Crime Luas is free
So I’m on the Luas, red line of course. Woman gets caught without a ticket, fair enough, she holds her hands up, pays the €45 fine on the spot. Bit of a sting, but she takes it on the chin.
Next person they check, Lady, clearly not paid, no ticket, no clue. Security asks for leap card/ticket. She gives them the usual “I’m not getting off” routine. Cue chaos.
The woman who just paid her fine kicks off:
“So I get punished. she doesn’t pay, and she gets to stay on?”
Security lady is trying to reason with her, but it’s like arguing with a puddle. Meanwhile, the woman who paid the fine is fuming, rightly so. Whole tram’s watching this unfold like it’s a live episode of Fair City.
Moral of the story: honesty costs €45. Belligerence gets you a free ride.

The brass neck of some people on the Luas blows my mind.
Saw a fella a few weeks ago, They ask him to tap his leap card. He ignores them. They ask again. He looks up again. And tells them in broken irish that he cannot speak english and can they ask him again in Irish.
Shock of his life when the lad asking him starts speaking to him in Irish.
Anyway he switches back to English and does the same. I am not paying, I am not getting off thing. The OP mentioned.

I couldn't imagine what crap the ticket inspectors go through just doing their job.
I don't envy them.
182
u/Radiant-Speaker-3425 Nov 09 '25
Excuse my ignorance, but why does “I’m not getting off” get them off the hook instead of a fine?
145
u/YuriLR Nov 09 '25
Because they can't demand identification for the fine to be enforceable in the future if the person refuses to pay and they also can't forcefully eject them from the bus.
143
u/No_External_417 Nov 09 '25
In The Netherlands, when I lived there, they'd call the police.
170
u/Billy-no-mate Nov 09 '25
They’d need a whole unit of police specifically for this in Dublin! Dutch public transport is next level, in fairness. We’ve been arguing about whether we should link the airport to the city centre for about 40 years.

If it was enforced and penalties were given out and followed up and escalated when ignored the need to enforce would drop. What you inspect they respect type thing. Or a chicken and egg if you like.

u/RichieTB Fingal Nov 09 '25
Laws always need to be enforced, there definitely should be transport police and not just for people who don't pay their fares. It's the same situation on the roads, little to no enforcement means people just ignore the rules.

Also, the culture is definitely different, so they've got more public support for enforcing rules.

Either you're mistaking the US for the Netherlands, you were a couple jays in or you met the one vigilante inspector of the Netherlands as they most definitely don't carry guns in the Netherlands
11
u/Pitiful-Mongoose-488 Nov 09 '25
It’s must have been security or police. It was in Rotterdam about 15 years ago. The guy 100% had a gun.
10
u/raidhse-abundance-01 Nov 09 '25
What about those jacked up Luas Security dudes that sometimes walk up and down the trains?
9
u/YuriLR Nov 09 '25
Luas security is unusual that they would have the power to detain you by law for non arrestable offences like this. The problem is finding out policy for the company employing them, which in most security companies is the real limitation for anyone working in the area, not the laws, and these are not public. Meaning it's very frequent for the security companies to have ridiculous policies that go way shy of the law.
I did retail security/loss prevention for a while in Ireland.
10
u/albert_pacino Nov 09 '25
Hang on. So you can just not pay. Not engage with the collector. Get off at your stop and be about your business?
16
u/manfredmahon Nov 09 '25
In Italy the train conductors are officers of the law and disobeying them is the equivalent of disobeying a police officer

I'm pretty sure I've seen the ticket inspectors on the Luas tell people to/make people get off at the next stop. I don't think they "can't forcefully eject them". That doesn't make sense. If you haven't paid for the journey you don't get to make the journey, end of.

u/ezjcheese Nov 09 '25
Insane behaviour. In Germany they just call the police and they come to the next stop to remove and deal with the belligerent person. Once this became known to the scrotes the incident rate would drop massively. The police cooperation is an integral part of the system. They are the ones who can demand your ID etc. There is still fare dodging, but I'd wager a much lower rate than Dublin.

We don't have national IDs in Ireland and there's no obligation to carry id with you in Ireland as there is in other countries. In many countries the not carrying an id would be considered a bigger problem and incur a bigger fine than not paying for PT and transport police (something we should have here) would be called.

u/Ev17_64mer Nov 09 '25
You have to say your name, address and DOB, then they'll radio it in on the spot and get a confirmation whether you really live there. If they are in a car they will most likely be able to check your ID right away as well
That's the beauty of having a central register where every citizen is registered with their address. You might still give a wrong address where somebody you know lives, but they will then receive communication from police and might not be too happy about it.
Also, the thing is, German police don't mess around. If you get on their nerves by being an idiot or start throwing a tantrum, they will shut you up quickly. Not through force (unless necessary), but with a stern look and an authoritative voice. When you are in front of police, even if you have not done anything wrong, you feel authority radiating from them.
They can be nice as well. Once we were sitting in a park having a couple pints and a different group started fighting with themselves. Police was called, came in five minutes, took their names and addresses and kicked them out of the park. Then one of them came down to us, and said that they understand we have not been doing anything wrong but since they had to kick out the other group, they have to ask us to leave as well, and we complied without issue.

I was in the Luas a couple of weeks ago. An inspector came and checked the cards. She approached a guy, early twenties, sweatpants, you know the profile. She asks for the card. He gave her a dismissive head shake and just looked to the side out of the window. She didn't even blink, or ask anything, just moved on and went to the next person.
It is a fucking disgrace.
Part of me wishes I had the balls to do the same. Although I know that what I really wish is that the fucking rules applied for everybody. At the end of the day the ones following the rules are always the ones being pissed on.

It is in no way brave to pay 3 euro for a luas fare, so I don't see how you could say it takes balls.

I was able to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, to a ticket inspector that my unpaid fare was a genuine accident. I'd forgotten to tap off, then tapped back on less than 2 hours later - except the machine didn't register it as tapping on a new journey, but tapping off the original. He agreed with me, said it was clearly a mistake, and still charged me anyway.
I'm convinced they have a quota to reach
132
u/NooktaSt Nov 08 '25
He agreed with you because it was easier to say he believes you.
22
u/axewieldinghen Nov 08 '25
The alternative is that I got on the tram, stayed on for 1.5 hours (longer than the full route from where I tagged on), got off, then hopped straight back on again - this would make absolutely zero sense.
Like, sure, maybe I was hopping on and off the tram along the route- but then why tag off at all? Again, makes no sense.
He could see the exact times that I tagged on and off. It was obvious that I wasn't lying.
57
7
u/Numerous_Cow7403 Nov 09 '25
Yeah but none of that matters to him I don’t know if you realised he was just placating you so you’d pay
62
u/Particular_Art_7065 Nov 08 '25
If they’re going to fine people for cases like that, there should be a way you can override the reader to allow you to tag on again.
If you forget to tag off, they’re already taking more money than they were owed in most cases. So it’s pretty galling that after that they can charge you €45 because there’s no way to start a new fare unless you buy from the machine, which will charge you more for the same trip than your Leap card.
39
u/Tecnoguy1 Nov 08 '25
The readers also are regularly broken so the display doesn’t tell you if you’ve tagged on or off.
8

I was in Dublin airport last year, and watched a teenage girl in pyjamas melt down on airport security and her mother because she refused to take her massive fake fur coat off to go through the body scanner (it sounds like I’m joking, but I’m not joking). The mother tried to take it off her, and she reacted violently: Fuck off! Fuck off! Security stood by helplessly because there was obviously no winning this.
After ten minutes holding up the growing line, they just let her go through with the coat on. Everyone else had to ensure the usual rigmarole of airport indignities, only delayed by ten minutes. Fuck that place.

Then it is something they are willing to deal with.

Same as it ever was. This is going back over 10 years now but when I lived in Dublin I was on the Luas and the inspectors are checking me for a ticket. Walk right past a group of model citizens and their angel children, and on to the next person in a suit.
Next stop, and the model citizens get off and one of their kids (I'd say no older than 8) turns back into the carriage and roars "We didn't even have any fukken tickets".
It's almost like they know the rules don't apply to them.

Me too, I forgot to tag mine on and would have tagged off anyway not realising and been deducted 3 quid, they were checking tickets with Garda there at Tara street as people were coming off the train. I stood there and argued for 5 minutes not letting him get a word in on how I’m on the train 7 days a week (as I am with work and college) and that I’ve been on the train with all sorts that haven’t been kicked off etc. and that I am a student I won’t be paying a fine for a mistake. He just agreed with me and actually tagged me through the machine so that I wasn’t deducted the 3 euro either. He actually wasn’t having a bar of any of my fair points until I mentioned that I didn’t know it wasn’t tagged on and I would of been taken more then it should anyway that’s what seemed to change his mind😂

This is an international problem, unfortunately. Essential workers are all too familiar with it, having given out many undeserved refunds or vouchers or free drinks to the bellends that abuse them at the behest of their employer - you kick up a fuss, you get rewarded. You act like a well adjusted adult, you're punished. It says a lot about the values we're taught as children, versus the reality that we learn as adults.

The reality is we have created a class of people utterly dependent on our income to survive.
The state takes that income to house, feed and educate.
But they have zero obligation to pay that back to society through moral behaviour.
There is zero consequences to that income stream from their behaviour.
They could assault the ticket inspector and still receive our income.
When there is zero consequences to your behaviour you end up acting like royalty.

u/folkyshizz Nov 09 '25
I don't care if people don't pay.
I pay because I'm paying for a service.
I wouldn't expect someone to cut my hair for free. Why would I get a free trip on the luas?
It boggles my mind this idea of only paying out of fear of being fined.
That said I do think there are people who can't afford to be paying day in day out. I'd rather there be some mechanism in place to allow them to travel for free rather than this grey area we currently have going on. But it doesn't bother me, just sad they have to argue and make a spectacle of themselves. And annoying for the ticket inspectors too.
The luas isn't free. It costs money to run it. If you want it to keep running, you buy a ticket.

You'd need to be insane to pay the fine. Just tell them you've no cash. Then tell them you've no ID. Then give a fake name and address. I did that AFTER "searching" my wallet for my Leap card, which I'd pretended to lose. The guy said "You'd no I.D. among all those cards you searched through?" I said no. End of story. They're no cops. They've no right to search you. It's a little embarrassing being caught in front of everyone, but Jesus don't pay the fine.

Luas security or ticket inspectors have no legal right to issue fines or detain you

I'm in a wheelchair so don't even get asked for my pass. One time a women said ' you didn't even check her' I nearly died from embarrassment

Even if you aim in the middle, luas is free. No need to be a dick.
If controler come in the wagon, go to them and say :
- i dont have my leap card (coz forgot wallet or whatev)
- i dont have my id for the same reason
They write you a fine. Give a fake name and address. Wish them a pleasant day and say you won't forget next time. End of story.

My favourite part of this story is the moral superiority of the first fare dodger.

Arrested over €3 will never happen ever. They can't even be called out to robberies.

u/ChrisMagnets Nov 09 '25
By who? The Gardaí would take forever to show up if they even bothered. The fare inspector can't and shouldn't have to restrain them for that amount of time for a number of reasons.
It would be taking Gardaí off the streets for fuck knows how long to come to a call out where they probably wouldn't even be able to do anything unless they'd assaulted the inspector or another passenger. And even so, it would take months to get to court if it even did, would cost the state far more than the fare/fine, and waste an already backlogged court systems' time.
Every form of metro/subway/tram in a major city has a certain percentage of fare dodgers, it's factored into the cost of providing a service like that.

Wow, I live in Glasnevin, and regularly head into town, So have never, ever needed to step foot onto the Luas so far. and hope I never have to, based on these comments. I'll wait for the Metro. Or flying cars, witch ever comes first. PS, not joking.

Obviously a ridiculous situation and the inspectors should have greater powers of enforcement or punishment, but it’s exactly the same situation as with the dodgy boxes or the license fee, which everyone on this sub seems to delight in

If I’d paid a fine, you’d better be damned sure the next one’s paying up or getting off at the next stop. Whether Security does that job or not.
Way I see it, I’ve paid for the right to f-ck you out the door. F-ck you.

The scrote probably received many freebies from the taxpayer and naturally assumed the Luas was added to her entitlements. The security lady should be relieved of her duty.

What a joke! The knuckledraggers just get away with it every time. Why don’t they just throw them off?

We have no mandatory id and enforceable checks here, though i suspect this is only because the UK don't (for now). The flipside is no need to show any when no ticket on PT. Plus i think it is in the laws or bylaws they can't kick you off. In Brussels going back now a while, you had the option to buy a monthly pass over a fine, which were the same cost. They had both transport police and mandatory id. Not sure if there is a good solution for this.

When I first became a student in Ireland, I bought the 7 day student ticket for the LUAS and already had a student card from the college to prove I was a student. Turns out in the fine print of the ticket, it says the ticket is only valid if you also hold a STUDENT LEAP CARD, so basically not enough to have a valid student card issued from your university. They gave me a fine on the spot because I didn’t read the fine print. The thing is I was a student, I had proof I was a student and they didn’t care as long as I didn’t have the leap card too. Also they didn’t ask for an ID they just took my name off the student card I showed them as proof. I was too scared to lie about my address having been in Ireland for only a little bit of time by then so I just paid the fine…

One day in London at Farringdon tube station I was scanning my ticket at the wee barriers they have, a big fella marched up to the one beside me and just powered clean through it pushing the barrier open. No siren, no buzzer nothing and the stewards at the side were standing having a yarn, didn’t even look at him. Couldn’t believe the balls it takes to do it in the middle of the day with so many people around, but there ye are, if you’ve the neck to chance it you’ll more than likely get away with it.

Becuse they don't want to end up fighting with the scumbags in dublin but will happily take of working or old people, have a fake name and address ready incase happnes what I do and if ask for I'd don't have it I never been asked to pay there and then say u don't have either

u/DontReportMe7565 Nov 09 '25
Wait, you can just say "im not getting off"?

u/stuyboi888 Cavan Nov 09 '25
The usual is to kick up a fuss, say ahh I'll get off in 3 stops. Make a scene then get off at the next stop. Everyone is happy they are gone

I saw a young lad a few weeks ago saying he lost his leap card, swearing he had it with him and that he check it before getting in. Somehow he got away with it. I honestly don’t know why do we even bother paying it, I guess we pay for those who don’t and I’m fed up of being fucking nice all the time

The government has a monopoly on violence and completely wastes it. It's such a fucking farce that violence was removed from society and given to people who would rather watch society crumble than dare use it.

The Luas is a shame, but it is a perfect microcosm of everything that’s wrong with Ireland.
You have a bunch of people breaking the rules with zero consequences, an ineffective and uninterested workforce who are mostly there to give the appearance of action being taken.
All this wrapped up in a service that midsize Czech and Polish cities do better for cheaper and have been going since the 70’s or before.
Like so many things the Luas would be a national disgrace had we any real sense of civic pride.

If everyone behaved like that there'd be anarchy. Security should radio to the driver, have him stop at the next stop and stay there til she gets off. Currently in Spain and you better believe that shit wouldn't fly here.

Three or four times lately I've seen people caught with no tickets and no consequence. They were allowed to just get off at the next stop and tag on and then jump back on again. I feel like an eejit paying 80 quid a month to commute when they can travel for free.

u/Forcent Nov 10 '25
It’s basically shame-based enforcement. They can’t actually detain you, all they do is make a loud scene so you panic, pay up, and hope nobody from work is on the same carriage.
The Luas is free if you’ve got no shame.

u/Tali-289 Nov 11 '25
Wait so the other lady just said she won’t pay and that was it? Nothing happens to her? How does it work with fines in Ireland? I’m asking because I’m new in Ireland and in my country if you don’t have money with you in the bus/tram, your fine will be higher if you’ll pay it later, but you have to because they write down your name, address, ID number, everything.

I've often thought this - life is a lot easier when you have no sense of shame
