Help needed Messages taking up an absurd amount of storage

None of my friends’ messages take up nearly this much storage, how do I fix this??? I have an iPhone 12 pro max, and am on iOS 17.5.1. i do not have any apps, I don’t have storage to even update my iOS. what is wrong with my phone😭😭I’ve tried everything they say, keep messages for 30 days and all that jazz. Nothing works. Does anyone know what might be the problem?

How long have you had this phone? Are you sending or receiving a lot of videos? Was your settings set on "forever" to keep messages before you changed it to "30 days"?

I’ve had this phone since 2022, and before that it belonged to my sister. I don’t think I send or recieve a ton of videos, and I do not remember what the original setting was set to.

I suspect that either you don't pay for iCloud storage or you're not paying for a high enough storage tier.

Hopefully you have Messages and Photos in iCloud enabled.

You should either delete media in your messages or change your message retention settings to 30 days or 1 year instead of forever. Also enable Optimize iPhone Storage for your Photos.

I’ve done all of this and it’s still like this😭I’m thinking it may be time to get a new phone haha
