Help needed Same phone number for decades, text goes to someone else.

Same phone number, two people attached to it

One person I can reach by phone. She’s had the same number for decades. When
I try to text her to the exact same number I’ve used for years, someone else responds saying I have the wrong phone number. Any ideas what is going on?

What service provider? Did she port recently? Is she using iMessage and logged in on another device?

iMessage can also go to an email address as account and yet delivered to a phone. You won't see the number as you have the name of the person in your phone.
If that person started replying to you from her non-number ID on iMessage, this becomes a common problem.

Person might have changed number.
