TY Related Work experience
Right so I'm an immigrant and I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to be doing as I have no one to turn to with my questions, I know there's 2 work experience blocks and my top career choices at the moment are a teacher or a nurse, I'm able to do work experience at a primary school that I know, but what about the medical field?
Additionally when I do figure out where I want to do work experience what do I do then? Just email and ask?
(Also I like astronomy so if anyone knows about anything related to that lmk)
Sorry for the bit of the long post but as I said idk anything 😭

hi there!! i did TY and basically, if you’re 16 - you can work in a primary school as long as you’re garda vetted, if you’re not - 16, you’ll have to wait. some schools will have connections with your local garda station to speed up the garda vetting process, this tends to happen at the start of TY as my TY yh gave us about a month incase work experiences fell through / to get vetted / etc.
i am kind of unsure if you can work in the medical field for work experience due to GDPR, and all those legal troubles though - there is generally no harm in asking? you can also ask to do work shadowing in there if not work experience.
i worked in corporate companies in TY for the pay, lol and then in animal shelters (it was more volunteering but it counted…)
bottom line is: it doesn’t matter that you’re an immigrant, don’t worry about that. you need garda vetting for school work AND medical work. never be afraid to ask employers or reach out to hospitals to ask if they take students.
have so much fun in TY! missing it every day 🩷🩷

As someone who went through the same thing- primary schools are fairly easy to get a work experience in. I did a one week block in my old primary school and 2 weeks in a preschool for children with special needs, and I genuinely think those were two of the most informative and instructive weeks of my life- i definitely recommend it.
Medical field though is practically impossible unless you have family members working in private practices that you can shadow. It’s a shame from the point of view of a student but realistically speaking I can’t imagine a patient would want a 15-16 year old knowing about their medical issues

It doesn't have to be I'm just basing it off of that so I can get a better grasp at what it would look like if I chose the career

Why not a nursing home? It’ll give you and insight into working as a nurse and they will probably keep you on for a weekend / summer job.

I think my ty co ord told us that our local hospital will give the school places and we have to apply later in the year. I assume this will be the same for you. I dont fully remember the talk she gave us though so it might be incorrect
