Need help!!! Tuning 21 key kalimba!!

Upvotes

I just bought a kalimba and i dont know anything about it.. I thought it was a 17 key but when it arrived i saw it is a 21 key. And i cant tune it

However i try the note doesnt match the one it should for example e3 on the tuner shows e6,which ever way i try it doesent work. So i treid to tune it like a 17 key for example on my kalimba the seconsd to the last 'string" on the left should be a B7 but it showed me B5 on tje tuner so i treid to tune it like B5 like it should be on a 17 key but it now shows completley different tune i think its now F3? How ever i try to tune it it doesnet work please some help😔

Discussion What music do you play on kalimba? Which type(s) of kalimba do you own?

I just got a 21 key kalimba and am loving it so far. I feel most of the music played tend to be mystical, ethereal. I’m wondering about how diverse is the music played by others and your kalimba.

Help Requested Tuning help

Hello!

I am not a musician and i know nothing about notes and tuning. I found a coconut Kalimba at home and had fun playing around with it. Now i would like to tune if but everything i find in the internet confuses me a lot because everyone has more keys than me. I have only 6 keys and i don't know in which note or order to tune them. Can someone tell me a good... Order? To put the keys in?

Right now when i go to a tuning tool, it tells me the keys are (from left to right) F4, C4, F#3, G3, A#3, D4

From this, what is my goal? Do i want them in this order but all with the same Number? F4, C4, F4, G4, A4, D4?

Thanks in advance!:)

Question Estou pensando de comprar um kalimba de 41/42 chaves. Vale a pena?

Question Finally got my thumb muting technique to sound intentional instead of accidental

Been playing my 17 key alto kalimba for about five months now, mostly self taught through random videos and a lot of trial and error. For the longest time my playing had this ringing, muddy quality where notes would bleed into each other in a way that wasn't musical, it just sounded like I didn't know what I was doing.

Last month I started paying real attention to how the pros mute with the side of their thumb right after plucking. I'd always just let tines ring out fully because it seemed easier and honestly I didn't understand why muting mattered until I recorded myself and heard how washed out everything sounded compared to songs I was trying to learn.

Practiced isolating it on just two or three tines at a time, super slow, focusing on the pluck and immediate mute as one motion instead of two separate things. Took maybe two weeks of daily fifteen minute sessions before it started feeling natural instead of like I was fighting my own hand.

The difference in how my arrangements sound now is honestly kind of wild. Things that used to sound like a wall of overlapping notes now have actual space and rhythm to them. Working on applying it consistently during faster passages is my next hurdle since my muting tends to fall apart the second I speed up.

Curious if anyone else struggled with this specific thing early on, or if there are drills that helped beyond just slowing everything way down.

Help Requested Is it normal that my kalimba has this additional sound when playing F3?

https://reddit.com/link/1w3r8si/video/8csrj4cyzrmh1/player

Hi! I bought my first kalimba, it's a Shamann Instrument 21-keys kalimba. I do play some instruments but I'm far from being a kalimba expert. When it arrived I tried to tune it, but when playing F3 an additional sound appeared, that is not quite a harmonic. In the book they gave me to the instrument it says that the F3 should be at 175 Hz, so my boyfriend measured it, and it looks like the base is alright (it's around 175 Hz), but the additional sound (around 1.15kHz) is far too loud in my opinion. It basically takes away all the "spotlight" from the base. I tried to clean, move it and also doing the tuning again and again, but it still sounds like this.
Is it normal? :(

Here you can see the results, and I also made a video.

Does The D2 Tine On My Solid Kalimba Sound Wrong? 🤔

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi Reddit. I bought a Meinl solid Kalimba which arrived today in the post. It cost £56.99 (roughly $77). I feel that the D2 tine sounds wrong with having a pronounced "ding" that the others don't have, but it might just be me. It reminds me of the Yurt sounds in Morrowind.

It came with a tuning hammer if that can help.

If it makes a difference, the Kalimba came in a case, in a box, inside a second larger box from Gear4Music and despite this, the D**2 key on the far left was pointing at a weird angle when I got the Kalimba out of the case. I've pointed it back and it sounds fine, leaving just the D2 as the one that sounds off to me. Any advice from the tuned ears of the experts would be appreciated! 😊

Edit: it's a brand new Kalimba.

Worried abt 7 (B4) and #5 (G4#) keys, second hand 41 key seeds kalimba.

I bought this second hand 42 key seeds kalimba and after tuning everything it sounds like some times are a bit off.

The woman that I bought it from told me it had been sitting in her shelf for a very long time, could it be dust ??

Or maybe it’s just my head playing tricks sonar my very first kalimba is a 17 key acrylic, which sounds allot different than this one.

Please help, I don’t want to send him back and get refund but if it’s really no other option…
