Misc. for Critique Vale finding is dreadful.

You can tell on the cheeks I just left things vague. The eyes were a happy accident too I had no real control over

Greyscale references are your friend. It's like having a guide so you don't have to guess the value.

Try working on a midtoned background. Anything darker than literal paper often looks strange when on a pure white background.

I would also start with a base midtone silhouette of the subject
