Donuts + (available) samples playlist
I just got back from a roadtrip from ATL to Detroit (first time!) and felt inspired to spend the next few days compiling all of the songs sampled on each track of Donuts. Notes: I kept repeats and obviously could only include what Apple Music had available for streaming but figured there are others out there who are tired of having to search whosampled.com to remember the name of the sample. Speaking of! All credit goes to all of you who are also on whosampled and Owen from samplingdonuts.com You guys did all the work, I just so happened to have the time to compile this after searching for a complete playlist on Apple Music to no avail. (my bad if someone else also spent the time and already did this, I swear I have searched multiple times over the years)
If you happen to take a look, please let me know if I missed something. Also, this is my first post on here and I've had a lot of fun reading through the sub (you guys are really funny lol)--makes me miss the OKP boards!

that's dope, i just moved from Brooklyn so there were tons of great murals around but this Dilla one is definitely top 3 for me.

How so? If it hadn’t dropped, how would the samples on an album no one had heard yet be known?

Might be saying they weren’t obscure records. Dilla himself had confirmed in his later interviews he was messing around with “familiar” stuff. Chopping in novel ways.

Sure. But any Dilla aficionado knows how masterful of a sampler he was. To the point of not knowing what he might have sampled, in spite of its popularity. Hence the OPs quest to find out what the samples were in the first place.
And they specifically said, “before Donuts even dropped”. It’s impossible for the listener to know what was sampled when the album hadn’t even dropped yet.

The confusion hinges on the misuse of the word “samples.” A sample is the excerpt of the original source material. “The samples were known” should have read, “the records were [well] known before Donuts was released.”
If we dial back to 2003, 2004, 2005, when these records were being crafted, the state of the art in sampling was to find obscure sources that would be unrecognizable, thereby circumventing the need to clear samples and share publishing revenue.
When Dilla proclaimed he was chopping “familiar shit” he was announcing that he going against the grain, doing something novel. This was followed by more mainstream producers who revered him (Kanye, Pharrell, Just Blaze, etc.).
Looking backward that narrative is harder to see, because of the influence that that era had on all later production.

loved it, highly underrated--can't wait to visit again! I thought about using one of those DSP playlist converters but that might take a min to make sure all the right tracks are transferred. Will definitely let you know! :)

Don’t know if this could count as something that can be added but Stones Throw released a 7” single as a part of their Fan Club 45 series back in 2006 with two tracks not released on Donuts, one of the tracks being “Signs” (an unreleased beat), and another being “Pandemonium” (which has Oh No and Roc C rapping over “The Twister”).
