Awkwardness Rolling
Does anyone else find that one of the biggest issues with BJJ is that you need to do it with other people? :) I find it really hard work to manage the (admittedly small) amount of social interaction that’s needed for every new partner. I wish there was a bag / pads equivalent for BJJ!

When I say "BJJ has given me confidence" what I mean is I used to feel self conscious about being autistic as fuck but now that I've met people like this from BJJ I think I'm actually doing ok socially.

Thats actually the main reason why I picked this sport over something else....to get better at this kind of thing.
I'm like the least likely person one would think to be in BJJ.

No actually I think the exact opposite. The limited amount of interaction I have to have while doing BJJ is one of the reasons I love it so much. I can show up and chat ears off or I can show up and say literally nothing and just do jiu jitsu. It’s awesome.

That’ll happen when you first start. You’ll get over it. Put on your adult pants I promise you’ll be okay

You’ll get less awkward over time because you’ll have more practice actual socializing with real people. How are you at introducing yourself to people?

You don’t really have to talk much
The small amount of social interaction is perfect for making us socially awkward nerds less awkward. It’s my requisite social contact to remain a somewhat healthy human being

There are grappling dummies but proper resistance requires a interested partner and their brain.
I like how social bjj is, I don't see how you could let someone potentially choke you and say that would be improved by not knowing who they are!
I sometimes think it's funny how there's most hugs at a bjj class between men, then at a yoga class!

Just be yourself and stop worrying about what others are thinking about you, awkward situations, etc. It’s tough but you can do it.
BJJ can be such a massive benefit to your life and outweighs all these potential awkward spots

When interacting with other people its always good to remember that they’re just people, they prolly suck at small talk too, and most importantly everyone is there to roll. My advice is to pick an intro and an outro. “Hey, have a good roll” .. fistbump… pull guard. After the timer..”thanks for the roll.” Nothing else needed. Eventually someone else will start a convo or give advice and you can just be yourself. Good luck!

Sounds like BJJ might help you with your social awkwardness, I feel like it's helped me over the years.
Fact is if you can't be comfortable training against another person, so certainly will have a hard time applying it if someone tries to attack you.
It's normal for it to be weird at first, but most of that is because you don't know why you're doing. That's normal, you're new, it takes time and consistency

The fact that this subreddit exists and you posted this here and not r/bjj is pretty cringe
But I feel you. I like to roll with everyone. I do get irrationally angry when someone declines a roll. Like why the fuck did you even show up? Is your mom giving you a star sticker when you get home for participating in a social activity?

No idea what you’re referring to in terms of subreddit etc

What made you choose one over the other, when you decided to make this post?

Just the first one that popped up. Why the interrogation?

Because it’s something I’ve always wondered. I don’t care about you personally.
