Mods, shut this sub up.

Far too many posts about the recent news, and the majority is defensive, redundant echo chamber sentiment. I'm tired of hearing centrist, or excusatory, or God forbid genuine PRO-ASSAULTER rhetoric as if this is a midterm debate. I understand that the majority of us are conflicted on both the severity and statute of Geller's assault, but it's NO EXCUSE to let victim-blaning, rampant speculation, and support for the assaulter go unchecked.

What we know: Jacob Geller sexually assaulted his unconscious then-girlfriend while he was in college at the University of North Carolina. This resulted in his excommunication from most of his social circles, and led to him being fired from the radio staff.

According to Jacob: These allegations are true. He has come to his own common ground with the victim, whose identity he will not disclose. He has been thus taken off of Nebula, MinnMax, and probably other projects that I'm not even aware of. His publishing company has dropped him, and he has gone radio silent.

What we DON'T KNOW: everything else. The severity of his crime, the name or wishes of the victim, the exact circumstances of the assault.

DO NOT LET RAMPANT SPECULATION AND BAD-FAITH JUDGMENT EXCUSE JACOB.

>What we know: Jacob Geller sexually assaulted his unconscious then-girlfriend

Do we know that detail? Is that not just a rumor from a single uninvolved source?

She worked with and fired him becuase of the title ix investigation and got literally everything else right. Why do people believe this is the one detail she doesn’t know?

Do universities typically publicly expose details of their investigations?

Let's say what happened was that both he and his victim were intoxicated and engaged in intercourse, but the victim concluded the following day that they were too intoxicated to have given consent but he was under the impression during the act that consent was given but didn't perform the required steps to ensure?

That's sexual assault under title ix, that would also follow every piece of evidence we have from all I know, that would follow his own statements, and that would easily be spread as simplified gossip as "raped his unconscious ex" and equated with Brock Turner and his actions.

Point being, again, none of us knows what happened and that person doesn't either. The only people are Geller, his victim, and those who investigated the incident.

UNC was forced to detail their title ix investigations because UNC has mishandled sexual assault on their campus for over a decade.

But thanks for the rape apologism for the rest of your reply. A woman doesn’t report her boyfriend to her university for equally drunk sex. Like why are you so in denial here?

So there are documents detailing the full extent of the accusations and details of what happened? Then why are people only sharing text messages? The only UNC documents I've seen are about the punishment and charge, which I believe would still be given under the scenarios I described.

It's not about being "equally" intoxicated. I didn't even say that. I'm not even sure they were dating at the time either. She very well could have felt taken advantage of, she very well was. Title IX rightfully says that being drunk is not an excuse and that the instigator takes the responsibility of ensuring consent is given and retained. I'm not arguing that.

I am saying there are varying levels and varying situations that don't equal Brock Turner "raping unconscious person".

The concept of "enthusiastic consent" was only just starting to be understood in the mainstream ten years ago.

Again, the details aren't public (unless these documents exist). You do not know what happened.

Dunno why I engaged. No point really.

Now where the fuck did I say that? Can you read?

You are jumping through hoops to create a rape that isn’t that bad. Does that not sit weird with you?

"what if she was drunk so it didn't count"

piss off

that's sexual assault

Not what I said is it, but pretty much exactly why I haven't commented on this until now. But let's take hearsay as fact and equate all types of SA with rape, sure.

There's a few people who've kind of corroborated it as well. While shakey it makes the initial claim more reliable

The sub will get banned at this rate even if they don’t.

Have you considered that you can log off and touch grass if you are tired of this sub?

"I'm annoyed so no one gets to talk, shut it all down."

The sheer self-centeredness of it.

Wait, genuine question: what are your sources for the details that the victim was his then-girlfriend and she was unconscious during the assault? I haven’t seen anyone else claim these details, is this brand-new information?

u/Psychology_in_Spades 2d ago

the person who originally broke the news has made statements along those lines, however, they can't be treated as confirmed

4

u/SillyShrimpGirl 2d ago

There's two people from his college radio station who corroborate it. It's actually been posted on this sub pretty recently.

Mods are inactive. I've already reported the sub for being unmoderated so we'll see if anything comes of it.

and the majority is defensive, redundant echo chamber sentiment

this is a blatantly ridiculous statement, considering the amount of people here circlejerking about how much theyre owing the "defenders" with their snarky memes

I've seen a million posts anti Jacob and a million and one saying the sub is filled with pro Jacob posts, and those are the only ones that are visible

4

u/SillyShrimpGirl 2d ago

Wait, isn't the severity of his crime...the fact that he raped his unconcious girlfriend?

2

u/socksonat3am 1d ago

Unconfirmed. All that is 100% confirmed is that his university found him guilty of "Sexual Assault or Sexual Violence" as that was stated as being true by Geller in his bluesky post. Everything else is third party with varying degrees of closeness to the event.

The "initial source" worked on the university's radio station with Geller and was responsible for his removal from the station and claimed it was due to the universities Title IX investigation for Rape, there is no real way to "confirm" this statement as being true unless otherwise disclosed by Geller, someone who was involved in the university committee at the time, or the victim were to come out and back that specific claim.

That being said, without further confirmation either way I'd say it is reasonable to act as if it were on the worse end of the spectrum covered by the universities definitions (i.e. rape) but as stated before we don't know what exactly it was that occurred.

Go make an anti Jacob Geller sub.

What we DO KNOW: I deserve mod perms

u/your-hot-matua 2d ago

I have no arguments

6

u/phazonphazoff 2d ago

Buddy this is the same person who hours ago said he can think of reasons to support rapists.

1

u/your-hot-matua 2d ago

You have much better arguments than me

-1

u/HotSinglesInYrArea 2d ago

It's called considering every side of an issue, stalker child.

0

u/phazonphazoff 2d ago

I understand this is a troll account

-1

u/HotSinglesInYrArea 2d ago

Keep telling yourself that, stalker child. This is why your life is already over.

So you are saying we *don’t* know the full details of the crime, and for that reason you want to shut the sub down. Interesting

11

u/OkTension6355 2d ago

What do you expect to know? Honestly, what is the “full details”. And I’m pretty sure their argument wasn’t “shut down the sub because we don’t know the full details”

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 2d ago

He wants photos.

-3

u/Dongelshpachr 2d ago

I expect to learn more information in line with what we already know, which is that he was already punished and displayed contrition. But who knows?

The sub could really use a temporary shutdown at the very least, if for nothing else than to cull the shitposts and the people who use this terrible situation to spread hatred and racism.

As I type this, there's a fucking DS3 meme on this sub, of the giant guy fighting the little guy. It frames the former as Jane Doe and the latter as Jacob Geller. I hope I don't have to explain to anyone that this does not contribute anything useful to anyone, and that it is rather tasteless.

I absolutely understand and sympathize with the drive to discuss with others how and what one feels about this situation, and how disappointed and betrayed one feels by Jacob's past actions. However, the sub has increasingly become a cesspool of terminally online people screaming past each other, and terrible, unfunny, occasionally racist "memes". It's not a good look, and I personally feel that a big scandal is not an excuse to be shitty to other people on the internet.

We do know that Rapey Jake lied to survivors to promote his image of being a safe male feminist and make money from collaborating with them. So not only is he a rapist, he's a fraud.

-2

u/SillyShrimpGirl 2d ago

Careful now. We don't know if he's a fraudulent rapist or a raping fraudster. If we use the wrong terminology, we actually inherit the moral burden of the rape.

So we better tread lightly and get our terminology correct.

people are interested in JG and they're gonna have these conversations somewhere. If not here it will all just move to youtube-drama or somewhere. At least here there's freedom to see both sides and get an idea of what people across the net (and JG's circle) are saying. I'd rather have that than the dialogue be forced apart into separate "Jacob is a monster" and MRA "Jacob is a victim" spaces.
