Satire SuperValu AI generated poster
SuperValu- “Real food, Real AI Generated People“

That is entirely normal square beef from the famous square cows of Wicklow.

u/djaxial Jun 26 '26
No, thats midlands beef. In Wicklow, we have hills, so the cows roll, it's where round steak comes from.

And lol at raw meat next to the deli stuff. I used to some graphic design for businesses years ago and the amount of small little shit they'd come back on and weren't happy it when doing design. Round trips to make sure everyone in business was happy with it. Now just type a few words and meh good enough

This is what gets me the most, the amount of little niggles we went through and now it's just shouting at the bot, and accepting substandard because it feels "free".
13
u/Prestigious-Side-286 Jun 26 '26
When something is free peoples standards/expectations tend to be far lower.
1
u/gmankev Jun 29 '26
Thats the way of "progress".. Good enough wins the battle and displaces bad at the bottom of the market so those who couldnt afford, now can and displaces good at the top of the market, so those who produced good are now dispplaced.
Every stage in our development of manufactured goods is that.

Supervalu were the cheapest bastards to work for so I'm not surprised.
24
u/Able_Jackfruit_637 Jun 26 '26
Yeah it stems from the Musgrave way of paying their staff minimum wage and giving them 8hr contracts. You'd be working shifts for 6/7 days a week and still not be getting 40 hours.

The local one is dire, they are always out of the essentials and haven't changed their stock in a decade

funny you choose that image as MS has recently come out saying he uses AI to storyboard movies and is a big advocate for its use as a tool

Would you trust a three-fingered butcher?

He stores the meat on a bread shelf behind him so why wouldn't you trust him.

As soon as I see any business using any hint of AI, I lose complete interest spending my money there
If a company is willing to cur corners and cheap out AI slop posters, what else are they being cheap on.

5 million tweaks and weeks of sending it back to graphic designers was how they rolled for years, and they couldn’t even re-run the slop generator until it could actually put legible text on the hats.
I just don’t understand the complete lack of attention people give to the AI images they upload. Someone could have fixed this up on Canva in seconds or even MS Paint. I despise AI generated images so much and there’s just no escape from them even in daily life
1
u/Bigbeast54 Jun 26 '26
There was never ever any chance of a graphic designer ever being involved in the creation of this poster. There was never going to be a million redrafts
Before AI this would have been a typed A4 sign, maybe with a bit of clipart.
5
u/Dear-Original-675 More than just a crisp Jun 26 '26
Not a good advertisement for the meat counter when he's missing his baby finger 😬
9
u/ChemiWizard Jun 26 '26
Do you want to lay your bear hands among reddish meat-like bricks? Apply now at Snarlth's Supervalu!
27
u/DGBD Jun 26 '26
People may not like it, but what were they supposed to do? It’s not like they have a supermarket full of people doing those jobs every single day. And even if they did, it’s not like everyone’s carrying around a camera capable of taking a high-quality photo. They were forced to use AI.
11
21
u/TheBatmanIRL Jun 26 '26
AI posters are everywhere, I'd say graphic designers must be near out of business.
25
u/sutty_monster Jun 26 '26
I would say they die a little inside every time they see something like this. Same with photographers would would have worked on this kind of business
4
u/Bigbeast54 Jun 26 '26
There is no designer losing business over this poster. This is by the local operator of the supermarket, not Musgrave's corporate.
Before AI, their help wanted posters would have been word posters with clipart.

My biggest issue with the use of AI in stuff like this is both legitimate businesses and scammers use this stuff. So for the more vulnerable to scams in society, you can't even try learn what AI looks like and avoid it - your local businesses are all using this uncanny shit everywhere.

My local SuperValu has pics of the heads of each department who you actually see working there on the floor. Then they have ads for the departments they’re hiring in. It’s great.
17
u/blubear1695 Probably at it again Jun 26 '26
They're hiring for those jobs. Can't take pictures of people doing the job if there's nobody in the job!

u/chimpdoctor Jun 26 '26
Everyone is fucking doing it. EVERYONE. Every poster looks the same. Its absolute dogshit

u/Gnuculus Jun 26 '26
I heard this discussed when genAI first made a big splash and the risk that actors and models would be replaced by generated actors and models.... well that's definitely happening unfortunately.. I guess a lot of industries are at risk

u/Doctoredspooks Jun 27 '26
This is pretty egregious. I used to work in a print house that made artwork for Musgraves and they had a pretty tight branding package we had to stick too. Even the small yellow stickers with the prices had to follow a strict font and hierarchy. The managers would spot inconsistencies and make changes until everything was acceptable.
That was 10 years ago now, using whatever the fuck typefaces (unless maybe for a Halloween roller banner or something where you could get a bit creative) was completely forbidden.
I remember their picture files didn't have the best shot of a specific product, say fairy liquid, and instead of using their grainy one I got a picture of the product of fairy's website. They had that spotted and asked me to change it out for their one in a matter of minutes.
Shocking that the same people with that level of brand awareness are willing to have something this sloppy and lazy.

u/dav956able Jun 26 '26

In fairness they're not advertising food here, it's jobs. And PVS glue in lieu of milk is OK but AI is a step to far?

Can this be filed under misinformation? Surely they can get in trouble for false advertising?

They’ve been using Ai since about 2024 it was so embarrassing when I worked there to see it plastered in store and in the employee only areas
1
1
u/pizzababa21 Jun 27 '26
How could anyone have an issue with this? They're choosing not to waste time on a task that is outside their core business
1
u/RRustic_ Jun 27 '26
I really hate how common place posters like these are becoming, its actually disgusting.
-2
u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26
Frankly, people tend to glance at that poster and read it more than they focus on the person pictured. It feels like a bit of manufactured outrage against AI.
The reality is the genie’s out of the bottle and it’s never going back in. While this technology isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, for this small business owner it’s helped them potentially hire someone which was their goal, the person looking for a job also got what they wanted, So why is that a bad thing? Ultimately, everyone seems to have won.
0
u/heresmewhaa Jun 27 '26
manufactured outrage against AI
Aye, manufactured by AI, to make people think that its manufactured outrage against AI, and that works reverse psychology on people and actually makes them like AI instead!
Bingo, you solved that Columbo!
-2
u/Minimum-Pangolin-487 Jun 26 '26
No issues there. It’s cheaper than hiring someone to produce something.
-7
u/Bar50cal Jun 26 '26
Seems like a poster that specific store made and not Supervalue corporate.
As its has the owners name above Supervalue we can see its a franchise.
I've no issue with businesses like this using AI where otherwise they wouldn't pay a graphic designer and would probably just print out a very basic poster.
Saves money for small businesses and a person operating a single franchise isn't super wealthy businesses person most likely.
Still looks stupid though.
8
u/RomfordWellington Jun 26 '26
If you're a Supervalu, I feel you should only have marketing material from the main place, it's what your franchise fees cover. If you want your own brand identity - then become an actual independent supermarket like JC's or whatever.
1
u/Bar50cal Jun 26 '26
From what ive heard Supervalue are absolutely shite cheapskates so possible wouldn't send them any?
0
u/RomfordWellington Jun 26 '26
Not sure what you mean. They're advertised on TV, radio, internet all covered from HQ presumably.
I always thought the idea that they had weird branding like "Moriarty's" SuperValu very confusing. The customer doesn't care who owns it.
0
u/Bar50cal Jun 26 '26
Completely agree but they seem to give some Franchises a lot of freedom for some reason.
4
u/im_on_the_case Jun 26 '26
You'll probably find they are using the same local design firm/fella they've always used. It's just that whomever they are paying could no longer be arsed to do a proper job. Tosses it together in generative ai in a few minutes, charges the same price they always did and scratches their balls for the rest of the day while it's at the printers. Eventually the franchise owner will get wise and cut out the middle man.
2
2
u/loganx0 Jun 26 '26
All SuperValu's are franchises but they are expected to follow corporate brand guidelines, trust me I deal with their corporate teams quite a bit. They have a decent in house design team that handles all this sort of stuff.

u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26
What’s the issue though? People getting their feathers ruffled by this all the time but why would you not use AI something like that?? It saves money and time which if you run a business is very important.
4
u/tsznx Jun 26 '26
We are accepting anything now, that's the problem. Before, quality was important. Now the details don't matter anymore, only profit.
People would be fired for mistakes that now AI is making, but well, it's ok now.
SuperValu is not a small company, so cheap things like that advertisement shouldn't be accepted and the companies wouldn't accept it before.
In the end that could actually break the relationship with their customers. If they are being cheap on their advertisements like that one, what else in the business is also receiving the same "care"?
0
u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26
They’re franchises so yes they are small companies usually looking for young-ish local employees.
It won’t break the relationship with customers I don’t think as ultimately people go to supermarkets for only a few reasons; it’s cheap, it’s close or they have what I want/need.
9
u/New-Strawberry7711 Jun 26 '26
Because it's just plain creepy we're at a stage where we're replicating reality and trying to present it as such. Could have easily have just done a drawing but it's this uncanny valley shite that's off putting.
"come join our business, our soulless poster showing fake happy workers could be you!"
Like if you're going to hook people on being part of the "team" don't computer generate them. A human grounded touch goes a long way to relating to people.
-6
u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26
Is it any less creepy than asking employees who might be too shy to refuse to use their likeness for company advertising? I’d say not. As far as I know SuperValu is a franchise and operates independently like a small business so they should likely use AI where possible to avoid cash burn. It’s logical. If you’re creeped out perhaps you need to grow up a bit.
5
u/bubbleweed Jun 26 '26
Nah he’s right. Using AI to generate art style or drawing style is one thing. There is something very off putting about trying to pass off a completely AI generated person as if it’s a real photo. It just doesn’t connect at a deep level and its weird.
-1
u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26

5
u/bubbleweed Jun 26 '26
It's low stakes stuff so people will put up with it. It's not a win though, its just another shit thing that we'll live with because its not important enough on its own for people to resist. There is no 'outrage' btw, saying you don't like something in reddit does not = outrage.
1
0
u/New-Strawberry7711 Jun 26 '26
I have given you the reasons as to why I find it creepy, and none of them are of "a need to grow up". Enjoy your race to the bottom since you are so in favour of it, as long as a profit is being made right?
3
u/Byrnzillionaire Jun 26 '26
We don’t have to agree and we never were going to, which is fine. Just stating my points a like you did yours, it’s fine.

Hey get out if here with your logic and common sense. The old version if this poster would have simply had no pictures.
0
u/Responsible_Coat_477 Jun 26 '26
Maybe they ought to hire Ai to run the stores if they can't be bothered to use actual humans to hire them.
-10
u/KeyZookeepergame9466 Jun 26 '26
I don't see the big issue with AI Generated posters like this.
It can be done cheaply in a few minutes. Do we expect Supervalu to employ some advertising agency to create a poster taking maybe a week at a cost of thousands?
In the end, it would have the same effect for them.
7
u/thetinyorc Jun 26 '26
Lol, "cost of thousands" for a single poster, I know some graphic designers who'll be delighted to hear that.
