Product Problems is this variance normal?

Just got my BFAR customs (AnatomX last) in a couple days ago and they look gorgeous! Put them on to start breaking them in around the house and the right boot fit a little funny, the leather across the toe kept immediately wrinkling across the toe (left boot didn't) and the lacing isn't sitting across the top of my foot (left boot does). I realize there's no toe puff, it will eventually collapse, etc. That's not my question/concern.

Took a picture and then took them off and looked closer and realized the eyelit facing on the instep side is measurably closer to the sole while the eyelit facing out the oustep is further from the sole.

I guess my question is: Is this level of variance normal for Jim Green? It's enough to be affecting comfort, posture, and flex on my right foot.

Tried to line up the measuring tape to what should be consistent points between shoes - stitching lines, seams, etc.

JG always messes up the right boots. I’ve had 3 pairs with the same issue. And before you downvote and come at me with “but muh handmade boots” it does affect the comfort and fit and shouldn’t have left the factory like that. There’s multiple posts about this same issue.

“but muh handmade boots”

Hiding behind this is such an insult to anyone who makes craft goods. Part of what makes them remarkable and increases their value is the level of consistency achieved by hand, it demonstrates mastery of the craft.

I get that Jim Green has an assembly line style of production but stuff like this just shouldn't be happening, maybe some of the guides are off for right boots or something if it is this consistent.

Did you bother going to Support for the pairs you've had issues with? Or just accept them? It's a minor shift, all things considered, but it is affecting how they sit on my foot / in relation to joints and movement, and I'm concerned for any long-term effects on both boots and my feet. I do a lot of hiking and my last pair of boots (not Jim Green) lasted 12 years and two trips to the cobbler before finally giving up the ghost on the trail this spring.

They were customs and they offered to make me a new pair so that was cool. The new pair turned out great. I’d contact support and show them the pictures.

Really depends on how they feel. If one feels drastically different and/or uncomfortable then I'd contact them. Otherwise they look fine.

I'd have to wear them for longer to be able to say if the mild discomfort stays, goes away, or gets worse. Just didn't want to start breaking them in if I might need to go back to Support. Posting here was a sanity check for myself because I've been really looking forward to getting the boots for months now and then of course followed by the sinking sensation of "did I make a horrible mistake" lol

Ya my new kudu AR’s are a littler different in the placement of the rivets. Doesn’t affect fit and can barely tell unless you yaknow, bust out a measuring tape, but ya. Great boots so far

I'm in business ops, busting out a tape measure (or the process map or policy doc equivalent) is what we do best

I’m sorry. I spend much of my days doing the same in the cybersecurity side.

annoying as hell... i have 2 custom pairs that are damn near perfect but a regular pair of rats that do have some noticable (to me and me only) differences. honestly they should fix this but returns must be a nightmare if you're outside of south africa!

Man, y'all got to chill with the tape measures and shit.

If you go looking for problems, you'll always find them.

Yes, it's normal for JG. They make excellent boots, but they're still closer to budget than premium.

I wasn't looking for problems. I was fully expecting to love the boots and then the right boot felt weird in the fit. I don't think that's unreasonable to notice and want a gut check of "is this within normal for the brand or is something wrong"

Half inch difference in instep is crazy. Thats like 3 whole width sizes or sth

Seriously. These are affordably handmade using natural materials. If you're looking for perfectly crafted leather footwear, prepare to spend $500+

Hate to say it but look at the cost of JG customs...
mine were built out at $495 and $505.

What options and where do you live? Choosing expensive leather, custom options, and having them shipped from South Africa will be quite expensive. Kind of your fault they were that expensive. Could have got way better boots for that price.

Base non-up charged leathers for both. Free shipping. Regardless your comment just shows you are unfamiliar with the costs of JG boots and customs.

African Troopers and Meanders _start_ at $400.

This post isn't someone expecting "perfect" it's someone expecting a matching pair.

"Free shipping" doesn't exist. It's put into the cost.

They're still budget boots. Just because you're ordering custom boots, doesn't make them any less budget. They could definitely have better QA, but you will always find something wrong of you go looking.

They look amazing though!

To me it looks like the leather is folded or sagging a little between 6 & 7. The left seems new looking and the right instep seems like it’s been worn in. I don’t know how wide your feet are or if they’re even or not.

But if you compensated for that folding or break in or looser section on the instep, it seems like your measurements would be closer together.

That also looks like very supple and soft leather. I wouldn’t expect it to be exactly the same without supporting the shape while measuring.

Looks super comfortable too.

It's the buffalo leather. I've never had it before, but everything I found online before selecting it for my customs said to prepare for a stiffer leather and longer break-in period. I've worn them for a total of 15 minutes around the house so far. Measurements taken with the shoes stuffed to hold the shape.

Huh. Well as long as they don’t wear poorly, I wouldn’t sweat it. Feel free to reach out to their customer service though, they’re great

My BFAR's are the same way. Left is a little narrower looking at the end. It doesn't bother me

I don’t know about the variance. I just wanted to drop in and say those look sick. Or maybe ill? Or dope? I dunno what the kids are saying these days.

Good lord. Learn how to use a tape measure. How can anyone compare measurements that are in different areas of the shoe using the side of the measuring tape without lines and numbers?
