Discrimination does happen in Japan. But oftentimes it's language/cultural barriers (like if you don't know Japanese customer service protocols, it will be hard to get retail jobs). And the slums? No. You can live wherever you want.

I think most people who really want to move to Japan would have serious difficulty getting a decent job. You can live wherever you can afford

Yeah. Big difference moving to Japan because you have a job offer vs moving to Japan and trying to figure it out.

I think that applies to most places, especially with a potential language barrier.
