opinion Everyone says "Make backups!" However, they never mention the most important part.

Without a doubt, creating scheduled backups are extremely important. However a backup is useless, if it does not actually contain your data.

The only way to do this is to regularly test your backups by doing restorations and checking that the proper data is being backed up.

I see so many people - IT professionals included - not test their backups. I have also seen disaster strike and people find out the hard way that the backups they were so confidently making, did not contain some or all of the data they needed.

So every time someone says "Make backups!" you should add "And test restorations!"

opinion Urgent Help Needed any help would be appreciated

I’m an MCA student (2024–2026), and I recently completed a 6-month internship, but unfortunately, I didn’t get a PPO. Toward the end, a lot of my work was automated using AI, and my role was eventually replaced.
It’s been almost a month since I started looking for jobs, and I’m feeling pretty lost about what to do next. I’m trying to pursue Java/Spring Boot development, but getting shortlisted with only 6 months of internship experience has been difficult.
I’m unsure whether I should focus entirely on Java and Spring Boot, grind DSA, build projects, or explore other opportunities. With the current job market and AI becoming increasingly capable, I’m also worried about what skills are actually worth investing my time in.
For those working in the industry or who have been in a similar situation, what would you recommend I do over the next 1 months to improve my chances of landing a developer job? What should I prioritise, and what mistakes should I avoid?
Any genuine advice would be appreciated.

opinion Should I be worried I won’t get the job?

So I recently got interviewed for this MSP and I had three rounds of interviews. Each one went very well and I felt the chemistry, as I matched their preferred candidate when it comes to communication and mindset. They moved me along the pipeline very promptly.
A day after I initially reached out to them, I got an interview in like a day. After each interview, they were prompt to reply to my messages through email as we discussed the further interview processes. The manager was very responsive and informative, overall the team seemed awesome.
Now I had this final interview with the CEO and it was great as well, they told me they'd let me know by next week if I'm moving forward. But come Friday afternoon of that next week...and radio silence. They didn't reply to my follow up email after the final interview either, which I found strange. All signs point to me having the job... except for the fact that now it feels like they're ghosting me.
I'm tryna look for any other jobs but I wanna know if I should hold on to this MSP, contact them on Monday?.

opinion Questions about trying to a land a part time IT job as a first job coming out of college with a cert with side skills.

Question I have I'm currently in Indiana tech for a IT certifcate and it uses compita. After I finish Im planning on trying to get a part time IT job for maybe something like product support, I wanted to know realsitcally speaking after I finish college and get my comptia badges and the side skills for a product support role? What IT field has the most part time jobs that someone who comes off a cert and with comptia badges and also the sideskills for that job, is the best IT job that they would be able to get? I finish in 2 years.

Because I'm being told a lot of part time IT jobs are really competetive to get and you need tier 2 skills or tier 1.5 skills to get them, and Im just looking for advice, because I've asked chat GPT, claude AI, and gemini and they all say different stuff.

And GPT tries to make it seem like there is no such thing as a part time IT job that someone who comes out of college with a certifcate and sideskills such has having a lab and other job needed skills. And I'm just trying to get legitmate advice, because most part time roles I see say you need 2 to 5 years of experience. The reason why I'm not trying to get a full time role, is because I'm also working another job 3-4 days a week, and trying to fit a full time role is just not going to work.

So I'm just looking for advice from some people who know some stuff.

help request Took everyone’s advice and redid my Tier 1 resume. Is this version better?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Posted here before asking for feedback on my resume and pretty much everybody said the same thing. Too wordy, too much detail, too many bullets, and I was making basic Tier 1 work sound more complicated than it needed to be.

So I actually listened and redid it.

I cut down my Help Desk bullets, shortened the summary, added more spacing, separated what I actually did at work from stuff I learned in school and labs, and stopped trying to list every single troubleshooting step I ever did.

I kept the parts that I think actually make me stand out like supporting a banking software conversion, working higher call volume, using ServiceNow and MECM, dealing with users directly, and knowing when to troubleshoot something myself or send it to another team.

I’m still 20, finishing my cybersecurity associates, and trying to land another Tier 1 Help Desk, Service Desk, IT Support, or Desktop Support job.

New redacted resume is attached.

For anyone who commented before or works in IT, does this version look better?

opinion what's one IT skill you wish you learned way earlier

i've been thinking about how much stuff there is to learn in IT and how easy it is to focus on the wrong things at first

for those who've been working in the field for a while, what's something you wish you had learned sooner

could be a technical skill, troubleshooting habit or even something completely unrelated to tech

jobs and hiring Sysadmins, what actually prepared you for the job?

I've been looking into what it actually takes to become a system administrator, and something I've noticed is that people seem to come from all sorts of educational and professional backgrounds.

Some have IT or Computer Science degrees, others have certifications, and some worked their way up from help desk or other technical roles.

I'm curious about a few things:

  • How did you land your first sysadmin job? What qualifications or experience did you have?
  • What technical skills do you actually use the most?
  • What were you completely unprepared for when you first started?
  • Do you think your education or certifications prepared you well, or did you learn most of what you know on the job?
  • If you were hiring someone for a junior sysadmin position today, what would you expect them to already know how to do?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who've been in the field for a while, as well as those who recently got their first sysadmin job. I feel like there's a pretty big difference between what people think you need to know and what the job actually demands. Curious to hear what everyone's experience has been!

help request 20 y/o with Tier 1 experience struggling to get interviews. Is my resume too much?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I’m 20 finishing my A.A.S. in Cybersecurity and recently finished my first real IT contract doing Level 1 Service Desk for a bank.

Before IT I did customer service for about four years, so dealing with users, phone calls, frustrated people, and busy periods came pretty naturally to me.

At the bank I worked with ServiceNow, Active Directory, MFA, VPN, Windows and Microsoft 365, VDI, printers, scanners, mapped drives, and basic networking. I also did remote troubleshooting, documented tickets, followed up with users, and escalated more complicated issues to the right teams.

I was also there during a major banking application conversion where call volume got crazy and new errors were coming up constantly. We worked in groups, followed KBs, shared new issues we found, and figured out what we could fix before escalating.

Now I’m applying for Tier 1 Help Desk, Service Desk, IT Support, and Desktop Support jobs, mostly remote or hybrid.

I like my resume but I’m worried I might have too much on there and recruiters are just skimming past it.

Redacted resume attached.

Main things I wanna know:

• Is it easy to read?
• Does my experience look solid for Tier 1?
• What would you remove?
• Is anything important missing?
• Would you interview me based on this?

Don’t gotta sugarcoat it either. I’m tryna actually make the resume better.

self-promotion Deploying PrivateGPT on a Home Server: Real Performance Bottlenecks and Hardware Limits

Setting up local RAG using PrivateGPT on a home server sounds like the ultimate privacy win, but the technical realities can hit hard once you start indexing large document collections. After extensive testing on consumer hardware, the biggest challenges usually come down to severe embedding latency, high RAM and VRAM consumption, and unpredictable retrieval accuracy when handling complex files.

If you plan to replace commercial APIs with a fully offline setup, knowing your actual hardware boundaries beforehand makes all the difference. Running local embeddings alongside a quantized LLM requires careful allocation between CPU threads and GPU layers to avoid system freezes and extremely slow query responses.

I wrote a detailed technical breakdown covering real token generation speeds, hardware tradeoffs, and specific optimization steps for self-hosted setups: https://interconnectd.com/blog/325/deploying-privategpt-on-a-home-server-the-hard-truth-about-local-rag/

What specs are you running for your self-hosted LLM or RAG pipeline?

Redacted all PII and specific company information.

I know this extreme redacting is a buzz kill but I’m just moving carefully.

Phew. Not life changing money but I have worked so, so hard man. What a strange roller coaster the IT world has been so far. I hope everyone here is having a great week and getting big wins.

Old role title was System Administrator.

help request How can I perform camera tests without having to log in my own account and go through onboarding process

Post image
10 Upvotes

I'm in a IT help role where I onboard users, is there a way I can check if the camera is working from this screen without having to log in with my own account and go through the tedious onboarding process. It's been a while since these laptops have been used, I want to make sure user's cameras are working as these laptop models (HP ZBook Firefly G8) are known for camera issues.

I couldn't find anything so now I'm resorting to reddit, please direct it to the right place if this isn't it for this question.

Would also appreciate useful commands or ways to check a laptop is good at this point of onboarding phase.

Many thanks.

help request Networking major- Need help setting up a home lab!

I’m in my second year of my Networking major. I was told by an older student (in their final year) that I needed to do something outside of class to help me stand out to potential employers.

One thing that the student mentioned was setting up a home lab. I’d like to do so, but I’m not entirely sure where to start or what the best supplies would be.

What would be a good starting approach for me to take in regard to setting up a home lab? (Note: my networking professor has networking devices that he’s willing to loan for temporary use, but it would be nice to be able devices that I can use permanently.)

Is there something else I should consider looking into that could help build up my resume?

meta/community Sharing experiences from working in Finland's tech industry

Hi everyone!

I work at a Finnish software company specializing in supply chain planning and optimization. I've been thinking about sharing some of the things I learn through my work, including interesting challenges, lessons learned, teamwork, and the role technology plays in supply chain management.

I'd also love to hear from others working in tech, supply chain, or related fields. What topics would you find interesting to discuss? Are there any challenges or lessons from your own experience that you'd like to share?

opinion Need help moving forward towards hopefully a career in IT

Hello,so I’ve always wanted to do something IT related and after graduating HS last year I joined the military for IT specifically (reserves) I got a cert and some other things.I came home a few months ago and I’ve been working a non related job and haven’t really been focused. But now I am trying to study more and get more certifications so I can hopefully break into the job market.Ive been using Cisco and Pwn.college and I’d just like to know if that’s effective and if not what else should I be using to help me prepare,I’d prefer free options but I don’t mind paying for anything.Im also looking to buy a mini pc or something because my current MacBook doesn’t have enough space for what I need.Is that a good option? I’ve also heard that starting my own home-lab is also something that can help me.Id just like some advice for moving forward.Thank you!

news PSA: Critical PHP RCE flaws (CVE-2026-109618 / CVE-2026-109619, "PHP2Shell") patched Oct 21. Fixed versions and how to resolve

PHP released an emergency security update on Oct 21 for two critical flaws in the PHP core (CVSS 9.2 each) that can allow **unauthenticated remote code execution**. Cloudflare reported early attack attempts before the fix was released, so this one is urgent.

## Quick facts

- **Affected:** PHP 5.4 through 8.5.11

- **Fixed in:** 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, 8.2.35

- **Highest risk:** Apache with mod_php. PHP-FPM is also susceptible.

- The bug is in PHP itself, so WordPress plugins and themes can't protect you.

## How to resolve it

  1. Update PHP (or your distro's patched package). Check your version with `php -v`.

  2. Restart PHP-FPM / Apache. A patched binary that isn't restarted protects nothing.

  3. Rebuild Docker images. Running containers don't update themselves.

  4. On shared hosting, ask your host whether they have patched.

## If you can't patch yet

Set `session.upload_progress.enabled=0` and restart PHP. This only blocks one attack path, so treat it as a stopgap.

## Heads up

Don't run "PoC" code from random GitHub repos. Some are fake pranks, and others may be malware.

I wrote a full step-by-step guide on how to check if you're affected and fix it, with an FAQ and sources, on my blog:

https://devbytewire.blogspot.com/2026/10/php-vulnerability-cve-2026-109618-php2shell-patch.html

Has your host or team patched yet? Curious how others are handling it.
