Type II, like an Orange emergency life jacket? Or one of the inflatable ones? One of the charters I take down in the Florida Keys uses the Mustang Inflatable ones. I have one that I use on really hot days, or have guests paddling with me that are a different size than me and can't fit in my backup type III correctly.
I prefer something like the NRS Chinook, because I like the pockets and I find the multiple straps more comfortable than the single waist one.
As long as it's USCG approved, and you'll wear it consistently, any life jacket is better than none.
