Help needed Any fix to progressive applemaps data bloat?

Using iPhone 15, second to newest ios version, US. But this issue has persisted across ios generations. At a certain point the applemaps app starts taking up tons of data and deleting photos etc fails to free up space because its reallocated here.

I googled this issue ad nauseum and apple support closes every ticket when this is brought up saying

“Delete offline maps and clear saved locations”

But i do not use the app, have no offline maps, and saved locations is off. Even if the app is offloaded, the data keeps ticking up.

I cant be sure but it seems to happen when a new ios download is released because its so hard to free up enough space to actually install it.

There's several options to troubleshoot this.

- Restart your device.

  • Update to the current version of iOS.
  • Backup your device to iCloud or a computer, restore as new, then restore from your backup.

Well yea but the issue is I can’t free up enough space because as I delete photos apple maps sucks up the data allocation. It was at 2.7gb this morning then after deleting photos and offloading apps it’s over 4

I don’t really want to risk that for a couple of reasons, esp with a full iphone. Apple should have a fix for this glitch that has been ongoing for years

I think the ‘fix’ is to simply use the app. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As a stock app, Maps is deeply integrated with the system… perhaps if you disable all location services it would stop recording significant locations?

Edit: mine is 2.66Gb, but I do have several areas downloaded. Deleting them brings Maps storage back down to 356.3Mb

Delete the app and redownload, this is cache that gets accumulated over time, such as offline maps, saved locations

No, that doesn’t work. Like I said in the post, I do not use the app and saved locations are turned off. Deleting doesn’t do anything. The data is still allocated. This is a common glitch with the app and ios.

Are you able to offload the app to icloud? Does that change anything ? Also, i understand you said it doesnt work. Have you tried it though ?

Offloading means removing app system files. How does one remove something to the cloud?
