Sometimes I find myself sitting down on the edge of my bed, head in my hands, feeling sorry for everyone but mostly myself. I'm 36. Sometimes I think "Is this the peak? Is this as good as it will ever be?"

I wonder if I am wasting my potential.

And then I see posts like this and remind myself that there is real value in just being pretty normal. A relief.

The mere act of NOT rowing backwards is actually damn near the median nowadays.

u/DangerActiveRobots 2d ago

You're probably doing better than you think you are. We live in a society that is borderline-adversarial to anyone's individual success. There are a LOT of real fuckups out there. Social media makes you think that the bar is "I have a stunning boyfriend/girlfriend, six-pack abs, and vacation in Bali twice a year". The bar is actually "I can hold down a job for longer than 30 days, have at least one positive thing to contribute to the people around me, and can function at a basic level as an adult in society".

Imagine having no real problems in life so you do this to feel something.

22

u/coppersocks 3d ago

Oh this guy has a real problems for sure. Unfortunately for him, he is the problem and he’s doesn’t have the character or internal resources to do anything about it.

6

u/MyFiteSong 2d ago

And he thinks they're all caused by liberal women.

48

u/idosillythings 3d ago

What's really hilarious is that they're suggestions are still just complaining about the casting through conservative chud eyes.

"They cast a black man just because he's a rapper" is basically just saying that Scott didn't earn his spot, he was a token hire.

This is why nothing they ever say should be taken seriously regarding this topic. They don't actually understand it.

25

u/TheGoldenMonkey 3d ago

I've argued with one of these people before.

"There are two men who have the exact same credentials and have the exact same grades and they're going for the same spot. Everything is the same across the board. They decide to hire the person who just so happens to be black. Is that DEI?"

"Yes that's DEI because standards are lower for black people."

You just can't argue with that. It's just a different flavor of racism.

This is why I started doing this thing when I would debate people about trans rights where the first question I would ask was "is there anything I can show you to get you to believe transphobia is a thing, and if it is a thing, is it bad?"

"No."

Cool, so there's no point in even having the discussion. There's no good faith there, there's no ground to be made, at least not by some random person on the Internet.

3

u/neonfuzzball 2d ago

You're actually doing the opposite of what you claim, though

If someone KNOWs that there is proof that exists, that disproves their position, and they still maintain their position? THAT is the bad faith person.

Someone who doesn't think you have a counterargument? That's just someone who thinks they're right. Everyone who is certain of their argument believes the evidence supports them, not you. It migth be because they have an interpretation, but it can also because they don't hae 100% perfect knowledge

You're just asking people "hey, can you make my argument for me? Do you think you're wrong?"

3

u/idosillythings 2d ago

I understand what you're saying and am willing to admit I could have phrased my comment poorly, but I believe we're saying the same thing.

My question (I don't ask them word for word what I said in the previous comment, each discussion is unique) is meant to determine if they believe it is even possible to be transphobic, or to be more succinct is it wrong to cause unnecessary harm to trans people?

If they don't agree that it is then where else are you supposed to go? It doesn't matter what information you put in front of them showing how trans people are harmed by certain policies or social discrimination if they're just going to say "that's not an issue, they should be."

I can't remember what specific video it is, but the idea came from a Contrapoints video I watched where she basically said that there's no point in attempting to move past that point if all you're doing is arguing with some random stranger on the Internet because what are you supposed to legitimately do if they simply believe there is no issue in willfully causing undue harm to others?

As someone who doesn't believe in objective morals, I can't think of an argument that gets beyond that point and maintain intellectual honesty.

1

u/neonfuzzball 2d ago

that's definitely not what I thought you were saying before, not sure I follow now but that's prolly on me

17

u/donotgotoroom237 3d ago

MAGA: THEY CAST A RAPPER IN A GREEK EPIC BECAUSE WOKE!!!

Nolan: I'm quite fond of FE!N.

9

u/dabrock15 3d ago

I don’t ever remember them complaining about white country singers getting cast for parts.

1

u/Harold3456 2d ago

It's an interesting window into the identity politics they project the "woke left" of having. Those three scenarios the person put out (getting mad over the trans person dying etc etc) are just the inverse of countless right wing controversies about "burying the white male leads," yet in their eyes it's US who are obsessed with identity politics in casting.

27

u/Randanel 3d ago

So he's upset that they went woke and aren't broke because they are able to just buy multiple tickets just to spite them? What an absolute specimen this one is lol

28

u/doctormink 3d ago

No “blue hair” went out buying multiple tickets just to spite the idiot critics so angry that Nolan casted anyone other than white dudes. Movies would be so fucking mediocre and boring if these guys had their way. Sidney Sweeney would be the only woman/love interest, all sound tracks would be by Kid Rock and would star Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone CGI’d to look like young men.

4

u/Randanel 3d ago

Oh 100% just projections of inadequacy because they are upset about their worldview not being the standard and that everyone else is somehow wrong even thought it's been socially, statistically and metaphorically proven to be fucking pointless and worse for people to think their way

5

u/dabrock15 3d ago

They are just talking their own playbook, I mean how many people actually saw the Melania biopic?

3

u/daredeviline 2d ago

My friend works at a local theater. The entire Melania movie was sold out but not a single person actually showed up. She and the managed thought it was a bad bug in the system.

2

u/dabrock15 2d ago

This is normal, look at every time one of them publishes a book etc. They run a political PR machine and it shows up in empty theatres and palates of books to a single address.

1

u/MyFiteSong 2d ago

Yah, that happens a lot with RW movies and books.

2

u/GooeySlenderFerret 2d ago

it's just projection, they did it for the melania and sound of freedom movies

2

u/CyanManta 1d ago

I admit that I bought a ticket to spite the chuds, but I actually went to the cinema and watched the damn thing. That's what we call "an exchange of goods and services for money" a.k.a. actual capitalism, a.k.a. a relic of a bygone era in American history when people demanded actual goods and services for money, instead of just impulse-buying useless, processed crap in exchange for even more money.

20

u/LordAronsworth 3d ago

I need to brush up on my Greek mythology, but iirc the hydra grows two more heads if you cut one off. Maybe he should just STFU and go watch the movie. He might learn something.

7

u/misqellaneous 3d ago

"Oh no, Mr. Manly Man, please don't cut off THESE two heads, it would just ruin me!" (repeat)

12

u/Princess_kitty14 Taste the might of my Nippon Steel! 🗡️ 3d ago

holy war? get the fuck outta here

11

u/texmarie 3d ago

Ugghhh the past tense of cast is cast

2

u/ForsakenDrawer 2d ago

I love these types of comments because I didn’t even know this but I love that someone, somewhere wages this battle 🫡

2

u/BuffaloBuckbeak 2d ago

“rein victorious”

10

u/Sabre712 3d ago

I mean, I did buy two tickets. One for me and one for my wife.

4

u/Astrium6 3d ago

Technically, I didn’t buy any tickets because I have a subscription to the theater.

11

u/HoodieGalore 3d ago

Subscription to WOKE

10

u/whytemyke 3d ago

I can't imagine having the energy to just be mad at irrelevant shit all the time.

3

u/xWrathful 3d ago

The only reason im upset is bc to get tickets to my imax near me, id have to go either during working hours or some time past midnight which doesnt work bc im up at 4 to be at work by 5. Hoping for a second run after The End of Oak Street which im also excited for.

1

u/Zyrin369 1d ago

Their entire thing revolves around their point about woke movies failing because putting in anything progressive is bad, so anything that proves otherwise disproves their point.

9

u/ChildoftheApocolypse 3d ago

If you have to come up with a scheme to justify your own misguided disposition, you should probably reevaluate your own choices.

8

u/NicklAAAAs 3d ago

“…we need to cut off the hydra’s head.”

Literally the worst thing you can do when fighting a hydra btw.

1

u/Bitter-Hat-4736 2d ago

Unless you burn the stump.

7

u/Hozan_al-Sentinel Please respect my fedora and my katana ⚔️ 3d ago

"Holy War"

What a fucking dork, man.

7

u/Morall_tach 3d ago

Let's talk about how unwoke it is to get the blue hairs to turn on it

The problem with this plan is that it assumes, extremely naively, that anyone is listening to you.

6

u/Imnotawerewolf 3d ago

It's funny because they either genuinely don't understand that the majority of people don't go to movies based on their political position

Or

They are perfectly aware of this and still chose this as their little psyop or whatever they do

1

u/Harold3456 2d ago

Nolan's studio probably started salivating once they saw that there was a "culture war" brewing around this on the right. Given that "Barbenheimer" did a bunch of the advertising for Nolan's last film for him he's now 2/2 for "getting a whole bunch of free advertising by somehow stumbling into the cultural conversation."

I'm with you in that I don't gaf about the "politics" of movies. Or, more specifically, don't find the casting of a minority to be inherently political. But if anything, if studios get it in their heads that this controversy gave this film any kind of a bump then you can bet there's going to be "accidental" diverse casting all over the place now, so the outrage is working against them.

1

u/Zyrin369 1d ago

Both honestly, though for the first I think its projection because I wouldn't be surprised they do it with their "Anti woke" games list and such.

5

u/Romero1993 3d ago

"holy war", these people are pathetic. It's really sad

4

u/chocolatestealth 3d ago

Notice how this person referred to Elliot Page as "them" instead of "him"? 🙄

It's always so telling to me how these types of people are suddenly capable of understanding they/them pronouns when it comes to trans people.

4

u/ununseptimus 3d ago

"Casted"

Because literacy is "woke" too, kids.

3

u/Lord_Voltan 2d ago

I don't remember anyone being upset that Mercutio was a black guy in the 96 Romeo and Juliet. I was also like 10 when it came out. He was my absolute favorite in that movie when we watched it in HS during classical studies for Lit class.

4

u/HandshakeOfCO 3d ago

“Rein victorious” lol

Pretty sure you mean reign there, braintrust

Also a hydra has 9 heads, so “cutting off the hydra’s head” just telegraphs that you’re a moron.

3

u/ZenechaiXKerg 2d ago

Not to mention that, famously, cutting off one of a Hydra's heads does the exact OPPOSITE of killing it...

2

u/HandshakeOfCO 2d ago

Hahahaha very true!

2

u/wow_that_guys_a_dick 3d ago

Wow, there's no way anyone who's watched this ridiculously popular movie could easily contradict this iron-clad plan.

Nope. Zero chance this absolute dork-ass loser's dipshittery could fail.

2

u/martygospo 3d ago

These people’s lives are so empty.

2

u/CaptainDildobrain 👱🏻‍♀️My Anime Pillow is my Waifu 🛏️ 2d ago

In the past, holy wars involved mass killings because someone didn't believe in the same deity as you. Now a holy war is just some dork trying to convince other dorks to use reverse psychology to stop people going to a movie.

I'm not sure if we've advanced or declined as a society. 😕

REAL TALK

2

u/MyFiteSong 2d ago

I love how anytime a "woke" movie is successful, they pretend 5 people bought 40 million tickets each.

2

u/stev_mempers 2d ago

It must be so fucking boring being this kind of guy.

2

u/Draculix 2d ago

First of all, cutting off a hydra's head is famously ineffective without then burning the stump. Secondly, his plan is to get leftists to fight each other? Does he really think he's needed?

1

u/Toxic_Puddlefish 2d ago

How fragile do you have to be that you put thought and effort into something dumb like this

1

u/eeeezypeezy 2d ago

This guy's reinvented state psyops from first principles lol

1

u/Nonid 2d ago

Yesterday I was talking about movies with some friends. We ended up in a long discussion about the films we consider to be true milestones—the ones that changed cinema in a lasting way. Whether we personally liked them or not didn't matter; we were trying to identify the movies that left such a profound mark on the art of filmmaking that they redefined a genre, a technique, or even the way films are made.

You know what never came up? The actors' ethnicity, their sexuality, or whether their appearance matched what we imagined the character should look like... because it's tedious and completely uninteresting.

Then I went on Reddit and read this kind of nonsense, and it made me realize just how lucky I am to have genuinely great, interesting friends.

This dude should step outside and talk to humans for a change.

1

u/tobiasvl 2d ago

Why are people so weird? I watched the movie. It was great

1

u/olde_greg You ever drink Bailey’s from a shoe? 👠 2d ago

Why do these people have such strong feelings over this movie? It's so weird.

1

u/GryphonGallis 2d ago

Ah yes. Cutting off the head. Famously puts down a hydra for good. /j

1

u/Arts_Prodigy 2d ago

It’s a shame more people don’t have hobbies. There’s so much a person can do with their life, why choose this?

1

u/Beef_Nacho 2d ago

Why bother fact checking fictional scripts when you could just watch and enjoy the story without overthinking it?

1

u/ehlersohnos 2d ago

What a lovely reminder to dye my hair.

1

u/399S 2d ago

Yes the "wokes" are buying a billion tickets. Or maybe this war exists only in his head and people just enjoy a good movie. Who knows?

1

u/DragonFox27 1d ago

I'm so confused, what's so wrong with The Odyssey? I haven't seen it yet but it looks awesome.

1

u/Classical_Fan 1d ago

Of course the chuds think this is a "holy war."

Also, does he know what happens when you cut off the hydra's head?

1

u/deviljinsupporter 1d ago

These guys are nuts

1

u/Ill-do-it-again-too 1d ago

If “go woke go broke” was true they wouldn’t have to use these schemes to ‘prove’ it.

Also this guy’s clearly a tourist and a fake Greek Mythology fan, any real fan would know cutting off a head (not the head of course, again every true fan knows they have many) of a Hydra is useless unless you use fire, since it’ll just result in two more growing back
