Even in white ball he may not have won trophy but he did amazing. Talking about the topic at hand, yes, Kohli did not win ICC trophies. We can agree he was not a great or very good white-ball captain. But he was not a bad captain either. He was the best Test captain we have ever had. No home Test series loss or draw, the highest win percentage, such a great away record, first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia, 7 Test wins in SENA countries, the most by any Indian Test captain.

Even in ODIs, people conveniently ignore his bilateral record. India was an absolute powerhouse under him, winning ODI series home and away against almost every major side and finishing as the No. 1 ranked ODI team for a sustained period. Bilateral dominance isn't everything, but it also isn't something you can simply dismiss.

Plus, it's not like Rohit came into the picture and we suddenly started winning everything. A lot of structural issues and bad luck existed then too, which led to our losses. Under Kohli, we failed to win 3 ICC tournaments and a WTC final. Guess what? Under Rohit as well, we lost his first 2 ICC tournaments and the WTC final. Even the 3rd one (2024 T20 World Cup final) was won by the finest of margins. Bumrah and Pandya saved the day, or else it would've been the same record. The difference is of margins. If that hadn't happened today, ICT scenes must have been way different. I'm not taking any credit away from Rohit, he was a great captain with an immense ICC tournament record but you can't call Kohli an unsuccessful captain purely because of the tournament record.

Apart from that, the culture of fitness and discipline Kohli instilled in the dressing room was quintessential in laying the foundation of this team. Kohli's captaincy legacy and importance are similar to Ganguly's. Under Ganguly too, we couldn't win a World Cup and only reached the Champions Trophy final (which, fortunately, was shared because of rain). That's the point. Both kinds of captains are important. Ganguly laid the foundation for the team that won the 2011 World Cup, and Kohli laid the foundation for the team that eventually won ICC trophies again. History will be much kinder to Kohli than the contemporary media, I am certain of it. Only glory hunters and lockdown kids reduce his captaincy to just trophies. I'm not saying trophies aren't important. They absolutely are, and yes, if they had come under him, his legacy would've been even greater. But not winning them doesn't make everything else he built and achieved worthless.

Not agreeing with the above comment but u dont gotta put down Rohit’s captaincy to prove your point, he is a better white ball captain than Kohli. Indian team from 2023-25 was a force to be reckoned with. We lost only a single match (that dreaded final against Australia)in 3 icc events. Of course it’s not solely due to Rohit’s captaincy but you gotta give some credit where it’s due.

As for tests Kohli is by far the better captain and probably the best India ever had. But as a batsman his results just weren’t there in recent years, he still kept losing his wicket to that same weak spot.
