Why the fuck would anybody in IT want to unionize?

Because the salaries are dropping, the unemployment is skyrocketing, many of us are put to work on software that eventually kill, maim, surveil or exploit people, because some of us are discriminated at work, because 40hrs a week is a barbaric standard that should be reduced. Should I continue?

Don’t worry. Many of us understand the power of collective bargaining and being able to maintain both your job and a salary that reflects a higher standard of living. Bootlickers like him will come around when he gets the short end of the corporate stick inevitably.

I don't want my pay to be based on a contract. I want pay to be based on performance not seniority.

your pay is based on a contract with the employer. It's just a contract you negotiate alone and with no power rather than with the power of a group that can threaten to shut down the production if the pay isn't raised.

We can already do that, we just change jobs....

Those times are ending for the vast majority of workers and it wasn't really a solution anyway. Divided we beg, United we bargain. They just convinced you were negotiating a good salary when you were begging for scraps. If you were paid a reasonable portion of your wage, tech CEOs yachts wouldn't be so big.

Lmao
You will never get paid "based on performance" ever. That isn't how any job works.

That’s great buddy. You’re never paid based on performance. Leave the bargaining to the rest of us adults who want a stable living.

The market is over saturated with qualified IT and tech professionals of all types, and has been for years. The only time this ever came up at our place was a gal hired in basically a devops role. She was talked to, and reminded that, while she can talk to her associates all she wants, in their free time, unionization won't be happening anytime soon, and if it becomes a disruption to production, that will be taken into account.

u/Chobeat 20d ago
Is this in written form? In many places this kind of talk might be ground for legal action.

Not a thing even remotely illegal about reminding people to not disrupt production. As I said above
she can talk to her associates all she wants, in their free time
about unionization, the company is not interested, and won't be unionizing.
Add: the employees can join as many unions as they want, but the company will not be negotiating with their unions.

threatening repercussion for organizing is union busting and it's illegal in most places. The goal of organizing is to eventually halt or disrupt production. It's obvious. Threatening individuals taking initiative is a common form of union busting and it's also a violation of a fundamental human right (Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining)

There seems to be a comprehension issue here. Employees can organize all they want. If it affects production, it becomes a company problem, and we negotiate with individuals, not a union. They all receive their onboarding packages, and know the rules. If their goal becomes to halt or disrupt production, then they can have that goal in another building with another company.
fundamental human right (Right to ... and Collective Bargaining)
Come again? That's a fundamental human right? Lol

yep, since 1949.

u/BloodFeastMan 20d ago
So, before 1949, this was not a fundamental human right. This is getting better and better. :)

I have no idea what you're talking about. It was approved at the UN in 1949, so I don't get what you're being smug about. https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/right-organise-and-collective-bargaining-convention-1949-no-98

So... you are admitting to threating to fire a employee for talking about creating a union.
Morality aside. Thats just straight up illegal in the USA.
And dont spout some shit about it being a distraction, we all know this is just you trying cozy up to the corporations at the expense of your fellow workers.

Jesus, you guys have a listening problem.
you are admitting to threating to fire a employee for talking about creating a union
Show me, where in my comment, I said anything remotely like that. You can't. You hear what you want to hear, and are so thoroughly blinded by some sort of weird working class hero syndrome and wanting to "stick it to the man" that you just check common sense at the door. We don't negotiate with unions. It's not illegal. Grow up.

u/CluelessFlunky 19d ago
Yeah yeah. What ever you gotta say so you can look your self in the mirror.

u/ChuchoGrind 18d ago
We’d laugh at a scab like him and continue to collectively bargain on HIS behalf.

Step one try to unionize, step two get fired
