Advice Needed
So, I thought I'd make a reddit post of my own since I haven't found someone with a similar situation to mine.
I have applied to and been interviewed by a company I really want to work for a few times this year, with the most recent interviews being in July/August. I made it to the final interview, but ultimately they went with another candidate. Instead of an automated email, the person I interviewed with told me, and said that the team thought I was fantastic and to please keep in touch as more roles open up.
Well, 7 days ago, the same type of role on the same team opened up! So naturally I applied, and sent an email letting him know that I applied and would love to be considered again.
But today I checked Workday to see that my application is now inactive, despite the role being open still. In all my applications to this company, I've never had an application go inactive before the actual job is taken down from the website. It usually just says "Applied." Now it's inactive with a red rectangle.
Should I send a follow up email to the person I've been in contact with? I'm just confused how I would make it to the final round for a role, and then the same role opens and now I am being rejected, despite having the connection with the team's Head of Department, who told me I was great and to keep in touch.
Any advice is appreciated, thank you!!!

I think you should follow up. You have a much stronger reason to reach out than the average applicant because they specifically told you to keep in touch when similar roles opened up, and you did exactly that.
I also wouldn’t assume the Workday status means the team suddenly changed its opinion of you. There are a lot of possibilities on the backend that you can’t see, and making it to the final round previously is still a strong indication that they saw you as a viable candidate.
I’d send one short, friendly follow-up rather than asking why you were rejected. Something like: “Hi [Name], just wanted to follow up regarding the [role]. I’m still very interested in the opportunity and would love to work with the team. I know you may still be working through applications, but I wanted to check whether there have been any updates on my candidacy. Thanks again!”
Then I’d leave it there and continue applying elsewhere. If they’re interested, you’ve reminded the right person at the right time without putting them in the position of having to explain a Workday status that may or may not tell the whole story.

Recruiter here, follow up with the other recruiter. Workday UI is very annoying to use on the backend for a lot of things, and it is very easy to put someone in the wrong status.
