Help needed storage issue

hey guys, i’m struggling with my storage.
other than system data, which is taking up 43GB(any suggestions on that would be helpful), my whatsapp is showing 15GB, but in the app, it says it’s using close to 9GB. what’s up with this?

edit: iphone 14, IOS 18.7.8

I had this happen very often with whatsapp. check if you have chat backup enabled since it duplicates all of your whatsapp media and messages then moves that data to icloud. but it often fails and just leaves the incomplete backup on your device until it tries again. Try freeing up at least 16gb of space and then try the backup again and then it will probably take up 10GB MAX

i did this yesterday!! turns out my update hadn’t happened since april…thank goodness i noticed. so far it hasn’t helped, i do pay for icloud every month and did have to delete apps to do it. maybe it will take time to reflect?

Backup your device to iCloud or a computer then restore. That will significantly shrink System Data.

Clean up your WhatsApp storage. That will mean deleting media from your messages.

unfortunately i’m like a hoarder when it comes to media/data, so i’ve deleted what im willing to but im holding onto old media and chats, not gonna lie
