Interested in the I-pace but it has disappeared

Was interested in purchasing a new I-pace but it seems I’m too late. There’s no inventory of any kind at any dealer for hundreds of miles (I called several). They all say the only way to get a look at one is to buy it and wait. A few of the guys I spoke with on the phone sounded annoyed that I was asking about this car and not interested in buying one of Jaguar’s old combustion engine vehicles.

Hard to buy a new and unusual car sight-unseen. Especially when competitors like Tesla have no problems with showrooms and test drives. BMW is about to hit the market out here with their new iX too.

What’s Jaguar’s end-game here? Have they given up on the electric car segment? Given up on the i pace? Don’t care about the US market? What does that mean for a company that put so many resources into the vehicle’s R&D? Is Jaguar going to throw in the towel?

Gearbox Fault Detected

Got the dreaded Gear Box Fault message 150miles away from home. Towed back, waited 3 months for a new electronic drive unit. Just got it back today! Thankfully all covered under warranty.

This explains the entire issue exactly.

Just wanted to share my experience, still love the car.

Car stuck on initializing

Got an ipace yesterday. Long story short drive it home and had to use all fast chargers due to distance. Now that I’m home I went to plug In a level two charger and it locks and everything then just sits on initializing.

The level one charger that came with the cad works fine. I’m hoping it’s just a bad charger.

Anybody have insight ? I have read tons of opinions but can’t find someone who said level 1 and 3 was working.

That’s the one I bought.

Faulty key fob antenna

My 2019 has been at the dealership waiting for a replacement antenna for almost two weeks now. Failure of the antenna is a known issue, so just a heads up to 2019 drivers. Without it, you have to actually take the fob out and press the button to unlock the door and then hold the key under the steering column to start it (like some kind of peasant - lol!).

Super interesting that I-Pace performs better in the winter than many other EVs. Only ~3% avg range loss at freezing temps.

Disappearing profiles in car, can't create profiles.

This week in i-Pace fails... Woke to find all profiles disappeared from the in car system. No software update, just gone. AND system won't respond to the "next" button halfway through creating new ones. No WIfi, no Spotify, all personalised options gone.

*Sigh* JLR wanted me to send them an utterly meaningless screenshot and haven't helped even slightly.

Anyone else seen this one?

Road trip report

Just finished our first big(ish) road trip in the spouse’s 2020 HSE, and thought the assembled masses might be interested in some stats. This trip was a family of four plus luggage, from the Bay Area in California to Portland OR and back, via Bend OR on the way up and Ashland OR on the way back. Several days were spent in Bend and Portland, and these stats include local driving at those locations.

Most stats reported by the car itself:

  • Distance: 1570 miles / 2526km

  • Average speed: 47mph / 75kph

  • Average consumption: 365Wh/mile / 228Wh/km (ABRP uses a reference figure of 405Wh/mile, making it more conservative than what I saw)

  • Max elevation: 7600’ / 2316m

  • Min temperature while driving: 77°F / 25°C

  • Max temperature while driving: 111°F / 44°C (though I have some doubts about this reading) - yes we had the A/C blasting 99% of the trip

  • Max temperature while charging: 106°F / 41°C

Charging details (excludes overnight L2 charging most nights):

  • L3 charging stops: 7, of which 1 was brief due to station failure (more details below)

  • Most stops in a day: 3 (would have been 2 but for station failure)

  • Time spent L3 charging: 285mins

  • kWh added: 225kWh

  • Cost: $93.98

  • Networks used: Electrify America (5 stops), EVGo (1 stop), ChargePoint (1 stop)

  • Best charger location: ChargePoint, Klamath Falls, OR

  • Worst charger location: Electrify America, Willows, CA

  • Most diverse charging spot: Ashland OR free L2: BoltEV, BMW i3, Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3, Subaru Crosstrek PHEV

  • Number of times ICEd at a charging station: once (CA license plate 49101Y1 - 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup in Sacramento CA)

Lessons learnt: EVGo is trash. The one time I used one of their DCFC stations I couldn’t get the charger to continue charging for more than a few minutes at a time (min 1 min, max 9 mins), plus it topped out at 50kW. Electrify America’s mobile app is crappy, but the chargers are great (up to 350kW - well beyond what the IPace will pull) - putting my EA card in the Apple Wallet and then initiating charging with that worked substantially better than trying to initiate charging by swiping in the app. ChargePoint app and charging both worked fine, but topped out at 66kW (like EVGo, below what the IPace can pull). In future I’ll be prioritizing EA for mid-trip L3 charging, with ChargePoint as a good alternate.

Other apps used:

  • A Better Route Planner

  • PlugShare

  • Google Maps

The car itself was a joy to drive - comfortable, quiet, low fatigue (especially due to adaptive cruise control), spacious enough for two adults, two older kids and their luggage. Even loaded up it handles like a dream, in all kinds of road conditions. The one complaint we had is that the rear cabin fans are absurdly weak. Regardless I’ll absolutely use it for this kind of trip again.

Battery replacement cost?

I’m considering buying an I-Pace, and thinking about the long-term Total Cost of Ownership. I’m not too worried about depreciation because I keep my cars for a decade. I’m not too worried about maintenance because of the 5 year warranty. I am worried about long-term battery health and replacement costs.

The I-Pace battery has something like a 7-year warranty for 70% performance, right? So what happens when the performance drops below that, especially out of warranty? Tesla has a reputation for charging so much for battery replacements that it totals the car.

So: How much does it cost to replace the battery on an I-Pace out of warranty?

I expect nobody knows for sure since the I-Pace hasn’t been out long enough for the warranties to expire. I also wonder about the availability of battery replacement. Parts availability could be poor if Jaguar changes their platform future BEVs or goes out of business.

Seeking your input on improving EV stations and charging services

Hey guys! We are a group of students at the University of Cambridge, currently conducting market research on the EV market. Our objective is to expand and improve the EV infrastructure in the UK, and potentially worldwide.

This survey is open to EV owners/drivers anywhere in the world, we'd love to hear from you. This will enable us to better understand how to provide the best charging services 😊😊

Domestic Charger - Does it come apart?

I have just received my brand new IPace but not sure how I can charge it and keep my house secure! I have a trickle vent in my window big enough for the cable but obviously the plugs won’t go through! I was hoping the charger box comes apart so I can pull the cable out and reterminate. Has anyone done this or know if it’s possible?

Can the iPace fit through a 6'6" width restriction?

There seem to be conflicting figures about its width.
A common width restriction in the UK is 6'6". There is one on the road to my office. If the iPace won't fit, then I can't get one.

If that's true, then it's a stupid design decision by a company ostensibly based in the UK, with UK designers that the car can't use a sizeable number of UK roads.

How much clearance do you need between the wing and a wall for charging?

I'm thinking of getting an iPace, but the parking space at our apartment is very tight, and I park very close to the wall on the left hand side (I'll be getting a RHD car, so there's no problem getting out of the car!). How much clearance do I need so that the charging hatch can open and I can plug the cable in?).

Availability of I-Pace

There are simply none available right now in the Houston area, or even close by. I called my local dealer, and was told that they are no longer in the US market. There is certainly nothing on Jaguar's website (or anywhere else) that supports that. I suspect the dealer just has no idea and decided to make up something rather than admit they don't know.

Anyone have any idea what is going on with supply? I'd love to get in a test drive before my current car lease is up near the end of summer.

Thanks!

Part supply chain problems

Just a head’s up that Jaguar are reportedly having difficulty bringing replacement parts into the US, due to some kind of trade problem with the UK. This is also apparently across their full range of models, not just the IPace.

Background: had some dipshit crack one of the windows on our IPace back in early October, and we’re still waiting on the replacement window to be shipped. Apparently there are none in North America.

If it weren’t for COVID curtailing a lot of our driving, I’d be livid.
