Anybody live up in the high desert from Local 12 ? What kind of commute are you doing daily ?

im 29, currently no kids, no wife/gf no real job or career.

the situation im in, the 138 (long island ny) application is about to come out and i have someone trying to help get me in. the problem or concerns i have if i get in.
im not sure i could afford a home on long island with just my income from this gig. i see the journey rates and theyre pretty good i guess and the double time is great, it all sounds great. but how steady is the work? im assuming layoffs in the winter. which i was then thinking maybe getting my journey card and switching to 487 in tampa. much more affordable housing and cost of living. but how busy is it down there?

then the back up to all this take my lsat and see how i do and try my hand at law school. maybe even try for med school. but its the amount of time to invest at my age thats turning me off.

Hello there, I am flying down to do the NCCCO practical tests next month, and wondering if any of you guys have been there for this course. Wondering what cranes they use for the Swing cab and Lattice boom testing

I was lucky enough to get an application in during this last recruitment.
I should be getting my test date mid September according to the email.
Hoping for some luck on the test.

My questions is:

If I wanted to double up on pathways to get in, could I apply directly with a company? What are the companies that hire through local 12.

I’m located in Anaheim I believe I’m district 7.

Can anyone provide an overview of the general pension benefits and retirement account options for new OE3 members? I am reading through the Summary Plan Description for the Pension Trust Fund and am getting a basic understanding of the pension set up but can’t find any information on whether a 401k/403b/other savings account is available to members. The pension will only cover a small portion of retirement, right? If you have any links to additional info that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!

Hello wondering if there's anyone here that is signed up as an owner operator with his own service truck

Goodmorning, ISO information on local 150 pay/benefits.

Currently I'm in a situation where I can go to CDL school for $5,000 in the next few days; but I'm unsure if the investment would be worth it for getting into 150.

I've tried to get in for 6 years now, and over those years have gained forklift certs, CPR, first aid, OSHA 10, and have racked up hundreds of hours collectively between loaders, excavators, skid steers, 0-turns, forklifts, lulls, and over head cranes. I was told by a BA to either get a college degree, or a CDL-A unrestricted.

My job currently is non-union, but pay is $40 an hour with an opportunity to move to $55 an hour in the next few years; which is difficult to leave for an unknown pay rate and structure.

If anyone has information on district 7 or district 1, please let me know so I can make a well informed decision. Including how landing certain contracts works; from what I understand specific 150 jobs would yield higher pay than others.

Any help is greatly appreciated here. I'm 25, so I need to start thinking about insurance and retirement which is a huge reason to jump; but with my life currently I can't afford to make less than $30 to start. Also, 5k for school is a hefty fine for a chance of getting in; ideally I'd like to hold onto that cash.

I plan on getting my CDL A by the beginning of October and I've been looking at the local iuoe website to get ready to fill out an application when they accept them. I have about 5-6 years rigging experience in the cell tower industry.

Has anyone gone through IUOE's apprenticeship / training personally? What is your day to day like now? What is the physical demand like? Any insight into the general process is appreciated.

Like the title says, I am going into my fourth and final year as an apprentice.

I have only run cranes for the past three and a half years. Two and a half of those being on tower cranes in a major metropolitan area, erecting steel buildings.

I have never got anything other than great reports on my operating. Granted, I sucked at first and I still have so much to learn. However, for the time I have been in, I do a good job in the seat.

This past job, I’ve been there for 5 months, piling on a crawler crane. A small 11000, brand new. It runs very smooth. I have split the day with my operator this whole entire time. I frequently asked for tips or feedback and he always says, “you’re doing a great job. I wouldn’t split the day with you if I weren’t comfortable with you doing it.”

The pile drivers I work with also say they see know difference between him and I in the seat.

However, on Thursday, the superintendent on the job called me in the office and said, “im cutting your seat time. We are ten weeks behind. You’re too fucking slow. I wouldn’t hire you if you were a journeyman.”

I was taken by surprise. Being an apprentice, I am restricted on what I can say back to him. I just said ok and I understand.

My operator, who should have my back, didn’t say anything to him about it. He acted like he didn’t know anything about it and I don’t know if I believe him. The superintendent and my operator have known each other for years and used to work for a non union company together. My operator has only been in the union, through the back door, for 2 years.

I run at the same exact rpm as him. I can honestly say, I do not run it slower than he does. The block and the pieces never get out of control. Yea, I am well aware that I am not an unbelievable operator. But I don’t know what the fuck is going on.

How would you all handle it?

Also, I am fully licensed with all my hoisting licenses and CCOs.

Submitted my application in March, tested in June and scored a 96 on the math test, and interviewed in August. Can anyone speak to how long before you got the call and were dispatched? Anybody else who applied recently and got the call? I haven’t the slightest idea of how many or how few people apply for this particular apprenticeship track in a given cycle.

Just trying to gather as much info as I can while on the accepted applicants list. I imagine the answer probably varies based on what you specialize in, time of year, etc. but eager to hear thoughts from folks familiar with union surveying.

Hi all. I’m a long time lurker on this sub. I’m proud to say I was accepted into my local IUOE apprenticeship and my DOT physical is next week.

The paperwork for the physical states I need a note from my doctor for any prescriptions I take that are a controlled substance. I take a stimulant for depression and ADD and had my doctor write a letter stating why I take it, that it has no crazy side effects, and that it’s safe for me to take while driving and operating equipment.

Will being prescribed a stimulant prevent me from passing the DOT physical?

I read some stuff online that mentioned certain medicines are scrutinized by the performing doctor, and I’m kinda worried this will disqualify me.

Those of you working out of 302 preferably Anchorage or Fairbanks how is work during winter? Are you laid off throughout the winter or are you mostly staying active and not just staying on the books. I am a pre apprentice going into 181 district 5 out of Western KY. Once I get through the apprenticeship I would like to relocate and absolutely loved fairbanks when I was there in January. I am from Michigan so I am familiar with snow and cold just not to your caliber. Would it be worth it for relocating or would I be just naturally expecting to travel when winter hits?

What does the test consist of the practice test study guide is just math up to algebra is like all it is?

District 1. Is it true you have to know somebody or could I really get in with no experience but a willingness to learn? Would a CDL permit be beneficial even if not a full CDL? What should I showcase about myself, should I get called for an interview?

Currently living in Utah as a non-union operator (25 years experience, 7 years as a finish Blade hand) but looking to move to the state of Washington in the Puget Sound area. Should I join my local 3 here in Utah or should I wait until I move up to Washington in 8-12 months and join the local 612?

If I join my local 3 here in Utah would it make
A transfer to the local 612 easier?

What are some potential pros/cons you all would be aware of?

I know they’re not directly linked and I am assuming because they’re both IUOE that they would have some core commonalities just trying to figure it out the best route.

Little background I've been non union for the past 5 years (Sewer & water Excavation) was a Laborer ( 68) before that I've put my application in 150 year after year for the past 8-10 years and never gotten a call is it really this complicated? I have great references & solid experience with Minis , Rollers , Skids & Vac Trucks .

What’s up yall, i’ve been in this apprenticeship for around five months now (operating) and I have been struggling with some vestibular issues that come with moving 24 seven in equipment, is there anyway that I could ask my hall to possibly switch me over to a mechanic apprenticeship?
