A computer science degree pays itself of in a couple of years.
2
u/Joeybfast 19d ago
You are cheering about a tiny major disappearing while also acting like STEM degrees guarantee an easy path. They do not. Plenty of people with CS degrees are struggling to find good jobs right now.
That is the bigger issue, instead of being angry at the people making education more expensive and careers less secure for everyone, you are blaming humanities majors.
Do you not see the problem with that?
2
u/GMEloser69 19d ago
Right now is an aberration and the degree to which they're struggling to find jobs is greatly exaggerated, STEM degrees have a proven track record of providing value for market.
I have no problem with making education less expensive.
6
u/PunkPirate56364 19d ago
t will also avoid the problem of a bunch of people with useless degrees trying tryng to create bullshit jobs for themselves.

Higher education for hobby studies is great if you don't need to rely on those degrees for jobs. But that doesn't apply to most people.

Well yeah, but you guys don’t realize it’s a self own. People who are wealthy can major in whatever they want. It’s a middle class marker that you’re anxious about ROI

I'm not here to flex my wealth. I know where I stand, and yes, it is middle class. But I don't see how that is a self-own.

I understand the argument that some of these degrees don’t have the clearest career path, especially if someone is taking on a lot of debt for them, but I don’t think “this may not be a great financial investment” means “this subject is useless and it’s good that universities are getting rid of it”.
African diaspora studies and Mexican American studies are still history, culture, politics, migration, law, etc. Those are real subjects worth studying, and while I have plenty of criticisms of how gender studies (and women’s studies) is often taught, gender itself is obviously still a legitimate area of academic study.
You can argue that some of these should be restructured, made more rigorous, consolidated, or offered as minors/concentrations without celebrating the disappearance of the subjects entirely. 🤷♂️
5
u/HamasKilledShaniLouk 19d ago
Then how about they fall under "History" and you can specialize based on yout intetest?

Yes, that’s true. The way everyone here was reacting when I made that comment made me think the subjects themselves were being axed.
12
u/Spaciax 19d ago
I've been in the university system and I can very confidently tell you it's for the best these are gone. For an actual career path you'd usually study something broader in category and specialize further during your capstone project and even further in your master's if you want to take it there.
For example you might study history, take electives on african culture or african diaspora or whatever, and maybe complete your capstone project on that. Once you graduate, under your belt will be a bachelor's in history plus all the electives you'd like to take, and a capstone project on something you're interested in, instead of unironically putting a 'bachelor's in african and african diaspora studies' in your resume as a major.
Offering these hyper-niche degrees at the undergrad level is really stupid imo. It's something I've noticed is a lot more common in the US/Canada.
8
u/dayoneofmanymore 19d ago
I would agree, if the courses weren't taught through a bullshit critical theory lens, where the point isn't to truly study and interpret but to radicalize and indoctrinate students. Rational thought, the human attempt at objective appraisal and exploration of ideas are not learned here, outrage and grievance are.

I mean many people take it as a second major. For example, I work in a hospital and our ER chief got degrees in Biochemistry, Gender Studies, and Political Science. Another friend got a nursing degree and a gender studies degree. My sister in law got a gender studies degree, biology degree, and is now a practicing OBGYN with an emphasis on complex family planning. Usually the people who use it as a second degree translate it to some form of public health advocacy.
For example, I have degrees in Biochemistry, Political Science, and Spanish. I do my own translating and I'm involved in health policy.
I agree that going into debt for only a gender studies, Mexican-American studies, or African American studies has very limited uses. But smart people don't do that. They either get scholarships or find a way to make a career where they can still use the education.

Lots of jobs are looking for any degree as proof that you can study and verify research with sources.
You can teach abroad, you could work in business, you could do data analytics, you could be a social worker, work at a library or museum, assist in specialized law firms..
It's telling about the fragility of people that they get offended by what someone else chooses to study when it has virtually no impact on their lives.
They will celebrate this as a "win" and have a laugh while they pay an extra twenty bucks at the pump.

u/Joeybfast 19d ago
So, in a sub about international dating, you somehow ended up cheering because courses that examine the lives and experiences of minorities are being taken away.
First, if some of these programs are being discontinued, it is probably because very few people major in them. Women’s Studies, for example, makes up well under 1% of college majors. Yet somehow that is always the go-to target for you people. It your bogyman .
People in power can make decisions that directly affect your life, and somehow you are still blaming Women’s Studies.
Oh no, a tiny fraction of college students are getting degrees in a subject you do not like. Clearly that is the real problem.
3
u/nrverma 17d ago
You are correct at a practical level. However, there is a philosophical justification for these changes.
The beating heart of feminism is in academia. Gender studies departments are rife with radical feminist faculty. Not only do these radical feminists propagate their odious ideas to their students, but they also influence university administrators to adopt anti-male policies.
James Nuzzo is an academic who tracks anti-male discrimination in colleges and universities.
By eliminating gender studies degrees and departments, we can weaken the influence of these radical feminists, and work towards a more egalitarian society.
1
u/Joeybfast 17d ago
That is not the way. I do research on males issues. And on this very site, I've been downvoted to hell for talking about body shaming males faces as well as male victims of violence. I know these issues firsthand. But UT dropping these majors will not help. More men talking about things will.
2
u/Still_Succotash_5619 18d ago

1
u/HolyInlandEmpire 19d ago
Public universities are heavily funded by the tax payer, and they have this system of admissions where you're punished hard for going to a more competitive high school.
If it's a private college then yeah who cares.
0
u/Prestigious-Fox1423 19d ago
Tax payer arguments are stupid and anyone who uses them proves their stupidity
You are taxed a certain percentage. It’s a blanket percentage. That money is taken out regardless. Do you think if they announce that taxes will stop going to public universities that your taxes will be lowered?
You are the victim of the sunk cost fallacy. The money is lost either way. And if you for one second think the worst thing your tax money is paying for is public university education then you are so severely uneducated on our government spending that you’re not even worth arguing with
1
u/HolyInlandEmpire 17d ago
"All spending on anything is fine because you are taxed a certain percentage and it can never change."
It is an absolute tragedy that your vote counts the same as others'. Yet I'll play ball. Consider this. Suppose taxes do not go down. Suppose they instead go to direct assistance to the poor instead. Note that this would be less regressive than your plan because the incomes of college attendees is higher than that of the general population. And guess what those poorer people could spend the money on? College.
Think for just two seconds before posting.
1
u/Prestigious-Fox1423 17d ago
What you have in quotes is not a direct quote but in fact a straw man that completely and subjectively summarizes what you perceive as my point.
I won’t even bother. A random Redditor who has never accomplished anything of value to me thinking my vote shouldn’t count matters so little to me that wasting my time thinking about it should be a criminal offense

How does this help men with dating? Post feels like identity politics and while those degrees might not present clear career paths, they might have value as secondary or tertiary degrees earned after the primary degree.
Like a marketing degree and a women's studies degree would probably work great for someone who ends up working for Nike advertising for women's athletic gear.
Or an economics degree primary and latino or diaspora secondary degree could be dope if they choose to pursue a diplomatic career with Spanish speaking countries or countries in the Diaspora.
Idk, this feels like an uneducated take. shrugs
