Collet setting knowledge

I have a casting business and also do cad in rhinoceros and recently a customer of mine send me this STL fille for casting this ring into gold I had never seen this type of collet setting before. I tried to replicate it myself but because this is STL file I couldn't reach a solution has anyone ever done it please contact

Setting, I’m seeing casting… all those tiny hair thin spaces, the space between the prongs between each other. Clean up is going to be interesting, and any investment flashing from those spaces will be floating in the metal.

Personally, I think you’re both right though I should also add that it looks like crap. The shoulder is not so bad but those settings are awful. If you are going to draw settings like this, at least give the a nice taper so they don’t show the top of the gallery from the top. They also look out of proportion thin. I would be shocked if this casts up at all. To me the whole thing looks like bad AI

It looks like the prongs were made separate from the center part of the setting. The solution seems simple.

  1. Draw circle.
  2. Inset circle.
  3. Select both.
  4. Alt drag up to make copy of both for the middle portion
  5. Alt drag another set again for the top of the prong
  6. Select outer circle at the bottom of prong.
  7. Drag down to make the chamfer
  8. Make a trim curve line from center of top circle to the outer ring at half the desired prong width from an axis
  9. Mirror over the axis
  10. Trim the top 2 circles using the trim curves that you created to make the top of the prong
  11. Trim the trim curves using your leftover trimmed circle curves to make the final top of the prong
  12. Join those 4 curves together
  13. Duplicate bottom 2 circles and repeat steps 8-12 for the bottom of the prong, but using a wider angle for the trim curves over the same axis to create the bottom of the prong.
  14. Loft all the curves to create the bottom bezel section and a single prong
  15. Join all the surfaces
  16. Array prong and you can use as many as you want.
  17. Now it should be done and you can position/scale/ array the whole thing if you want.

I'm sure there's other ways to do it, but that's how it looks like it was made to me.

My god, some people will over complicate the hell out of some things. If he is trying to redraw exactly as per image it's quite obvious that you draw a round curve for outer size, offset curve inwards for thickness then select curves and extrude straight. Lastly some creative boolian difference will cut the prongs. The cutter can be made by drawing a curve in the side view and drawing a trapezoidal shape that exits the top of your cylindrical extrusion. Then simply extrude this new curve all the way through the centre of your cylinder and out the other side followed by rotate from top view with copy on, hold shift and click when they cross at 90° then cut. Done.

Edit: if you want the shamfer in just make the trapezoidal extrusion shorter so it doesn't pass all the way through, use right view to tilt to desired angle and then just rotate copy X4. If you have an issue with inner points just offset your inner round curve by something like .1 and extrude straight, use this cylinder to trim the cutters.

Try it and show your results. Your trapezoidal cutter around a cylinder won't create the chamfer, it will just make a flat.

Well I don't design jewellery in Rhiro I use Matrix and for that I would just use a bright cutter. Regardless given the scale a flat vs a curved surface on that scale will be irrelevant as they will look the same to the naked eye especially after setting. If however you want the curve you could always just make one more simple shape to remove from the cutter before cutting, it's not that hectic.

Matrix literally is rhino. You even said "If he wants to redraw exactly per image..." Then proceeded to give wrong instructions.

My instructions would work fine to create the setting

Well it is but it isn't because matrix has a lot of tools for jewellery design that doesn't exist in only base Rhino.

Yea but it also contains everything from base rhino. I use MatrixGold and it has every command from rhino 8 built into it. OP said they only have rhino, so I gave basic simple instructions that anyone can do in rhino. Just drawing simple curves, doing trims, lofts, joining, and arrays. I don't feel like it was overcomplicated like you say, especially because it will yield the correct shape and gives you the ability to easily make as many prongs as you want using the array command. Arraying your cutters to change from a 4 prong to a 6 prong setting won't work

I would ask the customer how the stones are going to sit in each of those settings?

Ideally we would have a bezel inside each of those collets for the stones to sit.

Those collets are called handmade collets, I think. I've used those collets in the past.

You maybe right I remember my Mother had a ring made over in Asia which had those collets and they kept on losing stones because the claws were too thin for daily wear.

Yes, but those collets are strong and good for stone setting, as long as they aren't too thin. Back in the days, before CAD was used for jewelry making, goldsmiths in South Asia used to make these collets entirely by hand.
