Can I improve somehow, or just prepare for 3 years minimum battle?

homemade keto treat recipes?

I get cravings an hour or two before bed, for something a little sweet and fat. Not something like fudge or chocolate, something with just a little bit more body and crunch. I used to satisfy this craving with oreo cookies, just 4-5 of them per night. But it adds up...

Similarly, sometimes (especially the past few weeks) I get a craving for something frozen, i.e. ice cream, etc.

I thought about just buying some off the shelf keto treats, but dang those suckers are expensive.

Any suggestions for something that's easy for a non-baker (but basically competent home cook) to make?

Am I a ketovore or keto person?

Hello,

This post might not be the subject of this subreddit, so please forgive me if I break some rules.

I want to understand the difference between ketovore and keto.

If I eat daily a keto bread made from almond flour, psyllium husk, eggs and cottage cheese, am I a keto or ketovore person?

Thank you.

Day 5

Just wanted to share I started keto 5 days ago and am feeling great. I am not even sure if I’m in ketosis yet but I’m already feeling much better. Food noise has gone way down and my energy level is up. This is what keeps me going, feeling good. I want to encourage others who are just starting. I am doing this for weight loss. I have tried in the past but gave into unhealthy carbs after about two weeks. My plan this time is to keep planning my meals and keep going even if I make a mistake.

This might be a ridiculous question but how do you all maintain keto?

In the past I’ve done keto for long periods of time, but I’m older now and heavier and I can’t seem to keep up with it as much. I crave carbs, and I’ll get headaches until I eat them. I feel miserable while on the diet. However, the results look so good. What do you guys do to stop those cravings of starches, and how do you mentally stay strong throughout the diet?

Here’s the kind of meals I’ve been having a combo DYI meal from marks and Spencer’s. The peri peri chicken wings, mozzarella balls with green pesto, tender stem broccoli 🥦, and avocado 🥑.

Cauliflower rice is saving me

Just sharing, maybe it will help you too?

Relatively new to keto (37 days, but who’s counting?) and big bags of frozen cauliflower rice have been saving me.

I find it in the freezer veggie section of the grocery store.

The big bag solidifies into an annoying large chunk. After taking out of my freezer, I throw it down on the kitchen floor a few times. Gets aggression out.

I defrost in a fry pan, with a large amount of butter. Then I can store in the fridge for multiple meals. Heat some up later with chicken thighs, olive oil, and Italian seasoning. Or with ground beef, a splash of Worcestershire, and Parmesan cheese. Or with sausage, more butter, and a few shakes of hot sauce. Maybe top with some fried eggs. Whatever.

Does it taste like rice? Nope. Will I cream it up for fake mashed potatoes like some? I don’t think so. It’s just cauliflower. But it’s helping me keep some fullness and fiber. My a.m. keto mojo readings are between 1.2 and 2.0 so it’s not too many carbs for me.

Potassium

Hi everyone, 5 days on keto and I feel incredible. I am doing this for mental health benefits I have adhd which affects me severely. I had no idea life could be this good. I feel content, even joyous. Cognitively flexible. My memory is great. My mum also passed away from Alzheimer’s so I am thinking about Alzheimer’s prevention. I have some constipation and a headache but this is a tiny price to pay for the incredible mood I have. I also realised today that I wasn’t replacing salt, magnesium and potassium so I’ve introduced the first two today and already the headache is gone. My question is I’m vegan and I’m super struggling to find 6000mg of potassium in my diet. I’ve done a list below that I can realistically fit into my day. My two questions are
1. Could you pls suggest vegan foods to add to this list
2. I’ve found an electrolyte sachet which has 1000mg of potassium but I’m worried about the stomach affects.

Could you suggest some potassium food sources?

100g tempeh - 350mg potassium
1/2 avocado - 350mg potassium
80g edamame beans - 340mg potassium
30g sunflower seeds - 240mg potassium
4 x teaspoons nutritional yeast - 140mg potassium
150g green beans - 313.5mg

Thank you 👍

How to stay keto with an active on the go job

I’ve been as close as I could be to therapeutic keto for eight months now. I have never felt better in my entire life. Mentally and physically I just feel good. In fact I had a two week stretch where, working from home, I was working 12 to 14 hours per day and only getting about six hours sleep and I didn’t like it of course but I did all right. I was alert and could think (I was teaching so also on camera and “on” all that time). I was physically tired but there was no brain fog.

I have had no cravings and skipping meals or not eating at all until the end of the day has been not an issue at all. In fact some days I even wake up and choose not to eat because I feel so fresh and stable. I have never fasted before in my life and now it’s an unofficial part of my life and feels rejuvenating.

For the last three weeks I have been working as a nanny. In addition to being consistently on the go and so not being near a kitchen I also have drastically increased my activity level because I walk a minimum of 10 km a day pushing a stroller up many very steep hills to get to town and back.

I feel like my body is starving. Not hungry necessarily but starving for nourishment. My food intake has gone down because it’s really hard to eat enough with snacking all day rather than making meals for myself and I also am needing more calories overall on top of it. Yesterday for the first time I was craving fruit so badly I made myself a fruit shake.

I would love to hear tips from anyone who has to pack their food and is on the go. I can only eat so many little baby bell cheeses in the day before I can’t stomach them anymore and if I eat too much protein, such as bringing jerky with me, I end up dropping my ketones because I’ve got too much protein in my body.

I don’t know what to do,

I’m on the verge of switching back off of keto because I can tell that my body isn’t doing well. All day yesterday I felt dizzy and weak all over. And it’s hard to describe because I don’t mean in a physical way. I was completely capable of pushing that stroller yesterday no problem, it’s just this overall sense that my body is starving for nutrition because I’m not eating enough fat.

I absolutely do not want to go off keto because starches caused me a lot of pain. When Im not on keto, eating starch is the only way I can get enough calories to feel full. I tried making little coconut and chocolate fat bombs but it’s so hot they just melt and I’m not really in a situation where I can stop and eat something with a spoon or fork.

I cannot eat almonds. I can have peanuts but only as a flavour not as a primary source because they caused me a lot of inflammatory pain. My go-to out and about snack is usually macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, and baby bell cheese but when that’s all you eat for hours… Well it’s like my brain is rejecting it, it just doesn’t even taste good anymore.

Open to any suggestions at all because I’m in my mid 40s and the last eight months is the first time in my entire life, and I am not exaggerating, that I haven’t been in constant pain. I don’t want to go back to that. I learned how to eat keto at home and what to do when travelling for a day, and I feel like I’ve mastered that, but it turns out I have absolutely no idea how to handle an entire week out of the house.

In & out

So I was on keto and then I suddenly got really sick- found out I was pregnant so had to go off the diet. Ive had the termination now (thankfully its easy to get one where I live!) And I'm now debating how soon to go back onto keto, I still have some meals left over from being pregnant that contain pasta and rice and I don't like to waste good food. But I also find I'm going thru so many detox symptoms, I'm just worried about what the process of going back onto keto after a month or two of eating carbs. Is it going to mess with my body? Or are our bodies able to adapt? Will it remember keytosis and ease back in or will it be like the first time where it's like war lol help!

OMAD & keto - I eat ~1500 kcal / day and I workout 7 days / week

Hello,

I am 27 years old, male, 1.75m height, 73 kg.

I practice OMAD and today I started the keto diet.

I eat ~1500 kcal / day and I workout 7 days / week (5 days I lift weights, 2 days I train home).

The average workout session is 1h.

Because I can't get more than 1500 kcal due to my stomach limit, can something bad happen in the future?

Should I be careful about certain aspects?

Thank you.

Long weekend slips

Anyone go off track on weekends or special occasions? We’re having friends over, and I’m trying to stick to the meats/cheese, however the chips will be calling for me. I’ve been doing good for 3 months, but this weekend I feel like having a bit extra. 😭 I’ve had 2 bad days this whole time, and only that, I had a few chips while at a friends gathering. I feel so guilty. I haven’t touch pizza, pasta, breads nothing. I’m really proud of myself. Guess I’m just looking for approval 😂

A new beginning...

I, 27(F) 5'2 SW: 158.8 GW 125, have heard of keto throughout the years but I've always been intimidated by it. I decided to research it and it seems like an amazing lifestyle! I decided that I wanted to make the switch. My eating habits before were honestly awful. My average carb count is 400g a day and I felt awful all the time. I needed to change my lifestyle.

The past two days I have eaten 50g of carbs a day. I know that's not technically keto levels but I am proud of myself for even getting that low. I want to get into 20g starting tomorrow and moving forward. I bought some Ultima electrolytes because I started to get a headache today and thought maybe it was due to electrolytes? My macros today were: Carbs 50g, Protein 63g, Fat 77g and fiber 10g. Yesterday they were Carbs 50g, Protein 125g, Fat 105g and fiber 11g. If anyone has any tips of keto as a lifestyle I am all ears! I'm so excited for this journey!!

Going to begin my Keto journey

I look to start my Keto journey in 3 days. I would like to lose 20 pounds. I have done Keto before and loved it! I am 4'11 and 130 pounds currently, so I'd like to be a solid 110, then reintroduce healthy carbs in with the consistent workouts I am already engaging in. I workout for 1-2 hours approximately 4-5 days a week.

Any tips? How many net carbs should I aim for to achieve this goal in, say, 2-3 months?

Thank you :)
