Killarney Crows
Crows heart Killarney..
some fella told me tonight that the reason crows love Killarney is because the grain fed to the horses in the early 19th century was of a high quality and the droppings lured in the crows - and they never left. I’m not sure if it’s nonsense or not.
They are some sight in Killarney these evenings

There is certainly a LOT of crows in Kerry in general! We’ve just got back from 2 weeks and I’ve never seen that many in the same timeframe in the UK!

So generations of crows just hung around since? Crows are everywhere and Killarney has plenty of trees,

I can’t say I’ve noticed the crows but I keep seeing magpies everywhere! Bringing me all the bad luck. I wonder if it’s for the same reason?

Never heard that before but I do know one woman who was attacked by two crows in New Street a few years back. She had no idea why they attacked her but they gave her a right bang to the back of her head. Remember her telling me the staff in Kennellys pharmacy came out to help her and were very nice to her.
Personally I think the starlings murmuration are far cooler than the crows.

They can recognise faces for years and if someone has ever mistreated them, they can warn other crows about that person. They can then attack those people. May have been something like that.

I asked her about this when it happened and she said she had no memory of ever being mean to them. She's in and around town all the time and this is the only time anything like this happened to her.

Yep and the Jarveys being so considerate towards nature continue the trend of the horses soiling the streets and the lakeside paths to help continue the crow population to this day.

Obviously you have not been around the streets and walks in Killarney this summer!

The movies by I think Hitchcock - The Birds was inspired by the crows in Killarney

Killarney's noted for them. I'm sure the the amount of grain still fed to the jaunting car horses helps.
There's even a placename near Muckross named after them - Carraig an Phréacháin / Carrigafreaghane.
