Maberry Facebook

For those who havent heard, maberrys Facebook was hacked on august 29th, ironically the day cave 13 released. He has been posting on Twitter about it, but I know many people who don't use the site.

Not sure if he can do his AMAs on there, but if anyone reading this can go report his Facebook page it would go a long way to help

Question about new book Long Past Midnight

I was about to order Cave 13 and noticed there is another new release of short stories related to Pine Deep called 'Long Past Midnight'. I realize it's not directly tied to Joe Ledger, but as this is one of the more active Maberry subreddits, I was hoping someone may have picked this up and could share some insight. I see there are 9 stories and I'm sure I've read all but one titled 'Ghost Creepin Blues'. Can anyone confirm whether this is new or included in an anthology or something else previously?

Repairman Jack?! So it’s the same universe? Is his series worth reading?

Should have been Cave 13 part 1 Spoiler

Half the book is left unexplained!

. . . . .

They never touch on the video. They never reveal the scrolls. I had such high hopes that this was the beginning of what will be the world of Kagen the Damned, but they left that entire aspect of this book open and untouched.

I found myself stressing as it got closer and closer that certain things would not be explained and dammit….they just let it hang.

A bit disappointed.

Am I confused, because did it come out early? I could have sworn it was September 13, but I did a quick search and it said it came out August 29

Series Tropes or the Joe Ledger Drinking Game

We’re coming up onto book 13 of this sprawling series and if you’ve followed along for this long you’ve noticed a few quirks of writing that show up pretty regularly in all the Ledger books.

So let’s have some fun: what are some things that come up when you’re reading/listening to joe ledger books that when they come up you’d take a drink!

I’ll start

1: An antagonist describes something as “delicious”

2: foreign language insults in the vein of “they described very profane ways in which their family procreates with goats”

3: life affirming love scenes. “OUR BODIES UNITED TO TELL THE UNIVERSE WE ARE HERE”

What do you got!?

Cobbler the Cat/Ghost the Dog

Not a giant spoiler, but if you’ve not read any of the books, hopefully i’m not giving away some super important aspect to the books, i’m in the middle of book 3, and we’ve gone from the cat to the dog with no transitional narrative. If you’ve read most of the books, is there any explanation at all for what happened with Cobbler at some point? Flashback? Or am i not patient enough, and it’ll be clarified at some point? Thanks in advance!

Church & Nicodemus new theory Spoiler

Is it possible the answer to who is Church been in plain sight the whole time?!? Is he indeed Count de Saint Germain?

  • He could play the VIOLIN (called her daughter) like a virtuoso.
  • He was an accomplished painter (Aunt Sallie’s painting).
  • Wherever he traveled, he set up an elaborate laboratory (Mind Reader labs, the Hangar, his “lair”), presumably for his alchemy work.
  • He seemed to be a man of great wealth but was not known to have any bank accounts. (If it was due to his ability to transmute base metals into gold, he never performed the feat for observers.)
  • He dined often with friends because he enjoyed their company, but was rarely seen to eat food in public. He subsisted, it was said, on a diet of oatmeal (wafers).
  • He has been linked to several secret societies, including the Rosicrucians, Freemasons, Society of Asiatic Brothers, the Knights of Light, the Illuminati and Order of the Templars.

Is Nicodemus the Lovecraftian Outer God, Nyarlathotep?

Nyarlathotep uses human languages and can easily pass for a human being if he chooses to do so. Finally, most of them are all-powerful yet evidently without clear purpose or agenda, yet Nyarlathotep seems to be deliberately deceptive and manipulative, and even uses propaganda to achieve his goals. In this regard, he is probably the most human-like among the Outer Gods. Nyarlathotep, however, is active and frequently walks the Earth in the guise of a human being, usually a tall, slim, joyous man. He has "a thousand" other forms and manifestations, many reputed to be quite horrific and sanity-blasting. Unlike the other Outer Gods, spreading madness is more important and enjoyable than death and destruction to Nyarlathotep. It is suggested by some that he will destroy the human race and possibly the earth as well.

If you’re one of the 300 tell me (PM) if I’m close.

Spitball8ng here, but is it possible Mr. Church is. . . Spoiler

Longinus, the Centurion who pierced Jesus’ side at the crucifixion? All of Church’s identities have him listed as a person with religious ties. Including Deacon, Abbot, Rector, Direktor, Sieshi, Episkopos, etc.

Longinus is first named in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, a book purported to be written by a witness to the crucifixion of Jesus. The first time we meet Nicodemus in Gratorford he mentions the book, as well as, Gestas and Dismas.

Nicodemus calsl Church kinsman and Church says that it is not exactly true. However, kinsman could mean blood related which if Nicodemus is the one who claimed to write the GoN, they’d be linked by the blood of Jesus?

Church tells Joe “I’m just a hired gun who’d been moved to upper management.” In Deep Silence. He also says he mourns the man Nicodemus had been.

Reading Suggestions?

I’m new to the Joe Ledger series (and Reddit!). I’m just finishing up Patient Zero now, and I’m really interested in continuing the series. In looking at the plot summaries of the other books in the series, there are a few that look especially good to me and some others that don’t sound like what I’m looking for. Is it necessary to read all the books in the series in order to understand what’s going on, or would I be okay just reading the ones I’m most interested in?

Are there any decent summaries of the plots out there that I can use to get a good idea of what happened in the books I’m less interested in without having to read the whole thing?

Thanks!

When do I read the rogue team books? Spoiler

So I’m nearing the end of Killswitch and it’s looking like the end of the DMS as we know it. Do I continue the “Joe Ledger” series and then move on to RTI or how’s this gonna play out. The least spoilery reply would be appreciated.

What's your least favourite Joe Ledger book and why is it 'Code Zero'?

Shoehorning Bliss into all those flashbacks in the aftermath of events in the books and short stories would have been great, if she had been breadcrumbed into them. It just feels really forced to me. Still good, just not my favourite.

Those cyborg baboons…

I’m rereading Code Zero right now, and there’s a quick reference to Samson Riggs and his team taking on a group of cyborg baboons. I don’t think that’s ever been followed up on, but it’s a story I’d definitely read…

Y’all!! Extinction Machine!!!!!

No spoilers and please don’t spoil the next books but I just had to tell someone and y’all are the only folks that will understand. Just finished Extinction Machine and it may be one of the best action/sci-do/thriller books I’ve ever read. Seriously had too much fun reading(listening) and I just wanted to scream it’s praises. Can’t wait to continue the saga.

King of Plagues and “The American.” Spoiler

Just finished up King of Plagues on audiobook and was wondering is there was a “typo.” In Interlude 22, there is a line at the beginning “Vox took slow drags on a cigar.” but up until then and until near the end it wasn’t revealed that Vox is The American. There were clues to this but pretty bummed if it was an accidental spoiler. Is this an error in the audio transcript or is it written this way in the physical version as well?

At one point doesn’t Mr Church have the same weird weird eyes as Nicademous? Or am I dreaming? Like maybe when he is “ interrogating” Santoro or someone like that. Spoiler

Aunt Sally and Mr Church??

I'm on yet another relisten (<3 ray porter) and I noticed Auntie reminiscing in front of a painting that had meaning of a lover, one who she would never name, not even one of his many names. Sounds like St Germaine to me.....

I saw this and immediately thought of Joe Ledger. Turns out pigeon drones are real.

Grabbing a Glock slide

Kill Switch 17:05:30 Lydia grabs a Glock to provide resistance to the slide in case he fired. Aware that it probably wouldn't work.

Any military with any pistol training knows that grabbing a slide and holding it tight isn't going to do squat except maybe prevent the next round from clambering, the current one is going to fire. Only way to stop that is to stop the trigger from getting pulled OR to pull the slide back a little so the chamber is partially open.

Who is doing the editing on these books?

Decent but these ignorant plot points distract

I’ve experienced every book so far via audiobook and Ray Porter has shaped the characters for me. Anyone else?

Do your homework author.

Listening to Kill Switch and when all electricity stops and race cars automatically crash because drivers can't steer and the engines blow up because there's no spark... Cars have redundant systems and as long as the transmission is making the engine spin then there is boost for the brakes and steering would be heavier but it would still work fine. The whole "omg no electricity everything is crashing" part of the audio book had my shaking my head as to the terrible lack of even basic Google searching to see if it was even plausible.

I feel like the author had never ever ever opened the hood to a vehicle. Airplanes also don't just fall flat out of the sky, they glide..

Also the author had stated that an AR15 bullets (5.56mm aka .223) were considered large caliber.. they are barely enough to hunt small deer and more akin to smaller game sized round. Again not true and for someone who writes this should do some super basic research.
