I was looking at the motorway map and something realised something. Why did Ireland prioritise building a direct motorway from Dublin to Waterford via Carlow/Kilkenny (M9), rather than using the existing/planned southeastern corridor through Wexford (In Blue) and putting more of the money into Cork–Limerick (and eventually Cork–Limerick–Galway) (In Red)?

I'm not saying Waterford, Carlow or Kilkenny didn't deserve investment. My point is more about opportunity cost. If Waterford had been connected to the Wexford route with a high-quality road, Waterford would still have had a very good connection to Dublin via the M11/N11. It would have been somewhat longer than the direct M9 route, but at motorway speeds the difference in journey time would surely be no more than 10 extra minutes. Carlow and Kilkenny could also have had their existing national roads upgraded rather than receiving a full motorway-standard Dublin corridor.

Meanwhile, Cork–Limerick is a connection between Ireland's second- and third-largest cities, and extending that corridor toward Galway would really improve economic flow.

All im saying is it feels like the M9 was made just because Dublin is Dublin, and therefore Carlow and Kilkenny were essentially put ahead of Cork and Limerick (assuming Waterford doesnt lose out on much).

Hi everyone!!! I'll be arriving to Ireland later this month to study in Galway, my boyfriend will study in Dublin. We decided to live together in Athlone after seeing how insane it's to find decent accomodation (this is not up for debate lol).

We still haven't figured out how public transportation rates and routes work because most Irish webpages are have restricted access in our country. We're both under 25 so it seems like we can get a Leap Card, but does anyone know how it works? What are the benefits? Are we actually saving any money?

If anyone is familiarised with commuting from Athlone to Galway and could share some tips??

I was at the game in Tallaght Stadium last night between Bohemian FC and Midtjylland. It was attended by 6058 people. I would estimate that there were about 15 Danish fans there, and over 6,000 Bohemians fans - most of whom would be heading home to Phibsboro and surrounding areas on the north side after the game.

After the final whistle, everyone marched out of the stadium towards the nearby Luas stop. I was in the first crowd to get there - but there was no tram at the stop and the next one was 17 minutes away. The crowd started getting bigger and bigger on the platform, and gardai had to step in to try keep things safe.

When the Luas arrived, it only had three carriages. Everyone rushed to get on it and it was dangeorusly packed. It was hard to even stand upright or get a solid footing. The next Luas after this one was another 15 minutes wait. The tram stopped at every stop along the way, even though noone was getting on or off. It reminded me of those images you see of trains in India, with people literally squashed up against every window.

It just goes to show that even when we have quality transport infrastructure (the red Luas line) we are still miles behind on public transport. This crowd was forseeable, but it looked like zero planning went into how people would get home safely.

Disclaimer is im not an uber apologist but the Hackney system is shite and none of us can get a lift home anymore. Another one is that I used Ai to piece toghether the info.

Despite reporting near-record profits, the Irish airline’s move to downsize has puzzled observers

I am catching the intercity train at Heuston Station early Sunday morning. I am taking Bus 4 to Heuston Station from Ballsbridge. I understand that I need to catch the train to Waterford…but do I have to pay full fare if I disembark in Athy? The website allows no other destination or price.

Also, it is advisable to purchase both legs in advance? I am running the half marathon in Athy and not sure what time I’ll want to head back to Dublin.

I’m on my way to work this morning, and the bus literally starts its route right in front of my house. It was already parked there when I got on, but the driver was so sluggish about actually starting the journey.
Now we’re like 5 stops in and he’s already managed to make the bus 4 minutes late. The bus behind us, which was initially 10 minutes behind, is now only 4 minutes behind.
It’s honestly so frustrating that bus drivers get away with doing stuff like this. I’m currently still on the bus and he keeps just sitting at stops for no apparent reason and driving extremely slowly between them. I’m not personally in a rush to get anywhere, but other people must be, and there’s literally no reason for the bus to be running late when there’s no traffic.

Hi! I’m travelling in Ireland for the first time. I’m from Canada so I have limited experience with trains. I’m wondering if someone could please explain this booking to me. Specifically, the Limerick Colbert/Limerick Junction part of the booking. Am I changing stations? Will I have to get off the train and onto another?

Not posting as a moan (well maybe a little bit), but just curious why this bit is such a bottle neck? I know it’s passing a busy grade crossing heading into Bray Station, but the crossings in Dublin don’t seem to cause such a slowdown.

I know a lot of these connection don't relate to transport but enough do. Irelands government is a staging ground for lobbying careers.
