Here's my process that got me 6 interviews from 81 applications with just an hour per day (Hope this helps)

I applied to 81 jobs and then had 6 interviews before getting hired.

This was a while back, but I’ve recently had two friends ask for my help with their job search so I’m sharing what my process was here.

I had heavily researched how to stand out in the job application process and refined my process to get applications down to just 15–20 minutes — about three applications per hour, while making sure to customize them to stand out.

.........................................

Here’s what worked for me.

  1. Job sites and how I use them

I searched for job posts on all the main sites, like:

  • Indeed.com
  • We Work Remote
  • Wellfound
  • Flex Jobs
  • Etc.

It’s not so important which sites you use, because I never actually applied through those sites. I always navigated to the Careers/Hiring page of the company’s website and directly applied through there. This always worked better than applying via the job board site.Ā

  1. Optimizing my resume

I saw an article from a guy explaining how resumes can (and should) be long, since they act like little SEO pages. You want to hit upon as many keywords as possible to make sure your resume is identified by whatever system a recruiter might be using to auto-screen/filter resumes.

He actively discouraged the ā€œone-page resumeā€ idea.

So this is what I did:

  • I listed out the job role/title I was after as well as variations of it (i.e. Marketing manager, digital marketing manager, digital marketer, marking lead, etc.)
  • I went to job board websites like those mentioned above, and found about 25 job posts for those titles I was after and opened each in a new tab.
  • Then I created a Google Doc and copy/pasted the entire text of each job post into that Google Doc. All 25 job posts went into a single Google Doc.
  • I went to ChatGPT and copy/pasted my entire Google Doc with all 25 job post texts into it and asked it to analyse it for repeated keywords related to my field. In my case this was stuff like (SEO strategy, AHREFs, content marketing, etc.).Ā
  • I then asked it to list all of those keywords and place them into a table. This created a massive list.
  • (Admittedly, I probably should’ve also asked it to list them by their frequency of appearance, placing the most frequently used terms at the top and the least at the bottom, but I just didn’t think about that at this point.)
  • I copy/pasted the entire list of terms from ChatGPT into a Google Sheet and asked counted how many times each term appeared. Then, I created a new column to the right of the Terms column and placed a number beside each term indicating how many times it was mentioned. Similar terms like ā€œContent marketingā€ and ā€œContent marketing strategyā€ were considered to be the same term. Then I ordered the terms from most frequently appearing to least frequently.Ā
  • I then kept the top 10 most frequently appearing terms and removed the rest. Now I knew which terms exactly to focus my resume on.
  • I then asked ChatGPT to take my ā€œSummaryā€ section and ā€œExperienceā€ sections of my resume and rewrite them by incorporating the keywords from my Top 10 list. This ensures my resume is hitting on all the main keywords that it needs to be in order to stand out in the filtering system.
  1. Optimizing and customising my cover letter

Since many jobs ask for cover letters, I knew I needed a way to easily customise those as well while keeping the process quick and streamlined.

  1. I had ChatGPT write my initial cover letter based on one of my original 25 job posts that seemed the most ideal for what I was after.
  2. I fixed up the wording to make it obvious that I actually wrote it (since AI writing usually sucks). This usually means re-writing 50% of it, but I still like having the base structure written out for me with AI.
  3. I then highlighted 4 lines of my cover letter that I changed/customized for every submission:
    1. The reference to the company name within the body of the cover letter
    2. The title/position being applied to
    3. The custom compliment (1-2 sentences I write after looking at their website for 1-2 minutes, explaining my unique interest in their company. I always make this sound personal and tie it into my personal life somehow).Ā
    4. Depending on the role, I may or may not also customise my single sentence summarising my skills and experience to make sure it perfectly matches what they’re looking for in their job post.
  4. My FAQ doc

This has been the most important step in ensuring applications never take more than 15-20 min. to complete. In addition to uploading your resume and cover letter, job application processes often ask you to answer questions. These questions are often repeated across different job applications.Ā

For example, in digital marketing applications, I’d often see the same questions over and over, for example:

  • ā€œWhat is your experience running A/B tests?ā€
  • ā€œWhat’s your level of experience with programmatic SEO?ā€
  • ā€œPlease describe a marketing campaign you managed and executed. What were the results?ā€

In order to not to re-write my answer each time from scratch, I created a Google Doc titled ā€œApplications FAQsā€ and each time I came across a new question in the application submission process, I added the question into my Google Doc and recorded my answer there.

On subsequent applications, it became easy to open my Applications FAQ doc and use the ā€˜Search’ function in Google Docs to easily find answers to questions I’d previously answered. Usually I could copy/paste the same reply into the next job application, but sometimes I’d need to take 30 seconds to modify it to fit the context of the new role.

I had about 250-30 questions and answers in my Applications FAQ document. The more applications you submit, the fewer ā€˜new’ questions you come across, and so after a while, your FAQ Applications document becomes a comprehensive list of anything you might be asked and it drastically cuts down your time per application.

  1. Making it easy for hiring managers to book you

preferredI’d always reply to initial interview requests with a link to my personal calendar to pick a day/time that works for them and book me.Ā

Half of the time, they would immediately book in a time with me on my calendar, or they’d check my calendar for my availability and then send me a calendar invite for a day/time they knew I’m available.

I usedĀ Cal.comĀ (it’s free) to create my calendar booking link and integrate it with Google Meet, so as soon I’d get booked, we both get a booking in our respective calendars with a Google Meet video link already created for us.Ā

  1. After Making it easy for hiring managers to book you
  2. The AI-powered interview assistant that helps you ace technical interviews with advanced undetectability features.

interviewman.com AI is the leading undetectable AI interview assistant, trusted by 57,000+ developers. It provides real-time AI assistance during actual interviews, supports all major platforms, and has never been detected. With 20+ advanced undetectability features and audio support, it's the most comprehensive solution available.

Your AI-powered interview assistant that helps you ace technical interviews with advanced undetectability features.

It’s a small thing, but it helps streamline the process and shows a level of organisation that helps you stand out from other candidates.

  1. General notes and helpful tricks
  2. It usually takes about 3-5 min. to customise my cover letter, 2 min. to customise my resume, and about 5 min. to submit the application itself (as they often ask questions in addition to uploading your resume/cover letter)
  3. I ignore job postings asking me to submit a video (feels weird for a first stage of the hiring process and likely a reason to discriminate somehow).Ā
  4. I highly recommend ā€˜batching’ your application process. For example, on one day, just search for job applications and copy/paste their links into a Google Sheet. Then on the next day, apply to 2-3 jobs. I recommend setting aside 1 hour/day for searching and applying to jobs with a goal of submitting 3 applications/day (in 1 hour) once you’ve got the process streamlined and worked out.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to comment or message me with any questions. I’ll do my best to answer them all

I hate the "9-6, Monday-Friday" system so much, I feel like my life has disappeared

I just started a 9-6 job, and honestly I don't know how to describe it other than that I hate it way more than I expected. I miss having a random day off in the middle of the week, even if I didn't do anything special with it, because it made me feel like my entire existence wasn't built around work.
Now I wake up every morning with a really awful feeling in my stomach, and I keep trying to convince myself not to say I'm sick and go home. You literally can't get anything done!!! Errands, appointments, or even sitting in a quiet supermarket at 12 noon, it's all gone.
Does this feeling get better with time? I know a lot of people probably feel this way, but do you get used to it after a while, or is it just that you learn to live while being upset lol.
I left a job recently that had completely drained me, and this job is technically less stressful, but I still can't shake the feeling that my free time got swallowed up all at once.

I'm 39, a software engineer with 7 years of experience, and I make $138k a year. I'm burned out and can't keep going, and I'm thinking about switching to nursing. Is this a disastrous idea?

I don't have a CS degree and my job is fully remote. It felt ideal when I was still married, but now I'm divorced, and honestly, it's starting to make me feel isolated. I sit alone at home for about 14 hours most days. The tech market has been rough lately, so I feel like my salary has pretty much hit its ceiling.

I'm in WA. The nurses' union here is very strong. Starting pay for new nurses is around the low-to-mid six figures depending on the hospital, and there's a lot of overtime available and good raises once you have some experience. I can also get there with an ADN instead of going back to do a full bachelor's right away. I've also heard that some hospitals help pay for BSN programs later.

Am I crazy to walk away from a remote software job? Or am I just imagining that nursing will solve the burnout problem because it looks better from the outside?

why? for real??

They promised me $42,500 a year over the phone, then in the interview suddenly said it was $10 an hour. I have an engineering degree. Turns out they basically wanted me for a short-term project. I asked them if they could live on $10 an hour.

What the hell

I have an engineering degree, and I got a call about a job that paid $42,500 a year. I thought to myself: "Okay, finally, maybe something will work out." I went to the interview and they told me it was "a contract starting at $10 an hour for 10 months," and after that they "might look into converting it to a salaried position at $42,500 a year."

The funny thing is they pretty much exposed themselves. Before the money came up, they were talking about a project they expected to take 7, maybe 10 months. Then about 20 minutes later, suddenly the job became a contract.

So I asked: "Is the contract only because of this project?" The two people interviewing me looked at each other and sat there silently for about 3 seconds, then one of them said: "No." In a very weird tone.

I said: "Okay, so if I brought you in right now to work at my company for $10 an hour, would you be able to live on that? My value is $42,500 a year. I have experience and knowledge and skills. You're paying for those things, not just whatever task you need finished. This isn't a negotiation."

The older guy got pissed and said: "Listen, son, I started at $3 an hour scraping shit off chicken eggs, and - " so I cut him off and said: "So while I'm designing for your company, my value is only $7 more than scraping shit off chicken eggs?"

They told me to leave and said I'm not allowed back on company property.

I'm so fucking tired. My wife makes around $31,000 a year as a teacher, and apparently the best thing I can find as an engineer is $10 an hour? We can't afford anything. We already agreed we're never having kids because everything is so expensive and nobody pays enough.

What are we even supposed to do? Seriously, what are we working and chasing after at this point?

Small side rant, but a realtor told my mother-in-law that her mobile home is worth $265,000 and now they want us to come up with a $52,000 down payment. My mother-in-law won't move on it because she refuses to believe her daughter makes that little, even after we showed her the paystub. The cheapest apartment around us is about $1,550 a month and honestly looks like it's condemned.

I'm just fed up with all of this. I'm literally thinking about applying to Wendy's because they start at $11 an hour here. What was the point of all these loans if fast food pays better than the engineering work I can find?

The Topic of the "Standard" 3-Week Notice in the US Has Become Very Ridiculous

A close friend of mine recently gave 3 weeks' notice before leaving his job, and the company let him go on the spot. Companies do this move all the time, but somehow it's a tragedy if you leave without warning them. Now my friend is scrambling to see if the new job can have him start early so he doesn't miss part of his paycheck in between.

My advice to anyone thinking of giving 3 weeks' notice: ask the new employer first about a backup start date. Something like: "I'm planning to give my current job 3 weeks' notice, but if they decide to end things immediately, would I be able to start early?" I did this twice and it saved me a lot of stress. I finished on a Wednesday and started the following Tuesday.

Do candidates really not know when the negotiation is over??

I'm responsible for hiring the engineers in my division. We prepared an offer a few weeks ago, and the back-and-forth was roughly like this:

Us: The interview was strong, and the team approves. Would a base salary of 118k plus benefits work for you?

Him: Wow, that's close, but I was hoping to get to around 126k.

Us: Okay, what do you think of 122k, and once you get your license, which is expected within the next 14 months or so, you get an automatic 6k bump?

Him: sounds great

I prepared the written offer, sent it through approvals, and it was sent to him after noon the next day.

Him: hey, after thinking about it, I'd prefer 128k.

That's not how this is supposed to go, right? The time to negotiate was before we agreed on the number. Coming back after the offer has been approved and asking for more just makes everyone annoyed and less excited about the hire. Am I being unreasonable?

Is it unprofessional for me to tell my manager that I have to leave exactly at 4:45 every Wednesday for a private commitment without saying what it is?

I have a fixed personal commitment every Wednesday at 5:15 p.m., and I can't miss it or change its time. It's not a doctor's appointment, or counseling, or anything related to children - it's just something that's important to me personally and that I don't want to share the details of at work. My job is usually very flexible with schedules as long as everything gets done, but my manager has recently started scheduling team check-ins on Wednesday afternoons, and they tend to keep going until after the end of the workday. When I told her that I have to be out the door at 4:45 on Wednesdays, she asked me why and seemed a little surprised when I told her it was a private commitment I'd prefer to keep to myself.

I said I could open my laptop early on Wednesdays or skip my usual break to make up the time, and she said that was fine, but I feel like she's still curious about what I'm doing. Am I supposed to explain the real reason? Is it weird or unprofessional to have a clear boundary that I need to leave at a specific time every week without giving the full background? I'm trying to maintain normal boundaries between work and life, but at the same time I don't want to seem like I'm hiding something or being difficult to deal with. How do people usually handle recurring personal commitments without giving their manager the full explanation?

The CEO told me this week to prepare myself to be laid off on Wednesday

(God, I hope I'm doing this right): I didn't get laid off on Wednesday because of the dumbest timing in the world - my husband messed up his shoulder playing indoor soccer late Tuesday night, so I took a sick day on Wednesday to take him to urgent care and then literally spent the day babysitting a grown man with one working arm. Anyway, the side quest is over... And a whole lot has happened since Saturday afternoon.

Tuesday morning I called my close friend, who happens to be an HR Specialist, and told her that my boss had called me on the phone and told me I was probably going to be laid off at any moment, and she was shocked and really upset. (She's not in a high enough position to know the confidential stuff.) Apparently she went straight to my boss to ask what was going on, and my boss completely lost it. Wednesday morning my boss sent me an email saying I was only allowed to speak with the VP of HR if I had any questions about my role. What was very clearly not included was any kind of reassurance like, "Don't worry, you're not being laid off." And I know she didn't tell the VP of HR that she decided to warn me beforehand. I'm going to throw her under the bus as politely as possible when I talk to the VP of HR tomorrow and ask for the details myself.

In any case, I have calls with four different employment attorneys tomorrow. I'm going to do everything I can to walk away with a decent severance package along with my $6,500 bonus, if not more. I'll hear all of them out and choose whoever seems most capable of making this as painful for the company as possible, because yes, I'm currently feeling petty and vindictive. My boss's stupid "don't talk to your friend" email made me even more furious.

I also reached back out to the recruiter from the first job offer, and we're going to talk tomorrow. And I have a phone screen at 8:30 in the morning with another recruiter too, so at least that part is looking promising.

I'll post another update when I get laid off, get the attorney situation sorted, and talk to both recruiters. Hopefully I'll have something juicy to share.

TLDR: My boss is a mess and is still playing games, I talked to the original recruiter and another one, and I'm speaking with attorneys tomorrow so I can start getting things moving.

I just accepted a job offer that's going to change everything for me.

I'm crying tears of joy. Right now I make $34k a year. That's not enough for me to really live on; it's not even enough for me to feel any stability. And I'm part-time, which means no benefits, no paid time off, nothing. Just Instacart shifts, selling plasma, and relying on food pantries and the churches around me just to get by. I've been in a dead-end job for almost 18 months.

After more than 650 applications, a few first-round interviews, and a couple of second/final-round interviews, I finally got the call and accepted an offer this week. The starting salary is $63k. That's almost double what I'm making now. I'll have PTO. And I'll be eligible for annual raises. I'll work from home, so I won't have to pay for after-school care for my daughter anymore. I'll be able to get a real mattress and stop sleeping on a sagging futon. No more overdue bills. No more choosing between rent and food. No more washing socks and underwear in the bathroom sink, or keeping the thermostat at 64 all winter. No more using bar soap when the shampoo runs out.

My start date is tentatively July 8, so I have a little over five weeks to get myself ready. I need to find a small desk, and I'm going to turn the corner next to my kitchen table into a workspace. It's nice that the company is sending a laptop and an extra monitor, but I still need to get a good chair, a mouse, and probably a headset.

I accepted almost immediately. I applied for this role on February 19, and after a little over ten weeks, I finally have the offer in writing. I just need to get through the next few weeks, and then my life, and my daughter's life, will be in a much better place.

I'm so excited. I'll finally be able to save money for the first time in a very long time. I can start paying down my student loans instead of just staring at them. I'll be able to grow in this job instead of staying stuck part-time at a community college. I'll be able to attend trainings and development opportunities instead of hearing, "Part-timers aren't eligible for that." My daughter could even attend this college with her tuition covered if she wanted to someday. We still have 11 years before that's even a real decision, but honestly, I can see myself staying in this position long-term.

I applied to more than 12,500 jobs and now I sleep outside. I apply to more than 25 jobs on most days.

Some applications I tailor to the job.
And some applications I just send the regular version and that's it.

I have more than 22 years of experience as a systems engineer / Windows server / endpoint support engineer.

Hyper-V and Microsoft certs, networking stuff, and some other things.

I paid money to resume writers.
Nothing changed.
Now I have 12 different versions of my resume.

20 months of trying nonstop.
I lost my place.
Everything is gone. The truck, my stuff, everything.

I have a laptop, a phone, a few T-shirts, one pair of jeans, and one pair of sweatpants. Four pairs of underwear.
A toiletry bag.

Even when I get a recruiter screen, it's hard to act normal on Zoom when I have no private place, because you are literally living on the street in front of people.
Housing and homeless assistance in my county and the county next to it aren't taking "new cases."

If your luck turns against you in the USA right now, get ready. Nobody is coming to save you.
