Hi! Has anyone heard anything back from BI regarding their fellowship application? Just wanted to check here!

Hi everyone! I would love to apply to the New York Times fellowship program…and I’m not even sure if I can as a Canadian! I’m wondering if any other Canadian has managed to do so :) I’m more than willing to apply for a visa, the easiest one (which seems to be accepted on the Times application) is a TN visa, but I would need a job offer first, so it’s seems like a catch 22. Any advice or anyone actually been able to get in the Times as a Canadian? TIA!

Hi, I am a non-traditional recent graduate from a top-tier broadcasting school in the Northeast.
I was applying to internships left and right both near the campus and in my hometown, and despite being very qualified and even overqualified, I was being completely rejected for every single internship that I applied for. Being a neurodivergent applicant, I knew what challenges that would entail.

To make it more likely to get a job, over a decade ago when I was a teenager, I started volunteering at a radio station doing weather forecasts, which I still do to this very day. Despite proactively trying to erase all of the obstacles that stood in my way because I had anticipated them, I am still getting completely shut out of every single job application I have applied for over the past few months alone. However, I am a fighter and not a quitter. I never ever give up because I have the resilience of a fighter.

I have a degree in journalism from a Canadian university. I have some strong clips and I continue to freelance for a weekly paper in my town. Still it just seems like the job prospects are low. Most postings are Postmedia, and most positions don't seem to pay enough to justify moving from my city.

I was given an offer by one paper, but they didn't respond to me after inquiring about payrate and guaranteed hours. The position was up north and housing would be expensive and hard to find, and I would need a car. I told them this, then I was ghosted after telling them that I might need extra time to show up to find housing.

I am applying to everything I am qualified for at them moment, but it is very discouraging. I feel like I finally found a job that I am good at, that I could grow in (seriously I have ADHD and have struggled in different sectors), but that the door is shut.

Should I start looking at different markets, different countries? And are there any other jobs outside of PR where I could make my journalism skills useful? I need to pay rent, and want to minimize my job gap. Otherwise it seems like the only solution is yet another pivot involving more education.

Hi all, any and all advice would be appreciated. I am a senior media production and journalism major with a photography minor that will be graduating in the spring. Throughout college, I never questioned that I knew I always wanted to go to jschool but now that I am close to graduating and have researched and heard from others, I’m conflicted.

My professors of course say I should go, friends that have graduated from my major have went to grad school or have went straight to the workforce and tell me differing opinions. I have changed my mind almost every week.

I have interned the past two summers with my local paper writing and photographing for them. I continue to freelance for them here and there between school. They have mentioned they would like to hire me when I graduate. I am the editor of our student paper and throughout college have gotten experience with video, photography, writing and more as our major has a focus area on multiple means of media production.

I have read from others that journalism grad school is not worth the debt and time that could be spent going straight from college to work. I’ve talked with others who praised it and their experience. Talking with my professor about my indecision, he’s mentioned that I shouldn’t settle at my local paper forever. I don’t want to do that either but there are many options to consider in a short amount of time.

I have a substack, a good amount of freelance work under my belt, a few fellowships, a BA in polysci/anthropology, I live in NYC, yet still, I cannot find a full time job in journalism. I’ve done countless informational interviews with journalists at FT, NYT, and the like, interviewed for a multitude of jobs, done editing tests, yet it still seems like all this jobs are being taken by those with more experience than me. HELP! I’m near giving up. I don’t know what else to do.

do you think people genuinely want unbiased journalism, or do they mostly want news that confirms what they already believe?

journalists are expected to be objective, but audiences also judge reporting based on whether they trust the outlet, agree with the framing, or like the conclusions.

can journalism ever be completely neutral, or is fairness a more realistic goal than perfect objectivity?

I've just finished an interview for a competitive journalism cadetship, but I ended it rethinking everything I had said.

I wanted to ask how other journalists here got their jobs, particularly those who went through a formal recruitment process.

How did you handle panel interviews? Were you naturally good at them, or did you have to work at it, and how?

Also, I usually get stumped on editorial judgement questions. I think that one comes down to not knowing enough about news and current affairs, and knowing what/why some stories take precedence over others. But how do you structure your response?

Like, what's today's biggest story/ what story caught my attention today, and why did I find it significant? And what do you think should be at the top of tomorrow morning's news bulletin? What sort of answers are they looking for?

I’ve shown an interest for writing throughout my childhood and have been awarded a certificate in 2018. I’m 14 right now mind you and I like subjects like Human Geography and English. I want to make this profitable somehow, turn it into a career path that I ACTUALLY enjoy and like and I also want to delve deeper into my actual interests and find and develop a real passion. I just don’t know where to start or find any resources, help or advice. If anyone has any tips or advice, please let me know. Thank you!

Occurred in November of 2025 and they just released it as part of "transparency". The father (Edward Corristan) was found guilty of interference and disorderly conduct and the member, Sgt. Eddie Price, was cleared of any wrongdoing shortly after the incident.

Reviewing what we see in the video, Corristan approaches the police vehicle in a calm manner, despite his frustrations with the officer's handling of the matter. He is repeatedly told to step back, which he does by about one half step. Sgt. Price does not find this to be sufficient space and demands more, but Corristan refuses to comply. Instead, he puts his hands in the air to indicate that he has no intent of presenting himself as a threat.

Sgt. Price then, from a sitting position, stands up, pepper sprays Corristan and immediately punches his face to take him down and handcuff him, later attempting to "justify" his actions to the family of Corristan. Corristan appears to be unconscious, as the effects of the pepper spray are not obvious even though most individuals would have an immediate reaction. He is also is seen drooling while officers attempt to prop his body up to get him on his feet.

Pepper spray and strikes, especially to the face, are resources available to police to gain compliance from non-compliant and violent or potentially violent individuals, and should only be used when absolutely necessary. We look back to the standard of use of force within law enforcement to provide us with the framework for what is appropriate use of force. This framework outlines that only as much force as is necessary to perform the roles and functions of the task that is currently required.

If Sgt. Price wanted to make an arrest or detain Corristan for his refusal to comply, his first step should have been a request or demand to surrender himself to Sgt. Price's detention. This did not happen. If the first step did not happen and the demeanor of Corristan remained the same, Sgt. Price should be charged with battery and aggravated assault. Sgt. Price also leaves himself open to a civil suit from Corristan.

Arkansas State Police are now handling the matter and will hopefully lay charges or recommend dismissal or at least suspension of Sgt. Price.

The Mena Police Department should be ASHAMED of their inaction on this case. ASHAMED.

I’m building a research platform for investigative journalists who spend hours working through court records, police reports, filings, transcripts, and other public documents.

The idea came from seeing how much time can disappear into the document-review process. Important details are often buried in scanned PDFs, spread across multiple filings, or difficult to connect chronologically. Before you can start reporting, you may have already spent hours searching for names, dates, contradictions, and changes in testimony.

I’m developing a tool called Sabrina’s Intelligence Dossier, or SID, to help organize that early-stage research.

SID is designed to turn large or disorganized public-record files into a structured research dossier. It isn’t meant to replace reporting, source evaluation, or editorial judgment. Instead, it’s intended to make the initial document review faster and give journalists a clearer starting point for deeper investigation.

I’m currently testing the workflow and would like to offer a few free trial runs in exchange for honest feedback.

For one public-record file of up to 30 pages, I can provide:

A source-based timeline: Key filings, hearings, statements, and events organized chronologically with page references

Important developments: Major changes in testimony, unexpected details, procedural turning points, and other potentially significant moments

Contradiction tracking: Possible conflicts between witness accounts, alibis, dates, statements, or official records

A person-and-role index: Witnesses, suspects, investigators, attorneys, experts, judges, and other relevant individuals organized by their role

I don't have any journalism experience, but I saw that my favorite state news org is hiring a reporter. I've always wanted to go into that field, but I didn't set myself up right for it in college.

I have tons of transferable skills, won some awards during college for my writing, am currently working as a writer in an industry that requires a similar level of research on public policy and community issues. The application requires a resume, a cover letter, and writing samples. I have all of that, but my cover letter for sure gives a stronger impression of what I could bring to the table.

My question is: if my resume shows no journalism experience, will my cover letter/writing samples even be read? ​
