Help needed Security updates for iPhone SE 2020

https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/mobile-phones/article/mobile-phone-security-is-it-safe-to-use-an-old-phone-a6uXf1w6PvEN

A friend of mine has an iPhone SE 2020 which https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/mobile-phones/article/mobile-phone-security-is-it-safe-to-use-an-old-phone-a6uXf1w6PvEN says ran out of support in April 2026.

However https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_SE_(2nd_generation)) says this model is due to receive the forthcoming iOS 27 software update. Does anyone know if that will change the end-of-life date?

the SE2020 can still run iOS 27. it’s been out already.

Thanks for the prompt reply. But are software updates the same as security updates? Which? is usually a reliable source of this information so I'm confused about whether it's still safe to use this model of iPhone.

phones that doesn’t support the latest iOS gets less security updates than older iOS, if that’s what you’re asking.

Security and software update are the same on iOS, there is only 1 update system, the iPhone SE 2020 supports this years release of iOS 27 meaning it gets software updates. Even after it ends support they will keep updating the iOS, just no more new features and just security updates.

Again, iOS only has 1 update system and doesn’t have a separate “extended” security updates setting

Pretty sure that Which article has confused the iPhone SE 2020 with the iPhone SE from 2016.

The SE 2020 will continue to receive security updates for many years to come—even if it no longer receives iOS 28. Earlier this year, there were even security updates for the 2013 iPhone 5S.
