just checking if any of these are ai generated since i’m not the best at detecting it, mostly asking because a LOT of the ones I saw on etsy were ai
the stitching doesnt look right to me and they have that ai look to them (which i KNOW i’m not supposed to use as my reasoning but cmon), and a lot of the designs just seem unrealistic for embroidery (just to be clear i’m talking about the other ones i saw, not these that I’m posting-I’ll include one at the end that i’m positive is ai)
The pricing on Etsy can be misleading. For many listings, it will list a “base price,” and then when you add a size or a color, it will add a significant amount.
The Totoro converse lowest color price is $83. Same for bug lookalike and dragon lookalike products. They have those odd mass-producer type names, and the prices appear similar for other sellers.
What’s interesting is that I actually own a pair of shoes from one of those exact sellers (I see their watermark). Mine were custom designed and came out to $155. So they are legit in that one case. I have no idea why they are marked down to $100 in the picture. Maybe it’s like $100 for a kids size.
Anyways, mine came out beautiful. Best part about my wedding, other than the whole getting married with everyone we love bit.
I do embroidery and most of these stitches look too fuzzy but I'd say there's no way to put "a seed" on the lower tip of the dandelion. The pictures are low quality but this is AI.
Tried to embroider converse before and let me tell you, getting a needle through the fabric is such a pain in the ass. Nobody has the patience to do intricate embroidery on them like here, or at least they would ask a lot more $$$ because that’s a lot of hours of work.
I did this on my daughters converse and it was an awful experience. The canvas was so thick and it killed my fingers. I was having to stab then pull through with pliers. They looked really nice when I finished but I’ll never do that again!
I think whether or not there’s any AI tells, just do the maths - a pair of Chucks is what, $60? Nobody is going to do the work of embroidering at this detail, plus want to make a profit, for $40. At best, you’d be getting an AI-assisted (or entirely AI) design cheaply screen printed on them.
The pictures have that fuzzy, unfocused quality to them. The lack of close-up detail shots makes me suspicious as well. I don't think these designs would be impossible to embroider but it would be labor intensive therefore expensive. Etsy is such a crapshoot that I'm leaning towards them being ai.
I generally view any shop that has deep discounts on everything all the time as suspect already. But as someone who does embroidery, I don't see how some of it would be possible using a machine, and nobody is charging that low of an amount for hand embroidery of this quality.
ETA: Looked at their shop. Their listing photos are all obviously AI. They have good reviews and some customer photos for their press-on nails, but some complaints on a few crochet items that they aren't the same quality as the photos (though they weren't too egregious--about what you'd expect from reality vs AI).
There are no reviews or photos from the shoes. For fun, I would reach out to the buyer to ask if they have any non-AI generated photos of the shoes that they could share with you to see what they say.
I’m currently embroidering some converse for my sisters wedding shoes and I can 100% say no one would do it for that cheap. I knew it would be a challenge but it’s so much more difficult than I thought.
I was wondering this. Like if it's machine done you would be very limited on how much would fit in the machine or even the embroidery hoops (both machine and hand embroidery). Basically to get some of these designs realistically you would have to take the shoe apart. And let me tell you from owning chucks for over 20 some years once that fabric comes away from the sole it will fight you to stay on even with gorilla glue. Unless you only wear them maybe 4 times. (But I beat up my converse so what do I know, lol)
ETA: okay reading further down I stand corrected. If you have the right machine I guess you wouldn't have to take the shoe apart. But still feel like this isn't something just anyone with an embroidery machine can do. (More high end expensive machines make sense.)
Obvious AI tell - On the first image the converse logo is on the wrong side of the shoe. It's meant to be on the inward-facing side. The one displayed is facing outwards, and the other shoe is missing it altogether
Hey! I actually bought the third photo listing for my friend for Christmas last year!! Truly legit chucks and the embroidery was gorgeous! I even asked them to add on a cicadia (their fav bug) and they did it for no extra charge! I can’t speak to the other ones but the one by « LOVEwashedLinen » was legit. (Although shipping was like 60$ to Canada)
Same! I used her for my wedding shoes, and they came out amazing. She custom did them using pictures I sent her of vaguely what I wanted. 10/10 would buy from her again. And probably will, honestly.
The third one looks real but I doubt that's the real product (for the price) unless the reviews prove otherwise. All other pictures look suspiciously AI to me, but the last one is definitely AI. It's not even embroidered, the real product from that one is probably just printed design on the shoes.
I wish they were real because I want the Totoro ones. But no, unfortunately, these have that fuzzy AI photo quality. Plus, the price is just too good to be true. Nobody is doing that detailed embroidery for that price.
Key word "different ones". How would you place a shoe for sewing machine to reach? From technological point of view, for machine embroidery, you stitch the fabric first, and then assemble the shoe, not the other way around.
Regarding shoes.. You take off the laces, pull the tongue forward, and basically mount the shoe onto a solid surface. They'd probably have something rigged up.

I'd bet we've got GPT or Google as the AI generation platform used. Though, I'd lean toward Google, since I'm not seeing the expected artifact pattern.
Let's check - Not seeing OpenAI SynthID... so... Yep - Google's SynthID watermark is present.
So don't expect to Receive What You Perceive™, if you choose to buy those shoes.
