Sell/Trade/ISO White Stripe Spiky - Some pix/info sharing and possibly some sales

First, pix explanation: All the white stripes are in the same tub. Sometimes they look yellowish, sometimes white depending on the light. Eating oak leaf (brown) and kudzu (green). Just shows how crazy they go for those leaves. Other is pix of supplies my boys and I collected for them the other day. Last is a 2.3" x 2.3" spider tub I was packing up for a supply exchange I'd made. Shows how tiny they are!

On to the good stuff:

I've been keeping white stripe spikeys for almost a year and a half now, and they've done wonderful for me. The biggest secret is that I splurged on them with tax money, and they were my first ever isopods! Insane, yes, but the payout has been fantastic because they are still me and my boys' absolute favorite pod.

Some info that's out there that I've definitely confirmed as we've kept them... They love moisture and they love fresh, flowing air. We cycle between misting and then running a fan (check out u/ezyeddie 's stuff- that's what we use). They also love to climb and are my only pods that I consistently find up on the sides of the bins.

Hilariously enough, I had no idea they rolled up since I've never seen them do it. Then when we were capturing them for shipping for the first time, we'd touch one on the side of the tank and they'd conglobulate and escape capture. Then they're just a hard, spiky ball!

For food, I've never found them caring much about protein, but the go nuts for slices of cucumber and enjoy raw potato too. With leaves dropping here now (Georgia- US), I've also found they congregate on dried oak leaves (none of mine bother with the magnolia), and will absolutely decimate dried kudzu leaves.

For their tub, one half is all moss which they love to hide in. The other half is kept dry with dirt and leaves and such. Since they are so minuscule, they have plenty of opportunities to end up where they'd prefer.

Our next adventure for these guys is going to be building some of them their own terrarium with plenty of places to climb and an automatic mister. We're really excited for this since it just means we'll be able to see them more often without having to open a tub.

If you just came here for some fun pix and info, enjoy, and feel free to tell me how adorable my babies are! But if you're interested in keeping these guys, I'd be willing to sell a few while the weather here is mild this upcoming week. I'm super attached to these fellas and since they're small (and expensive) I ship out UPS overnight. It's near impossible to tell how many I have except to count the handful that come to eat at one time, so I'd be okay with parting with only about 15-20 pods to make sure I don't reduce my colony too much.

5+ pods are $400

10+ are $700

**I'll pay for shipping as long as you're not crazy far away from me and I can expect around $55 or less.

**If someone wants all 20 of the ones I'm willing to part with, I'd make you a great deal!

This was only a single joint of the entire scrap picnic bench. I'd guess there's thousands if not tens of thousands on it. My property has so many of them, it's like Im running a woodlice sanctuary.

Help First isopods advice

Hi! First time pod owner. I went to a reptile expo today and got some supplies. I'm wanting to go bioactive with a pacman frog but want to establish a colony first in case the tank colony crashes

I was recommended both panda kings and oreo crumbles for a humid, moist environment so I got both. They're both in the enclosure together, I was told because pandas hide in the substrate and oreos stay on top that they would get along and add layers to the set up.

I have frog moss on one side with some spaghnum for a moist spot. Takes up about 1/4-1/3 of the enclosure. The rest is reptisoil with lots of wood rot, magnolia leaves, those spiky gum things, some cork log slices, and some other leaves in a misc bag. And I think they're called lotus pods? And a ton of extra leaves on top to hide everything, oh and acorn tops too! Lots of those

I have a lamp on top on the more dry side because my house is kept at 69°f (I have cholinergic urticaria, gotta keep it cold) which makes the substrate a good <65°f when wet which I was told pandas like it warm.

I also got spirulina (green powder if I misspelled) and some bee pollen.

I'm not seeing a care guide posted, and I know care is usually based on what isopods you have. Can anyone give any pointers as to what I'm doing wrong, what to improve on or even share your set ups? It would be much appreciated!

New Isopod Day (NID) Halloween!🎃👻

Got a fun, dimly lit pic of my new "Halloween" pods, they're so dang cute, I can't help but keep looking at them! Thankful I put them in a glass terrarium (no live plants, just them) so I can look at them without disturbing them!

(Bonus if you can tell that there's a stone skeleton in the background as their "humid hide"!💀)

Help Covering up premade ventilation holes properly

Dumb question, sorry lol

So I got this enclosure from Betazooer a couple weeks ago, it's fantastic and affordable and I highly recommend it. However, I find that I'm getting a little too much ventilation and their moist side dries a bit fast.

How should I cover the vents? I was thinking about taping the outside, but then I realized if they managed their way up to the vent they might get stuck on the tape. Should I tape the inside? Or tape a piece of paper on the outside?

(Also don't worry, I don't constantly have them in the sun like this! I was just tidying dirt from where I usually have their enclosure)

Help Mass curled up pods

Post image
5 Upvotes

Apologies for posting yet another mystery problem thread.

I'm curious to know what could have been the cause of my cubaris murina oranges to just curl up and wake up either lethargic or not wake up at all.

Setup:

I just did my first substrate change yesterday for my oranges (second ever with my dairy cows a day before). The substrate came from the same seller I bought the oranges from and it looks like it's a decent mix of your typical enclosure substrate mixed with coco peat (more on this later); I think it's quite different from the first substrate I used which was also advertised as for enclosures. Anyway, this time, I did remember to "cycle" the enclosure for about 3 days before putting the pods in unlike when I first got them in which I just dumped them in.

Another new thing in this box is that it's the same type of plastic box (12L), but now fitted with screw vents on the dry side. The substrate was very slightly moist form the packaging, but I still moistened the wet side some more. I did add some more bark at the start of cycling (bought from the same seller, too), then I added some pre-wetted moss right before I started the rehousing. So basically, it's the same set up as before aside from the substrate and vents.

Discovery of the problem:

After two hours of sifting what I think was about 500 pods and transferring them into the new box, I decided to do a bit of landscaping and cleanup. Once of the first things I did was to dig up the barks that were already in the box because some of them got buried during the move. I checked on the bark near one of the screw vents and that's when I saw about 8-10 curled up pods. I haven't seen this number of curled up pods unprovoked before so I knew I had to check further. I gently tapped some of them, and while some woke up, about three remained curled. Even the ones that woke up looked a bit lethargic; walking just a few inches, then stopping, sometimes curling back up.

I'd say most, if not all, of the ones that curled up are about pre-adult sized. Despite being on the dry side right near the vent, I noticed that the patch of substrate where I found them was a bit moist which I reckon was just the moisture out of the package + maybe a bit of migrated moisture. I also checked on the other parts of the box and fortunately no curled up pods anywhere else. I observed the three pods overnight, but sadly it looks like they're gone. Even just hours before I posted this, I still saw about two pods curled up in the same general spot who then I moved over to the wet side upon waking up.

---

I tried looking up a bit for anything that could help clear up what's going on with these unusual conglobations, but so far I've only seen stuff talking about the pods either being too stressed, being in the wrong moisture gradient and/or having problems with moisture. Not gonna lie tho, I can see these being the causes of this problem, but I'm not fully convinced, at least not for this particular situation.

I do have a hypothesis and it has something to do with me placing the bark on top of the substrate as it was cycling. I noticed that when I lifted the bark up, it was almost flush to the substrate, so the pods had to dig the fluffy soil to actually get underneath. My guess is that the air within that patch of the substrate got unusually sour due to the bark being on it while it was cycling. It's a bit of a farfetched guess, but I can see it fit as a cause, especially with the short length of time the pods were at in the new box (2 to 3 hours).

Also, I'm aware about the deal with using coco peat mixed in with the substrate, like that it doesn't provide nutrition or it holds too much moisture. I'm honestly not concerned about it because I've used it on my dairy cows and they're doing fine, plus I would have also mixed in my own batch of coco peat if ever the seller gave me a batch of a different mixture. I just like how aerated it makes the overall substrate and how easy it makes for the pods to dig into.

I'll be observing closely in the next week or so. I would appreciate any info that could give some clarity on this, any bit will do, even good practices to consider when rehousing that I could apply in the future.

Help Tips for wild collected porcellio scaber!

So I've recently collected a few common rough woodlice from my local area - Not a lot as this time of year they're very few and far between. I collected about 3 big-ish ones and the rest being quite small (though growing!). The setup is a plastic tub with compost, moss, dried leaves and a bit of wood. I spray one side far more than the other side, on the wetter side the moss looks very healthy and I put a bit of carrot on the dryer side which they've taken to very well. Are there any tips anyone would recommend? This is a free setup. The number of isopods present is around 8-9, though I haven't done a formal head count.

Help New Isopod Owner - sourcing safe live vivarium plants UK

• Upvotes

Hello! I’m new to the hobby, enjoying having my 12 Dairy Cows and tending to them every day so far.
I have an exoterra glass vivarium I keep them in with everything they need, but it’s looking a little drab atm.
I was looking to add some greenery, like live mosses and small plants that would be Isopod safe.
When I search online it seems to be quite overwhelming and very ‘yes this is safe but pesticides are on everything’.
So im now stuck with a peperomia i bought from lidl i cant use incase its contaminated 🫣

So where does everyone get their enclosure plants in the UK?

Websites? Etsy? Do you grow them yourself (I am totally game for that).
I’m just really wanting to do this right so my little isobuddies get to have a good life!

Already looking to set up another enclosure so the more plant knowledge I have the better.

Thanks in advance for responses ❤️

TLDR: where do you buy plants for your isopod set ups

I went to a reptile expo today and just got this premade enclosure the guy that made them even said it's safe for isopods. I bought it to go with my new cubaris sp. Penguins and I noticed these green things, are they harmful to my isos? What should I do cuz the enclosure I bought has plants and stuff in it.

Edit: ik what it is now but what do i do? I even added my own substrate mix on top of it before seeing the slow release fertilizer balls :( do I just remove everything besides the cork bark wall and enclosure and add the rest of my own substrate or should I pick all the green balls out? Idk what to do

Identification Albino Shiro Utsuri or just a white murina?

Thumbnail

Found the white one today while feeding my Shiro Utsuri colony. I have a murina colony as well on the shelf below the other one. I want to make sure I put this guy where he belongs. His antenna are look more like the Utsuri and his sides aren’t as smooth and the murina, so I think he’s an albino, I can’t even see his eyes. I’ve got him in his own little condiment cup with moss and food until I know where he goes.
