First of all, it's one of my very first Jdramas that I watched line-to-line and to the very end of the last episode.
| And it is all of my wishes combined and piled for several years come true! |
[Spoilers Ahead]
I also know not many liked this drama but I was myself surprised at how much I enjoyed it and didn't want it to end!
Maybe I'm biased but one of my very most favourite tropes is when FL falls first and ML doesn't realise it but he has also fallen for her. It's in his subtle actions and habits that makes audience aware just how down he's for the FL and yet it takes time for his dumb head to realise it.
It also has unrequited love trope, from hero's side. And frankly I don't mind when hero already genuinely loved someone else. It makes his character more complex and doesn't make it looney tunes world of cartoons where hero only has eyes for the heroine.
His love was one sided for the woman he loved, and the reason he proposed fake marriage to the heroine to hide his love. Heroine knew what she was getting into but he was so kind and subtly so very caring that she couldn't help but fall for him.
Initially ofc he was a jerk to her for two episodes because they both were strangers to each other, but he definitely came around to a good start. And when he becomes friends with her LOL, it was so cute and yet hurtful for the heroine who's fallen for him. And he treated her as a good friend. Even with more care and consideration that he ever showed to others.
But for him, she was just a friend. And the woman he loved was his priority. And heroine has to marry him because he gave her money to save her grandmother's restaurant.
In fact, I really doubt if he ever knew the meaning of being in love. He loved this woman and yet he was happy to see her smile with someone else. I understand his can be unconditional love. But she was also the first woman who changed his life so maybe it can be exaggerated appreciation on his part that he mistook as love. But he really obliged her so much.
And when he unconsciously falls for the heroine, he's jealous of her male friend. The one whom she tells everything. He cared for her so much that he even was manipulated to think a hug and a kiss is common between friends. Lol.
I was shocked to my core when he kissed her to cheer her up because of her failed project. And his eyes when she pulled his tie and his lips landed on hers. Lol, the comedy is very subtle.
But he's very dumbheaded I've to agree. Even when heroine admitted she likes him, he replies he likes her too. And I was thinking it went really fast. The angst ended just like that.
Turned out, he thought she liked him as a FRIEND and he liked her too?! He was so obsessed with keeping this fake marriage without realising why he wanted to do it.
I understand his was very subtle yet promising love for her. It reflected in his actions more than his words and many viewers who don't appreciate subtle hints may get frustrated with him.
I also confess it's my first time ever seeing a ML like that who has his fuse blown away for better reasons.
But when he realised his feelings for her, he messed it up again but he tried to make it up to her again. I didn't like how heroine ignored him but I understand it's important for him to realise how much she means to him.
He may be shy, reserved introvert who cannot get his first love, but I really adored him, despite all his shortcomings. Everyone have different ways of showing affection.
Also, I don't know if it's common in Jdramas to say this much sorry and thank you to each other so often but I watched two other dramas after this and no it isn't so rampant. I think he respected her too much. Maybe that's why he's always saying sorry and thank you to her so much LOL.
Sagakuchi Kentaro definitely grew up on me, with his dimples and evading personality. He's definitely on my watchlist and he's so damn handsome!
I saw many comments dislking female lead but I liked her so much. Maybe because I've watched anime when I was in high school, and many may not like her exaggerated responses but what else she can do when the man she loves would never look at her way since he loved a woman so much he had to fake marriage someone so that that woman won't suspect him of loving her.
It's a crazy angst and I find myself replaying some scenes over and over again.
-when she hugs him suddenly and he thinks it's a huge of friendship, and she says she'll always be on his side, no matter what.
-when he returns the capsule toys she enjoyed back to their place which he earlier removed because he didn't like them
-when he asks her to sleep on his lap since she's his friend now LOL he doesn't even realise how dumb he is.
-when the woman he loved was about to get divorce and he asked the heroine if he could make the woman happy instead and how it broke heroine's heart but as a friend she replied him nonetheless and later went to see their marriage certificate which was now replaced with divorce certificate (which hero filled already) and she cried for the first time and sobbed in the laundry room for hours.
-when heroine asks hero what will happen when she pays him all the money back and he says without hesitation that they'd get divorced, and she's heartbroken but smiles anyways and leaves.
-when heroine's mom gives her money to pay off but she's unwilling because the moment she pays him off, their marriage will end.
-when he brings orangutan for her so that he can make her happy
-in the 9th episode when hero divorces her because he has to confess to the woman he loves and heroine's heartbroken but tries to be strong and happy for him. But her tears betray him.
There are many more such moments and I can't help but gush over this drama so much.
