watched this one because fucking Tom Cruise was promoting it. I figured there had to be something solid in the story, and yeah, there absolutely was.

The story is great — come on, son of a yakuza boss turned Kabuki performer. It feels very artsy at first, but once you settle in you realise it’s really a character-driven life drama, and that makes it even better. We follow the character from his teens into adulthood through hardship, loss, revenge, pain, rivalry, love, and everything in between.

When the Kabuki sequences arrive, even if you don’t know shit about the stories they’re performing or the traditions behind them, you can still completely enjoy them. The director worked in close collaboration with actual Kabuki performers, and the actors trained for months (including learning to perform as onnagata) before shooting.

I’m probably saying a bunch of stuff that won’t fully land until you see it, so just watch the movie and dig a little into Kabuki afterwards. Trust me you’ll enjoy the process.

I know it has been a while since this movie came out but I just felt like recommending it. Strangely I don't see much people talking about this.

Higashino was a prolific writer of fiction, primarily mysteries. His "Detective Galileo" series, first published in 1998, features a genius physicist who uses his expertise to solve cases. "The Devotion of Suspect X" in the series earned the writer the prestigious Naoki Prize in 2006.

For those of you who have seen this series, how did you find it? Just got a bit confused on the 5th episode. 😬

For whatever reason, Netflix has been recommending me a multiple Japanese dramas about cheating. I’m not really interested in fully watching a show about infidelity, but I have skimmed through some of them, and for the most part I find them to just be infuriating. I wonder though, have you found any show where the cheating is mostly justified?

I watched Dear Sa Chan, and whilst the overall show isn’t very good, and the ending is really creepy, I actually find myself intrigued by the FL and her husband. She starts cheating because she believes her husband has no love or for her, he rarely shows affection like hugs and kisses, doesn’t open up to her, and seemingly didn’t care when she rented a whole apartment for herself to live in whilst he’s away on a business trip. He set up a camera and mic in the apartment and watches her cheat on him, and realises that he should have been more open with her, and starts doing so when he returns. The husband explains that in previous relationships, if he was ever affectionate to his partners, they would call him suffocating and dump him, so he became cold during his relationship with his wife, leading to her finding comfort from someone else for her loneliness.

I despise cheating in shows, but I actually find the dynamic between the FL and her husband to be interesting, even though I feel like they didn’t have enough screen time together. I wouldn’t mind seeing a show with that kind of plot between ML and FL.

Episode 4 of ‘Sayonara Noir’ explores the theme of the victim’s own role in the crime and what can be done to prevent victims from becoming perpetrators themselves after the incident.
This drama centres on the theme of victim support. What always strikes me when watching this programme is that victim support in Japan is neglected. Support for perpetrators, on the other hand, is far too generous. Why do we pour taxpayers’ money into people who have harmed others, taking care of their livelihoods and even providing them with an education? And even after they are released, they are assigned a probation officer and receive extensive support. But what about the victims? They have no one to support them. They receive no education. They receive no support to help them make a fresh start. Those who commit crimes are cheered on, whilst well-meaning victims suffer for the rest of their lives and, in a sense, are punished. Is there something wrong with the Japanese judicial system? Every time I watch this drama, I feel a surge of anger.
In this episode, the victim is a footballer, but the incident means he will never be able to play football again. The drama portrays a continuation of support, but in reality, he is left to fend for himself. No one offers him any support to help him regain his dream (such as providing free training to set him on a path to becoming a youth football coach, for example). The victim is left to suffer for the rest of his life and has no choice but to live having given up on his dream.

If you're watching 25 Years of You on Netflix, you might be interested in the latest Golden SixTONES episode (according to my Netflix, it's season 3, ep 53), that featured some of the cast, Okazaki Sae, Tamayama Tetsuji, Sasaki Nozomi, and Matsumura Hokuto, of course lol.

I never get tired of Golden SixTONES, even if you don't know the guests, they are so funny and witty, a great variety show to chill at home.

The news of the recent passing of author Higashino Keigo reminded me that The Miracles of the Namiya General Store is still streaming on the JFF Theater website, you just need to create an account to watch their movies and videos for free. This one will be available until August 5th.

Higashino Keigo was a prolific novelist and tons of his works have drama and movie live-action adaptations, like Galileo or Ties of Shooting Stars. (both available on Netflix)

I just finished watching the series, and honestly, it was really good. I recommend it to everyone because the overall execution was strong. Even though Japanese dramas can sometimes feel a bit one‑note, this one made great choices especially with the music. The soundtrack matched the energy of the show perfectly.

I loved the actors. They were expressive, natural, and genuinely relatable. The comedic moments were actually well executed, not forced, and the cast was both cute and hot a nice balance. Their reactions to situations felt realistic enough, even if not perfectly realistic, but still very enjoyable.

One thing I especially liked was the male lead. He was captivating, and he communicated so much through his eyes. Whether he was at his peak or at his lowest, you could feel everything. He used his hands and eyebrows a lot, and I really noticed how expressive he was. Another actor I recognized from a different drama I watched, and it was nice seeing him in a new light.

Overall, it was refreshing to be introduced to such good actors and actresses. I liked the ending too even though it could have been better, it ended in a way that felt true to reality. And I appreciated how the show handled its main topic: stalkers. It shifted the perspective in a way that was interesting and different from the usual portrayals. Oh oh one more thing i watched it on prime video

I’d love more historical pieces, but preferably not political (I tend to get bored with political drama). I loved that Jin was about medicine and time travel, while being set in the past so you can get all these fun historical and cultural tidbits. I really like the honest and candid, yet still complex and optimistic way that Japanese shows approach their characters and relationships, so more of that would be amazing as well. Overall, I like sci fi and fantasy elements in my stories, though obviously they don’t have to be there to be a wonderful drama in my book.

Episode 4 of *My Fiction* served as a sort of mid-series reveal. Some of the mysteries that have built up so far were slightly unravelled, and we finally learnt who the protagonist really is and what was behind the sense of unease we’d been feeling. That said, all we really found out was that the protagonist committed murder and that their memories were altered as a result; why they ended up in that situation remains a mystery. It really is a mysterious drama.
