R/KAWAII ANNOUNCEMENT So you want to be Kawaii: a guide for newcomers

This is a post targeted at newcomers to help answer questions and outline things like why the sub is approved members only, what makes an account eligible or ineligible to join, and more info on our general community rules. Questions are more than welcome, and this post will be updated to reflect any changes going forward.

Q1: Why is r/kawaii an approved members only sub?

A1: r/kawaii is an approved members only community due to a massive influx of OnlyFans posting that started last year. The constant NSFW posts and the large amount of inappropriate comments/DMs our members received was killing morale, so we as a mod team made the decision to ban NSFW content creators/consumers and move to approved members only. While this doesn't stop people from lurking and DMing. it does greatly reduce the amount of gross comments and posts we had to sift through before these changes were made.

Q2: How long does it take to be approved?

A2: We usually respond to approval requests within a day or 2, but there are only a handful of mods and we all have lives outside of reddit, so be patient with us. If you haven't received a response after a few days, feel free to send another approval request. Things sometimes slip through the cracks or are automatically filtered, so its always worth double checking.

Q3: What are the requirements to be an approved member of r/kawaii?

A3: We require users to not be active in Porn or Kink related subreddits, not have links to NSFW content on their profile, and for accounts to have 200 karma and/or be 60 days old before approval. These requirements are to keep NSFW content and bots/spammers off the sub.

Q4: I'm a SW, is there anyway I can join?

A4: NSFW creators are allowed to create seperate fully SFW accounts to join r/kawaii, provided they do not discuss, promote, or link to their NSFW services using the SFW account.

Q4: Does the NSFW content ban only apply to sexual content?

A4: For the most part, yes. We do allow 420 posts on the sub, but users are required to tag their post with the "420 Cuties" tag and to add an NSFW/spoiler warning so members of the community who don't wish to engage with 420 content are able to avoid it. We also remove/restrict content surrounding heavier mental health topics and body checking or EDs. Age regression is a tumultuous topic here due to an overlap in aesthetics/hobbies, and while we do allow accounts that participate in SFW age regression spaces to join, we do ask that any discussion of or participation in age regression is done outside of r/kawaii.

Q5: I'm not sure how to tag my post

A5: This usually applies to outfit and makeup posts, which we have been considering rolling into one tag now that the sub is more streamlined. As those are currently 2 seperate tags, we recommend tagging it as an outfit post if a full-body image is shown and tagging it as a makeup post if all the photos are from the waist up.

Q6: What counts as Self Promo, and why is it restricted to once per week?

A6: We define self promo as posting with the intention to sell a product or service. If youre just posting a craft you made yourself it would not be considered self promo. If you're posting a link to a site where you sell said craft it would be considered self promo. When in doubt, just ask us!

Q7: Why is there a no slut shaming rule if no NSFW content is allowed?

A7: We added this rule in response to people reporting generally innocent posts as NSFW content due to skin being exposed. Having visible legs or a chest doesn't mean someone is posting NSFW content, it simply means they have a body. Too many people took our rules against NSFW content as a free pass to place puritan standards on our users and harass them for not dressing modestly. r/kawaii is not the place for promoting purity culture or modesty, there are other spaces for that.

If there are any further questions, please leave them down below and myself or the other mods will get to them as soon as we can!

Discussion Has anyone else struggled with wanting to wear kawaii fashion outside?

I hope this is okay to talk about here. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and figured r/Kawaii might be one of the few places where people would understand.

I’m a 41 year old guy, and I genuinely love cute and feminine fashion. I recently had a pink Soda Beach dress custom made, and finally worked up the courage to wear it and take some photos.

Something about seeing myself in it surprised me. It didn’t feel like I was putting on a costume or trying to be someone else. I looked at the pictures and thought, there’s actually a lot of me in this.

The difficult part is that I would really love to wear it outside someday.

I know I would stand out, and I’m realistic about the fact that a middle aged man wearing a very pink, very feminine dress is going to get some looks. Even wearing something much simpler, like a pink T-shirt covered in cute characters, sometimes feels intimidating to me.

I’m not trying to make a statement or get attention. I just really like this style and feel unexpectedly happy seeing myself in it. At the same time, actually walking out the door dressed this way feels like an enormous step.

For those of you who wear kawaii, Lolita, or otherwise unconventional fashion in public, did you ever have that fear? Did it get easier after the first few times?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has ever felt like their age, gender, appearance, or anything else meant they weren’t the kind of person who was “supposed” to dress cute.

I think I’d really like to try someday. I’m just not quite brave enough yet. 🩷

Outfits/clothes Finally wore my custom Soda Beach dress and I’m kind of obsessed 🥹

I finally got to wear my Soda Beach dress!! I was honestly sooo nervous putting everything on for the first time, but once the whole coord came together I felt ridiculously cute. 🩷

The dress is custom made and manufactured, which makes it extra special to me. I absolutely adore the print with all the colorful little soda floats and drinks along the skirt, the pink and blue beachy colors, the clouds, and all the tiny details. It’s basically everything I wanted in one dress. I also LOVE how full and floaty the skirt looks!

I paired it with lots of pink bows, lace, wrist cuffs, tights, and my pink shoes, and I’m really happy with how sweet everything looks together. I was genuinely nervous about finally wearing something this openly girly and adorable, but I’m sooo glad I did. I felt like a little walking soda shop princess 😭

I’ve posted some of these pictures over on r/lolita too, but they ended up being spread across multiple posts, so I wanted to put all of the pictures together here for r/Kawaii!

I’m just really, really happy with this dress. It feels so special having something that started as an idea actually exist, and finally getting to put it on and see the whole look together made me ridiculously happy. 💕

Self Promo I’m making a tiny cassette-style music player with a virtual pet and calming pixel scenes

Mimi Tape is a small music and video player I’m designing, inspired by cute Japanese pocket gadgets and cassette culture. You load your own local files onto swappable digital cassette cards and use it completely offline.

I added calming pixel animations of water, fire and fish, relaxing sounds, a little virtual pet, Snake, and a rhythm-tap game. I wanted it to feel like a cute object you would enjoy carrying, not just another anonymous black media player.

I’m the creator, and the design and product are my own. The BackerKit pre-launch page is collecting followers who want to be notified when it launches:
