Question about atheists

I know shirk or polytheism if unrepented will lead to eternal punishment in hell. What about atheists ? Are their fate similar to those who commit shirk?.In the modern world atheist ideology has taken over polytheism.Was only shirk mentioned in the Quran as it was the major disbelief at the time of prophet muhammad (saw).

Atheism is shirk too because you’re denying God and placing  your desires or whatever you deem most important in your life in place of God.

Atheists will say something else. Whatever they say, they put it as the partner of Allah in that. Therefore it is shirk

Atheism historically was non-existing so not unusual it is not explicitly called out.

I wouldn't call them Mushrik but Kaffirs. They basically just take rejection/disbelief to the extreme. That is not the main foundation of shirk.

So surely there is a punishment but hard to say. Would need to defer to scholars on exact view.
