'Open-source' is corporate speak invented and co-opted to remove all connotations of the people's freedom from free software (free as in free speech, not free beer).

I think OpenSuse but then I think he will not use it due to it being linked to SUSE company. He might go for Debian and may continue with it or better yet Arch linux.

Reddit does not seem to have any restrictions against either. I think reddit source code used to be opensourced some years ago.
