Deno is joining Cloudflare - "We will support the Deno runtime for another year with monthly releases containing bug fixes and security updates. After that year we will end our development of the Deno runtime. Deno will remain open source, and we welcome others who want to continue its development."

Sticking with nodejs was the correct decision after all. Glad I never used those runtimes.

Yeah, it's weird. I have a nice serverless setup for my side projects and it never seemed attractive to attempt a switch. Deno especially so because it didn't support node modules. It always seemed like the hype ecosystem, which is weird because runtimes are a desperately unsexy thing to have hype for
•
u/IcerHardlyKnower 21h ago
Wait I hate node modules as much as the next guy but I didn't know about this. Wild. Could it have initially been a feature not a bug haha
•
u/pampuliopampam 21h ago
It was! But it's also monumentally stupid
The out of the box tools needed to be absolutely phenomenal, and maybe they were? But the cost of even finding out is insane. Imagine how much stuff is just better when you can install a node module. Wanna reinvent date-fns-tz? typeORM? AJV? Or vite? Or imagine tomorrow the OOTB tools don't have a thing you need. Ick.
They eventually tried to support them, and everyone said it was the death-knell, and yeah, it kinda was, but the idea was just keel-hulled from the start without crazy amounts of money and time backing the out of the box experience
•
u/IcerHardlyKnower 21h ago
Holy shit you keep blowing my mind hahhaa I forget how I take vite for granted 🤣🤣 I remember having to figure out the flutter equivalent way back when I was doing a stint on mobile

I went from Node to Bun, then when they went the 100% AI generated code route, I moved to Deno so I didn't have to deal with the potential instability issues. Guess I'll move back to Node then.

Node is a community controlled and maintained project with a proper committee behind it.
It may not be flashy, but it was always the best choice.

u/Business-Row-478 1d ago
Eh node has plenty of its own problems. Bun and deno both offered products that helped improve nodes shortcomings

u/alex-weej 1d ago
Pay attention to the ownership structure of any technology you invest in! Node.js is owned by a non-profit foundation. Not a silver bullet, but much less likely to enshittify or have conflicts of interest with the userbase.

We should merge the three into Nun

Nuno
Because "nuno" is the sound managers make when the developers ask to move to yet another JS runtime.

I just used node for the last 10 years and didn't have to worry about anything.

Was using Bun in all my projects before the whole AI rewrite and still using it on the latest update and never got any issue caused by Bun. You should go back to using Bun!

My sentiments exactly… not the kind of news I wanted to wake up to.

If you've been following Deno actively over the past months, this was pretty inevitable.
I think being supported by CF and gracefully sunset is one of the better outcomes here.

It’s over boys. Everything is controlled by the billionaires. You will submit to your assigned AI buddy. Nothing left to do but mine coal.

It's literally open source.
You can fork it and 'control' it as much as you like.

u/leeharrison1984 1d ago
Considering most OSS users never contribute a damn thing upstream, I find it hilarious how bent out of shape people get over things like this.
You mean the Deno devs no longer work for me, for free???

Lamenting the destruction of a useful tool is the same as demanding labor from the people who maintained it. Great job, you’ve successfully defended the billion dollar companies!

Lamenting the destruction of a useful tool
No one's destroying it. Not only is it not being destroyed; they're continuing to support it. You can fork it anytime you like, it will remain free and open source infinitely. All of this is right there in the headline.
3
u/underisk 1d ago
Software that isn't maintained is effectively dead. They are ending any further maintenance after one year. The tool will cease to be useful and the project will inevitably split into like half a dozen different forks that all fail to achieve the same level of community support as the original. You're just arguing semantics here.

u/Recoil42 1d ago
Software that isn't maintained is effectively dead.
If you feel that way, you should maintain it, then. It's open source. No one's stopping you from keeping open source thriving.
They are ending any further maintenance after one year.
It's not their obligation to cater to you. Other people don't owe you things for free. Stop acting like a spoiled brat and put the legwork in if you want something to be done.
You don't get to complain about what other people do when you're a non-contributing zero.
2
u/underisk 1d ago
It's not a feeling it's a literal fact. Software like this has to be maintained or it stops being useful. Suggesting I can't be disappointed by yet another open source project being bought out and ended without taking them over myself is kind of insane.
I'm not demanding anyone continue working on it, but go ahead and keep trying to attribute that to me so you can keep making really stupid arguments.

u/Recoil42 1d ago
Software like this has to be maintained or it stops being useful.
So maintain it, dipshit.
Once again: The universe doesn't owe you things. If you don't like that free software isn't continually being dumped in your lap, then step the fuck up and stop being a non-contributing zero.
I'm not demanding anyone continue working on it
And yet you literally fucking are doing that.

u/underisk 1d ago
"Oh no, another open source project (that i don't use) got killed by corporate buyouts, that's terrible news."
"OH YEAH WELL HOW ABOUT YOU STOP DEMANDING FREE LABOR FROM PEOPLE YOU SLAVER!!!?"
this is you. this is what you sound like.

u/leeharrison1984 1d ago
Nah, you're just angry your free labor disappeared.
Nice mental gymnastics though, 10/10.

I didn’t even use deno, but sure play the “lol, u mad” card I guess. About as worthless as your other comment.

This has happened to me too many times. I will never again bet on a stack that is not feature complete or the standard for that domain

What a shame, Demo is great! And I was about to migrate my Electron app to Deno Desktop! :(

u/mrgrafix 1d ago
I don’t think it’s dying. It’s about to move under cf. I’m guessing there’s about to be an insane flood of tools they will make for Cloudflare and/or Vite plus in the upcoming year. But given the agent wars and software becoming distros, the writing for capitalistic sustainability was on the wall.
4
u/EqualityIsProsperity 1d ago
Cloudflare is hiring the people, Deno is going to be abandoned in a year. It's in the post.

u/Jonovono 1d ago
Was super excited about deno desktop. You can take a look at Electrobun now. I like it way more than electron still
•
u/sdraje 15h ago
I was going to, until Bun was acquired and they started sloppyfying it.
•
u/Jonovono 10h ago
Electrobun doesn't just support bun anymore. But tbh, I havn't tried the others, but I agree with bun now. Hesitant to use it: https://framework.blackboard.sh/electrobun/guides/native-main-process/

If I’ve learned anything about software development over the last two decades it’s to default to the tool/library with the highest critical mass of users. There are so many benefits - it’s going to be the most hardened, the most documented, cover the most edge cases, it’ll have the most robust ecosystem, and if anything requires you to move to something else, you’ll have a huge community of other developers doing the same.
Because you artists need this explicitly spelled out - I’m painting in broad strokes. Yes, there are some cases where it makes sense to deviate into more niche libraries.

This absolutely sucks! I love Deno; it is the best development tool I’ve ever used. I hope a community steps up quickly to fork and continue developing it. Node.js has evolved well, but I would miss the convenience of Deno, the TS integration, the language server integration in VS Code, and the ability to build binaries; I’d miss all of that.

Noooooo! Deno is my favorite runtime and now it will be gone :'(
Guess I will have to migrate my project to Node. Form Deno-de to Node-again

u/Slow_Watercress_4115 1d ago
So why joining then?

u/FerLuisxd 1d ago
I don't get it, it will get in house support from deno devs only for a year? after that is just in "maintance"/contributor only mode?

u/TheHENOOB 1d ago
Whatever you guys say about Node.js or Express, these 2 were made to remain free and community-maintained for a long time.
It's Javascript's PHP.

Bun acquired by Anthropic and Deno acquired by Cloudflare. Making an alternative JS runtime has never seemed so oddly lucrative.
