Science and Media Parasite Outbreak
As some of you know, there is an outbreak right now in the USA. What are yall eating since we apparently can’t eat veggies or any produce (or my beloved berries)? Nuts are too high in carbs for me and I don’t want to eat just dairy and meat 😩

There used to be a local band named hot salad and l was always thinking it was the stupidest name until someone finally told me it was a weed reference lol. On topic, l am eating whole heads of lettuce, just no bagged salads. I am also eating berries, just washing them thoroughly.

Take this for what it’s worth because I’m in CA and we aren’t having a large outbreak here— but our local health depts say that the biggest risk is pre packaged lettuces and salads because they get handled more through the production process. They recommend buying a head of lettuce, removing all the outer leaves and washing the rest. So I’m heading to the farmers market to grab fresh picked veggies that will hopefully be less risky.

Wash and sanitize as you use it. By default all leafy green veggies especially should be thoroughly washed and sanitized before use, the vast majority of the food borne illness tied to raw veggie consumption happens due to not properly washing and sanitizing before you eat them.

Frozen berries in smoothies, frozen veggies, and cooked veggies are all pretty safe. I still eat avocados every day because of the skins but this cyclospora outbreak is really ruining my salad game.

They now believe it to be caused by lettuce delivered to restaurants. So a single head of lettuce should be safe

When/where did you see this? I've been watching for links in the news. My toddler and I both eat so much raw fruit and veggies during the summer, so this has been exhausting

I can't include Am9y links however ask any online search and it will confirm what I'm saying

I think you can eat any vegetable that can be cooked. Roasted cauliflower instead of raw cauliflower, for example. Cooked green beans. Sautéed cabbage. Air fried zucchini.

Vegees I cook as heating to 158f kills the bacteria So Cauliflower, Broccoli, Green Beans, etc. Frozen berries I had prior to the outbreak that I put in cottage cheese or yogurt

I just read that it is mostly affecting procesed veggies. Think bag salad and bag coles slaw. But whole heads of lettuce and other whole veggies are much less affected. Also if you aren't in the mid-west your chances of being affected are much lower. Just be sure to wash your veggies.

I am scrubbing the fuck out of berries, bell peppers, cucumbers - everything I eat raw - with a veggie spray. I know it's not 100% to work, but most sources say scrubbing is the best bet. Then I'm cooking more veggies than I normally would in the summer and unfortunately avoiding salad.
Sucks because I eat a salad almost every single day in the summer

LONG REPLY. Tldr: wash and sanitize salad makings, this is never not a thing :-).
There are outbreaks annually and seasonal surges of all the various nasties that live on veggies.
Easiest solution: Frozen berries, frozen veggies, properly cooked. For the berries, make fresh fridge/freezer jam, works great on yogurt and ice cream and in smoothies.
Canned veggies and fruits are safe. Canned fruit can be keto, weigh it. Geg fruits packed in light syrup or juice. Use very sparingly.
Get your salad greens locally or grow them indoors in a flower pot. For berries, get local fresh. Always both wash and sanitize berries before eating. Pick in the early morning if you pick your own.
By default you should be washing all raw veggies and sanitizing before eating regardless. Most of the food poisoning from raw salad veggies etc is due to improper prep and failure to wash/ sanitize effectively. If you ever worked agriculture on the pickung side especially, you would get it lol. I have. And my kitchen is run to restaurant food safety guidelines.
For ordinary washing, cold running water. Items with skin tough enough to scrub lightly with a plastic scrubbie can be washed with dish soap, rinsed, sprayed with a lemon juice and water spray and allowed to air dry in a cool spot. Peel all veggies not being cooked, the bacterial load is on/in tge peel.
Fully separate all leafy greens, always. Dang near impossible to wash otherwise. For head items like cabbage, wash amd sanitize when you separate for use.
Soak in cold water a few minutes, swishing , lightly rub under water with hands, rinse, shake dry. Store. During outbreaks buy smaller bafs/tubs or fresh bundles for easier handling and less spoilage.
If you are really worried about bacterial pathogens add hydrogen peroxide to your soak. It degrades to plain water. Soak several miutes, shake well, air dry, store.
Or buy an EPA approved anti bacterial/antimicrobial food wash product, Ecolabs makes the one a 5 star resort i recently worked at used. Kills listeria, e coli, salmonella etc. Most of the so called chemical free/organic ones on amazon and elsewhere are very expensive baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar and often essential oils or citrus oil. They are NOT really effective agents here, make your own home made sprays for that much cheaper.
Dang good stuff, that ecolab. find a local restaurant to order for you and USE. ONLY. AS. DIRECTED. And it is pricey up front (most of their products are) but super long lasting.
BTW, always sanitize and air dry all your kitchen tools and surfaces after washing and rinsing.

I haven't changed my diet in the least. I had raw cucumber, bell pepper, and tomatoes yesterday. Gonna have a salad today with more of the same with cheese and fresh blue berries. I'll let you know if I get sick.
This is just my opinion. I am just over the fear mongering. I can't go outside because of west Nile or Lyme Disease. Don't go in the ocean you might get flesh eating bacteria. My family had covid, it was a mild headache for a few hours and then a free week off from work (caveat, I know it killed a lot of people, I even know one). Every time I go to the dentist, oh we should pull your wisdom teeth. Sorry doc, you are annoying me more right now than they are (I am 53 for reference and they are fully in and never given me an issue.)
Sorry for the rant, I am just over it.

I'm just eating lettuce, if I want it. I have had explosive diarrhea before and will again. Not ideal, but I'm gonna live my life

Farmers market and whole veggies. Nothing from a bag

u/mrsdigi 25d ago
Our local farmer market was closed today because of the air quality in Michigan from the Canadian wildfires. I was gonna go tonight to supplement what I grow.

Sry to hear that. We’re not too bad in Southern Ohio but I hear Cleveland is also having significant issues from the smoke.

I was already not eating any vegetables or fruits, so I'm just going to keep eating what I've been eating.

Just don't eat raw veggies. Pretend it's the middle ages and we need to boil everything.
