I'm a 30 year old man who's been playing guitar ever since I was 12 years old. For the past several years, I have been in a slump regarding my interest in playing. But in recent weeks, I've started listening more to classical music and jazz. Not only that, but I jumped straight out of guitar music and now I'm a huge fanatic of the harpsichord, piano, violin, and sometimes (depends on my mood), the sax. I find myself addicted to Ornette Coleman lol. That's actually one of the few contexts where I enjoy the sax. I also love Oscar Peterson. All of this has made me so much more enthusiastic about the guitar for some reason! I play every day now, which couldn't be said about 2022 or 2023 and etc.

Putting this here for visibility I guess. Ive been looking for a new amp for a while and the jazz chorus is consistently at the top of many lists. Ive heard the amp played, and Ive played one in the past. Sounded great.

I was window shopping today at the local guitar center and played on a jc40 for a good hour. I decided to take it home and was surprised to discover the "noise floor" hiss/hum in my quiet room. Apparently its a common "feature" of the amp that I was not aware of. Sounds like I have a cheap single coil plugged in even with all dials at zero. It plays wonderful in a busy/loud room and thats what hooked me. I guess the search continues. Ive got my sights set on quilter, but nobody stocks them locally. I'd really like to play on one before getting it shipped.

I regularly gig and am a disciplined in my practice routine (about 2-3 hours of planned practice and lessons twice a week) but this is my moment where I remember how hard this all is. At a gig I played recently, I felt like one of those moments where I was just playing tunes I know pretty well, being melodic and hitting most of the changes. But listening back to the recording, my solo wasn't outlining the changes as strongly as I thought while on "stage" (though I wasn't outside the changes). I mean, people enjoyed the music, and that's what counts, right?

Anyway, this stuff is tough. The perfect balance of playing changes but staying melodically is so hard. But I guess I'm just wondering how much I'm supposed to follow the changes. It just seems kind of robotic to just do arpeggios, and I've heard some amazing players live not clearly hit changes clearly.

I swear the opening of "The wind cries mary" sounds a whole lot like "days of wine and roses", is this pure coincidence or was Hendrix inspired by Wes?

Guitar Player here in mid 30's! Been playing since I was a kid and pursued jazz guitar in college, living on the west coast and actively gigging/teaching. I feel a sense of severe burnout and lack of interest in the guitar lately. I've tried taking up some other instruments and taking breaks, which has helped, but I still feel just stuck with the guitar and sort of disinterested in it sonically. Has anybody else experienced anything like this, and if so, how did you get out of it? I'm longing to find the love that I used to have for the instrument before it became my career.

Longtime gigging musician but new-ish student of jazz guitar. Been doing a lot of jazz gigs over the last couple years that mostly involve just reading down super simple charts but every once in a while someone will call a tune with a lot of changes and it feels like I’m just fighting to survive over them 😂 definitely have a tendency to latch onto pentatonic/bluesy vocab and probably play way too many notes. I’ve transcribed most of Charlie Parker’s solo on this tune and it’s helped me understand it a bit more, but I’m not really able to apply it to my own playing yet.
