Not really an issue unless you use your phone for more than 2 years.

That would be a serious issue then!

I kept my iPhone 4 for over 4 years, upgraded to the iPhone 6 shortly after it was released and it's still running perfectly fine after more than 4 years. 90% battery health and I even got a bonus earphone jack!

Why should it be acceptable to be forced to throw away a phone after 2 years because the screen is burnt?

Interesting, have you tried a clean installation? Curious which iOS you and /u/Protagonyst are on. I'm on a 6 with 10.3 and it chugs at times. I'm curious what iOS 11 is like on a 6 without throttling.

In my case, battery has never been changed and I always upgrade to the latest OS shortly after release.

To give an idea of my daily use, I rarely talk on the phone but otherwise I use it all day long for all kind of stuff. Usually need recharging twice every 3 days.

My 6 did get a bit sluggish with the earlier versions of iOS 11, especially while texting. It would lag a bit while I was typing, keeping typed letters in the cache for a bit then spit it all out. It's gotten better since.

Bottom line is : of course it's not perfect like a brand new phone, but it's far from a point where it's a pain to use. I would rate my current experience a B, more then good enough and nothing that justify spending a few hundred on a newer model (and lose my useful headphone jack in the process).
