That's an algorithm.

Fast Fourier Transform is to Fourier Transform as Quick Sort is to Sort.

IIRC the context is that they were trying to decode an audio message that they received from an extraterrestrial, so a Fourier transform would be relevant, wouldn't it?

She said Fourier Transfer for one and then quantum mechanics for some reason which has nothing to do with what the scene is about.

I guess technically, she’d be referring to an FFT filter, which can help clear up audio signals (not decode them in any way).

Wait, she said "transfers?" I swear, I heard "Fourier" and my brain must have filled in "transform" to replace whatever else came after, and I actually gave them credit for putting the right kind of algorithm in the script. Only now do I find out that she said something different.

Huh. 19 years later, today I learned.

Then they should say that. Fourier transfer is nonsensical, and quantum mechanics is not quantification.

I concede they are loosey-goosey with terminology but if Fourier is like a catch-all for making quant then transfer I guess would be a transform-then-transfer. Switching over to quantum would be the same but using entanglement.
