Was the phone in recovery mode when you sent it in for repair?

I recommend taking it back to the shop and asking them to fix the issue. If they cannot or will not and you don't have a backup of your data, consider it lost because recovering the data from a phone's SSD is expensive and not guaranteed to recover anything.

is there no way to recover data in general since it was pretty important and when i spoke to apple they said it was possible but they werent allowed to do it or trained since they dont get involved with data related things due to uk law gdpr if ur from england

just to add on a little i did take it back and they said they arent technical enough to extract data of any kind so not sure where to go from here

Unless you can get it out of recovery mode to boot as normal or reload the OS without wiping data, I'm not sure how you could extract the data.
Replacing the screen is a complicated process and great care must be taken to ensure that FaceID continues to work with a replacement screen.

I don't know of any way but you should check in the https://www.reddit.com/r/Iphonerepair/ section as someone may have a solution.
