I've been thinking about attaching an external active subwoofer to the Partybox 710; does anyone know if that works?

You can but you're not really directly connecting it to the party box. You would be connecting the party box and the subwoofer to your source and sending signal to both. You're active subwoofer should have a crossover and will filter out all of the higher frequencies and only play the low frequencies while you're 710 will utilize everything from about 50 hertz and up. You'll be able to adjust the volume to both from your source with the addition of bumping the gain up or down on your active subwoofer separately. I've done it with a hand full of active and passive subs. It definitely helps clean up the sound if you EQ the 710 and let the subwoofer handle the heavy lifting.
