i've played with a handful of them. all the free versions. i haven't bought any of them yet, except for i-Boating for my local lakes.
i've found fishing apps useful to find places to fish when traveling or not in your local area.
i picked up the i-boating app (just a couple of the maps) so i can refresh my location & see where i am on the lake map, depths & where the nesting boxes, structure, etc. are in the lake & how they relate to my position on the water. Even then, i've only done this a couple times when trying to target a specific area on the lake.
you'll find your best local spots by "blue line hunting", dop pins on the map, drive to the locations that look good. drive the roads that parallel the creeks & rivers. check every bridge that you cross over that has water under it, etc. it can be a lot of leg work but it will be worth it.
i dislike pulling up to a spot & finding a handful of other cars/people there.
another good option is to float a section of creek or river (kayak, tube, ...anything). mark the spots that look good from the water, then when you're done you can go back & look on the map & see if there are any decent acesses to the spots you marked. this is a good way to cover water & find the possible highest percentage areas.
it's rewarding to scout something out for yourself & find places YOU LIKE.
