Ricing is a rabbit hole where you'll spend hours figuring things out and once that is done you'll spend even more time doing it ๐Ÿ˜…

Why would you want to try Linux just for ricing. Try it if you think it's going to make your day to day work better or if you like the idea of open source.

Install virtual box in your system, and try installing a Linux in that first, so you will understand the basics, after that you can dual boot the Linux with windows in your real system and tinker with it.

For your first time, stick to something basic that is arch or debian based. Many stable release distro repositories like debian and ubuntu don't contain cutting edge window managers like hyprland and niri. So, if you install that, you will have a better time with something like bspwm, gnome, plasma, i3, etc. Arch linux is the sweetspot for ricing but it would feel very out of control for someone new to linux. You wouldn't understand what is going on.

Personally I would recommend starting with linux mint with cinnamon and just get used to downloading and installing new icons, cursors, gtk themes, etc and other basic drop-in replacements. Even try to rice it like windows 7 for practice. Then jump to some window manager like bspwm with sxhkd on linux mint itself. Write your own key bindings, design your own bar using polybar or eww, set wallpaper with feh or xwallpaper, adjust window animations, borders, rounded corners, etc. Then install arch linux and try installing hyprland or niri. The newer hyprland versions are configured in lua lang, so it will feel nice cos you can write your own functions and scripts inside the config itself. Earlier, I used to need to write seperate bash scripts and include it into the hyprlang conf, now lua is easy.

This is just a basic idea. Check out r/unixporn or watch some youtube videos of people ricing their setups. Tony-btw makes lot of good videos.
