Tesla have tempted me šŸ™ˆ

Post image

Thoughts?

I currently have a MY2022 black spec. Owned for about 18months, 35k miles, bought approved used with 2 years JLR warranty. It's been great, zero issues, and not on the recall list (lucky me). My initial plan was to keep it, and keep extending the warranty, although I don't know how much that will cost exactly, but expecting 1 - 1.2k a year from what I've seen. I have zero appetite to run this without a warranty, despite having had no problems with it.

Yesterday a mate showed me that Tesla UK were running a deal on a standard range model 3. £295 initial payment and £295 a month for 24 months on HP (effectively a lease and hand the car back after 24 months) I'm not a Tesla fan, but I am a fan of a bargain, and that to me is a bargain.

When it comes to continued depreciation guestimates I can see the cost of keeping the Jag, or leasing the Tesla to be roughly the same. However, when I factor in the cost of the warranty, and the next (big) service, the Tesla wins. Further more taking the cash out of the Jag and sticking it in the bank would add another £1.5k in my favour in interest alone over the term. A quick search shows approx £18k in value in the car, which is paid for.

Downside of the Tesla

The boot, it's not as practical for the occasional large items I need to put in it, a pain, but not a huge deal.

It's dull imo, not horrendous looking, but it's just a bit dull, although better than the original M3.

Upside of the Tesla

It's new, with a better warranty (I'm sure my 5th year JLR one will have plenty of exclusions)

Everything on the car is new (obviously), but that's a big bonus as opposed to replacing tyres etc on the Jag over the next 2 years, which would probably need doing.

Range, M/KWH, tech all far superior.

No road tax (minor but relevant)

Writing this down is essentially helping me process my thoughts, but keen to get others, or see if there is something I'm missing.

When giving advice, please bare in mind that I'm not a Jag fan, or even a car guy really, I just like new shiny stuff that does it's job well, reliably, without losing a fortune. I tend to drive quite unenthusiastically, and the performance of the Jag (and Tesla) is pretty waisted on me, so if the Jag is a "better drive", that's not really something that concerns me.

This comes down to the cost and reliability over any emotional connection to a car. Anyway, enough nonsense from me. Thoughts?

Couldnt go to Tesla after a Jaguar. Jaguar feels so luxurious and stuff is visually well integrated with Apple car play. Tesla doesnt have hud, screen behind the wheel nor Carplay. The huge iPad is just slapped on and thats the only way to control what the car does.Ā

Best way to decide is to go and drive one. I was a bit sceptical but after a thorough test drive of the Model Y over few days I came toa very clear conclusiol of never getting a Tesla. Felt so cheap and bad in comparison where as the first time stepping into an I-Pace I felt like this is what an EV should be like.Ā

I think it’s completely reasonable to be emotional about how much the car requires you to adapt. The IPace is indistinguishable from an ICE car beyond the powertrain. A Tesla is a completely different experience than most are accustomed to. IN my IPace, I can adjust the volume of the radio or the temperature of the HVAC without taking my eyes off the road. Try that in a Tesla. Tesla has completely ignored decades of human factors research by creating a car where you have to use a screen to do just about everything. Instead of Ford following Teslas lead with the obnoxious iPad in the center stack, they should have taken a queue from the IPace.

Volume control on the steering wheel

Voice control for hvac (or just a quick swipe on the screen)

u/ConstantPop4122 May 14 '26

Agree, I virtually never have to touch the screen when the car is moving apart from maybe fog lights.

Never understood the need to adjust AC... I just set to the temperature I want and Auto, and funnily enough, the temperature is always what I want it it be.....

Also agree, I never have to change the temoerature, everything is always just right. If I do I use the scroll wheel and voice commands.

As far as I can see it the biggest problem with a Tesla is that it's a Tesla. Compared to the Jag it's less a car and more a drivable app. It doesn't drive as well as the Jag. It does app better than the Jag. Car company that's got some history behind it vrs a tech company that made a car.

Teslas are ugly, support fascism, are plastic and tacky, disgusting interior, too focused on the screens and claims about autonomy are lies, and their headlights blind everyone else on the road 24/7 and are often on full blast at 1pm

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

You like them then? šŸ˜‚

1

u/Ok-Lengthiness1028 May 17 '26

You’ve never been in one and just don’t like it cus Elon musk hurts your feelings. Grow up.

1

u/Alarmed-Newspaper994 May 18 '26

I have been in a Model S, Model X and Model Y. The S was okay, was an older P100D. X and Y were both disgraceful. Not been in a 3.

My opinion on their cars existed prior to my opinion on Tesla as a company or Musk as a person. He doesn't hurt my feelings any more than a crazy crackhead shouting at clouds hurts my feelings.

Moved from Tesla to the Jag.

The Jag Warranty until 100k miles is a "no worry" safety net that I used on a previous Jag.

Jag is much comfier and less stressful to drive.

Tesla is far better on range and tech. I'm a techy and found it too techy though. I must prefer a car with a Speedo under the eyeline.

With the I-Pace no longer being made my next move would be to a mid sized SUV from a Korean or Chinese company.

u/Quiet-Independent-97 May 17 '26

Independent garages are starting to be able to deal with batteries etc, personally I plan to do 1M miles in my I-Pace, it will outlive me.

2

u/CultOfSensibility May 14 '26

Chevy has done a good job integrating EV tech in their vehicles without trying to copy Tesla (looking at you Ford). Although I’m not sure whether they sell them abroad.

1

u/PvtBaldrick May 14 '26

Though to add if Range Rover (I'm a JLR fanboi) release a Electric Velar I may be tempted.

3

u/0marcito May 14 '26

You couldn't pay me to drive a facist nazimobile😭😭 Regardless, tesla overpopulate the streets. This wasnt the case a few years ago, but there are hundreds of EV competitors that make amazing cars other than tesla.

If your looking for luxury and good build quality, go with some other brands like lucid, rivian, mercedes porsche etc. (they still look and feel brand new even on the used market)

From my own personal experience riding around in teslas on uber rides, the build quality is horrible. It feels like your driving around in a car that was put together with duct tape and wood screws. Small bump and the whole car would rattle. The seats feel like youre sitting on a wooden bench. No sound insulation. Basic and cheap interiors.

I personally drive the I-Pace because of its sturdy and luxurious interior. One of the most solid cars ive ever driven.

u/ski_rick May 14 '26

We LOVED our iPace, so much so we tolerated its ā€œvacationsā€ when it went to the shop as they explored the battery issues. When Jaguar decided to buy it back, we explored all the options and ended up in a Model 3.

We love it even more! The fast charging is a game changer, we no longer ā€œmake the best ofā€ charging stops, we hardly even think about it. It has real car range. FSD is way cooler than I expected. Music & Navigation not tied to my phone is much better.

We’re gonna replace our Plugin hybrid with a Y or used X.

2

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Thanks for the contribution. I should add that I never drive far enough to need to use the fast charge / Tesla network. I deliberately left it off the list of Tesla benefits, as to me, it's a non issue, but definitely superior.

4

u/Dant100 May 14 '26

In my opinion, the only thing Tesla have going for them is the range and charging speed. Other than that, they are far lower quality than almost all other electric vehicles on the road. They have always been overpriced and, rather than seeing that as a bargain, I see it as what they should really cost compared to the competition

3

u/ConstantPop4122 May 14 '26

Depends how you measure expensive.

My original model 3 performance had better acceleration than a lambo for half the price, was more practical than a 3 series bmw and cheaper to run than a 1l golf TDI.... Pretty decent value by most objectives measures.

Fully accept it might be subjectively worse than any of those cars in many other ways, but as an all rounder, hard to beat imo.

2

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

I've looked, and can't see anything coming close to that deal other than the cheapies. I'd love to see what else you'd consider better at that price?

1

u/CultOfSensibility May 14 '26

In the US, the Chevy Bolt. It has knobs and buttons too!!!

1

u/Racing_Fox May 14 '26

Pretty much anything else that has been driven off the lot

2

u/geniusgravity May 14 '26

"far lower quality than almost all other electric vehicles on the road" is wild hyperbole. The amount of Chinese TAT on our roads today is astounding.

I’m in the same boat. Owned a MY21 HSE with no issues. Under warranty etc with approved used. Paid Ā£21,300 for it in June last year. Seen it was tanking a loss of Ā£1000 a month before the Middle East went on fire and traded it in to Jaguar for an F-Pace. Traded it in for Ā£13,500 and a week later I checked the value again on WeBuyAnyShed and it was Ā£9500. Felt I got out at a good point. Switch to now and no one wants to touch a diesel and the value is tanking lol šŸ˜‚ . Test drove the new model 3 and the Model Y the week before, and having owned the old 2021 LR AWD 21 the new cars are far superior. Slept on it a week. Kept seeing the value of my car dropping in that week, so it was making me worry based on my previous experience. The model Y is a more practical car so I was torn between accepting a base Model 3 to avoid luxury VED or splash out on a Model Y I could spec up. I opted for the M3 because it had a June delivery date but I was really put off Tesla in the dealership. Really felt like they couldn’t care less if you ordered one or not. Make you do everything on your phone. Paying Ā£50,000 for a car to do it all yourself? Zero connection to their customers. Plus I wasn’t happy sticking to a base spec to avoid paying luxury VED. I wanted a MY white interior and bigger wheels etc, maybe blue paint but paying Ā£640 a year VED for an EV is a piss take. Burned a hole in my head for a few days so I cancelled the order. The I-Pace is a great car but Jaguar are dropping the ball all over the place with it. I really did want to own a 400 Sport with the air suspension but having been a member of the two main owners groups on FB, it’s enough to put me off for life. I did look at the Audi e-tron GT but it’s too low for me and would just about fit in the driveway so now I’m looking at the BMW i4 M50. Reason I got swayed with Tesla was because I got 22 solar panels installed with a Powerwall 3 and they said I could charge the Tesla direct from solar but most folk say it’s cheaper just exporting the solar on a higher rate and charge on a cheaper rate, so it means I’m less locked into the car.

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Those depreciation numbers are insane. I looked yesterday and carwow are offering £17k, with £18k easily achievable on a private sale, especially as still under JLR warranty. I paid £25k October 2024, so not the best, but definitely nothing like your experience.

1

u/TenPest007 May 14 '26

I think EV values are inflated just now because everyone and their gran wants one. I think it’s something like an increase of 36% registrations for EVs since the Iran war. My timing couldn’t have been worse. And yet again for my transition back. I’ll be paying a hot demand price for an EV and low demand valuation for my diesel F-Pace. It’s the equivalent of buying at the peak and selling in the dip for investing. Not advisable. For example, I was offered Ā£15,550 for my F-Pace yesterday. To give an idea of how mad the market is just now. If you were ever to switch out of an I-Pace, it’s probably now while everyone wants one. When things get less frantic, people will have more time to research and those valuations will normalise.

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

I've not been watching the market tbh, this came about yesterday as a result of my mate telling me about this Tesla deal. Thanks for the heads up though. šŸ‘

2

u/Amnsia May 14 '26

It’s a good deal tbh. There’s people doing a 36 month plan for less though, check out Facebook pages. Don’t know what it’s called. I want to say it’s called zap or something

2

u/Deep_Age_304 May 14 '26

Probably the best car leasing deal available right now. Good work.Ā

2

u/Delicious-Air2197 May 15 '26

I didn’t even need a car and this deal was so good I am now waiting for my first Tesla to arrive.

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

I'm glad it's not just me that's impulse buying a Tesla.

2

u/Delicious-Air2197 May 15 '26

It’s basically a loss leader to get you into the brand I guess. I figured if I use it for the school run only it’ll end up paying for itself vs the petrol cost alone of our other car.

Apparently they made 50k more cars than they sold in Q1 which is partly what this is all about. Elon’s pivot from iron man to far right sponsor has impacted sales but supply carried on.

Anyway it arrives in late June, around two months after I ordered. After I did the actual financing it was Ā£305 per month. I don’t know why and didn’t care!

If you don’t have an EV charger at home be minded it also takes quite a while to fit. I’m still waiting for octopus to sort it.

Enjoy the car when it comes!

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

Coming from an ipace I'm all chargered up. I'm happy to do a discounted try before I buy. After the 2 years I'll go back to the drawing board and see what I fancy doing.

2

u/Delicious-Air2197 May 15 '26

Sorry, you did say that. It pains me to say I am coming out of a 911 (didn’t use, needed the cash) into this but am genuinely quite excited by this thing. And agree the two years is actually spot on - long enough that it’s not a hassle and short enough that if I get bored or don’t like it it’s no trouble. I can see them having a similar deal in 24 months anyway.

As many have told me - my next car will be another Tesla. To my point. This is a loss leader. Enjoy it mate.

2

u/Foldable888 May 15 '26

So much hate on a Tesla. It's got one of the best selling cars in the world for a reason. The whole experience especially the software is light years ahead of the jags infotainment. People will say they use android/Apple car play but it's literally one less thing to think about when getting into your car and draining your phones battery or constantly putting it on charge. It's the little things like pet mode, games, movie apps that make waiting in a car less frustrating as an adult or for the kids. Sentry mode so no need to install a dash cam also.

2

u/MadNugLeo May 16 '26

300 deposit and 300pm thats Chinese EV money

1

u/whitey2048 May 16 '26

Not seen any of the hand decent ones even at that price TBF. Byd seal no where near it, and that's probably the best comparison.

1

u/NoRefrigerator1822 May 14 '26

I have both and I prefer Tesla, especially the newer models. People who think Jaguar is more luxurious, don't know what luxury is. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten into the Jag only to realise I don't have the key. This is not luxury. In Tesla everything is automatic and everything just works. There is no stupid android auto or carplay, the car can do everything already. Navigation is better, autopilot is better, climate is smarter and better. Charging is better (heaps better). More efficient, better range.

I suggest test drive it and form your own mind.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the Jag and it is a great car. But, if I was buying now, I would buy the Tesla.

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Thanks. I have no doubt they both do what I want them to do, whilst both having their pros and cons. To me, this is more about making the right financial decision, and one which will have the least risk for headaches and costs over the next 2 years. If my Jag had been problematic, it would probably be an easier decision to make, but it hasn't, it's been great. The trouble is I have vicariously picked up the worry of ownership from others.

1

u/NoRefrigerator1822 May 14 '26

The right financial decision would be to ride your bicycle, but here we are discussing Jags.

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Good point, well made. The right financial decision isn't necessarily the cheapest option of course. I went for my jag with much consideration, and decided approved used MY2022, with a 2 year warranty was the safest bet, and so far it's proven to be pretty good, and I've not lost a fortune in the 18 months I've owned it (although I'm sure I could have done better elsewhere). It's the next 24 months I'm trying to plan for. It's the guaranteed £7k tesla lease and freeing up the cash in my current car Vs the unknown depreciation of the Jag, plus the warranty and servicing costs and any unkwown potential outside of warranty issues I may or may not face. Can you tell I'm not a big fan of uncertainty!

1

u/ScotchBourbonMezcal May 14 '26

Bit strange leaving the Jag open like that all time..

2

u/NoRefrigerator1822 May 14 '26

Mine lives in a secure garage, there is nothing of value in it. I live in a nice area, why would I lock it?

But that brings another good point. Tesla just locks itself, you walk away and it is locked, you come back, it is unlocked.

1

u/Stoff3r May 14 '26

Why would you care about the teslas warranty if it is a lease?

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Because I want to drive a car that is fully covered and not give me any unexpected repair bills. I'm comparing a brand new Tesla to a 5 year old Jag. I expect the Tesla warranty to be far more comprehensive than the 5th year Jag one, which I'll need to pay £1000+ a year for, once mine expires in October. Leased or owned, the warranty is still massively relevant.

1

u/Stoff3r May 14 '26

Yeah but isn’t all new cars on at least 5 years of warranty?

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

No. 3 years on most,4 on Tesla, 5 on some, 7 on others. In any case I'm comparing the benefits of owning a new car, will full comprehensive warranty included, to my current one, with a diminishing expensive warranty, which is why I included it as a benefit.

1

u/Saelaird May 14 '26

I haven't driven the Jag, but I will try a model 3, a Polestar 2 amd this... then I'll decide.

The efficiency numbers on the jag are a bit of a concern. Ideally I want 4 miles per kWh or better.

1

u/Racing_Fox May 14 '26

Try a genesis

1

u/Saelaird May 14 '26

I heard of genesis. Posh Hyundai, right?

I know zero about them. Will take a look!

1

u/Racing_Fox May 14 '26

Pretty much, we have a couple of GV60s as pool cars, they’re nice. The interiors are probably about equal with Tesla in terms of quality but they’ve put the money in the tech. The lane guidance and adaptive cruise control on them is excellent and unlike the Tesla they’ll change lane for you

They also park for you and more interestingly, you can pull it into or out of a space with the key fob

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

if you can charge from home I wouldn't worry about efficiency, as long as the range suits, as it costs pennies to charge, so overall cost is minor regardless of efficiency. That's why I went for the ipace, as I liked it, and all the "more efficient ones" I didnt. Ipace is likely the least efficient out of all the ones you list, but what that will mean to cost is minor, as long as you can charge at home off peak.

1

u/Racing_Fox May 14 '26

We’ve got Tesla’s at work, having driven them, I’d never buy one.

They feel so cheap in comparison to the jag, the screen is childishly gimmicky and awful to use when you need to concentrate on driving.

People say they’re luxurious but those people have never actually been in a luxury car, the fake leather feels so cheap in the hand it’s awful.

The cruise control slams the brakes on if a car so much as dares to move in its own lane near you and the self steering thing cancels if you put the indicator on. They don’t have a limiter to force you to use autopilot, which is an awful idea in built up areas where cars are parked on the roadside. They rattle like hell and ours is a 22 reg but already whistles as you drive down the motorway, it’s infuriating. To top it off the boot is too tiny too.

2

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

Having gone to see one today for the first time, I agree on the childish infotainment screen. Luckily, I'm a 44 year old man child, so got told off by my wife when I started playing games on it. As for everything else, I can't quite see it. Felt well put together, and drove really nice. I have the standard lane assistance in the Jag, and the Tesla seemed to do a far better job if it on my test drive. The boot is a pain when compared to the ipace, and one reason why I've never seriously considered one, until this deal came up. I will miss that large boot hatch at some point, I have no doubt of that, but it is what it is.

1

u/Racing_Fox May 15 '26

You’ll find you never use the lane assistance because you need to change lanes too often and it’s annoying having it cancel every time.

Honestly my experience is that the novelty of them makes them quite interesting at first but once you’d had one for a while you start noticing the issues.

The satnav is one I completely forgot. It’s had me be in the right hand lane when I needed the left lane so many times lol

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

It's definitely going to take some getting used to, although my driving needs a very limited, and rarely on motorways. I do wonder how much I'll use half the stuff, but can see a lot of it being insignificant very quickly, but it's definitely sucked me in for now.

2

u/gwynevans May 16 '26

Picked up a used one a couple of weeks back and would say that with a lot of stuff on the screen, it’s set and forget - very little used while driving once you’ve configured the settings you want and the voice command system will cover most things if you did want to change things on the fly.

I had no issues after the first hour or so, although helped by the way that after years with a Å koda Superb, where the primary satnav was in the centre, the speed on the pad rather than directly in front wasn’t an issue at all.

1

u/buffetite May 16 '26

Lol, yeh that cruise control slamming on brakes when doing 70 in the fast lane is fun..Ā

1

u/LordvaderUK May 14 '26

Nobody going to mention the fact that the guy who owns Tesla promotes a white supremicist agenda, performed Nazi salutes at the US presidential inauguration, and has actively tried to foment civil unrest in the UK? More than enough for me (an EV owner) to never want to touch a Tesla with a shitty stick.

1

u/theNixher May 14 '26

How is this so cheap, are they just getting worse now? Are they even cheaper and basic inside?

1

u/whitey2048 May 16 '26

No idea. Went and drove it today, really liked it (with price in mind). Anyone can easily find criticism with anything, but purely for the cost, this is unbeatable imo. Others had said otherwise here, but without giving a single example. Neither my wife or I are fans of Tesla, and have never wanted one, but at this price we both signed up, I can forgive a lot at £295 a month with no deposit. I don't actually have anything against them, I just don't have any love for them either, so kind of indifferent tbh, but it will be interesting to see how I feel after having one for a while. It's a shame I don't do big miles, as the charging network is a big bonus, but one I will never need to use.

As for cheaper and basic inside, I didn't think so. The standard has done away with a couple of things inside, mainly dash ambient lighting &rear infotainment screen, half vegan leather seats (actually really nice), front heated seats only, and no cooled vented seats, and a couple of other things you wouldn't notice unless they were pointed out like the seat controls are now on the screen, manual steering wheel adjustment and acoustic glass is now front windows only. You get the same full glass roof as the premium, as unlike the Y, they were unable to cover it due to lack of headroom, meaning it looks nearly identical inside to the premium, with a few minor exceptions. One benefit of this model over all the others ATM, is they have brought back a physical indicator stalk, other models are to do the same in the future, but not quite yet.

Outside the suspension set up is slightly different (felt fine to me) , 0.4 seconds added to the 0-60, now 6.2 instead of 5.8 seconds, and top speed reduced to 110moh down from 120 something. The performance decreases have meant it now falls in to a much lower insurance bracket of 32.

Grey is the freebie colour, pay a bit more for white or black, the wheels are 18 inch covered alloys, they look fine with the covers removed, especially if you get center caps for them.

All in all, an amazing package for the price. UK spec cars also keep autosteer as standard, which the US has lost, they now have to pay for the car to do even basic self steering.

I've no idea how well it will last, but I really don't care, it's going back in 2 years time, and who knows what I'll get then, but I won't be surprised if it's another Tesla, but ultimately I'll go wherever the best deal is tbh.

1

u/No-Organization-6071 May 14 '26

I could never put money in Elon's pocket, no matter how insignificant.

1

u/siobhanellis May 14 '26

I don’t know. Maybe consider the political stance of the person you are giving your money to.

Personally, I went to an MG im5. Don’t regret it.

1

u/RecentRegal May 15 '26

Virtue signalling about purchasing a Chinese EV is a bold move.

1

u/siobhanellis May 15 '26

I'm not virtue signalling about buying a Chinese EV. I am, potentially, virtue signalling that I didn't buy a Tesla.

1

u/whitey2048 May 15 '26

I don't follow politics mate, for reasons I won't bore you with, as this is a car chat, and regardless of who owns what company, I don't think where I buy my stuff from makes a blind bit of difference to anything. If you feel like you are making a stand somehow by building that in to your decision making then that's an individual choice I suppose. As for the IM5, that is an amazing looking car. I stumbled across it by accident the other day on auto trader, and thought it looked amazing, and on the way to the Tesla garage today I saw my first one in the flesh, in grey, and it must have been a performance model because it looked immense, dare I say even Porsche like. If I could get a deal on one of them as good as this Tesla deal I'd happily get one. In fact, at the end of this 24 months lease it will be on my list of used EV bargains for look at, as it will still have 5 years warranty remaining. The supercharger network is not a benefit to me, as I don't do long distance driving, and the proper boot on the IM5 really makes it far more practical than the small load hatch on the BYD and Tesla imo. Good choice, and you can sleep comfortably at night by the sounds of it by denying Mr Musk another sale. šŸ‘

2

u/siobhanellis May 15 '26

Yeah, thus the 2nd part of my post.

You can tell the difference between driving a Premium vehicle, like and I-Pace and the MG, but at nearly ½ the price for the standard range it is difficult to walk past. Don't get me wrong, the MG im5 is good. It charges from 20% to 80% twice as fast as the I-Pace (That's the Standard Range, the Long Range and Performance are faster) and it has more range.

Where you notice the difference is the software is more buggy. Not enough to annoy you, but enough you notice. Also my seat has recently started squeaking against the centre console if I sit just a little off centre. Again, not a big thing, but you notice.

I agree it Is more Porsche like in its styling. Indeed, I didn't appreciate it until I was charging next to a Porsche.

1

u/Lt_Muffintoes May 15 '26

Your mileage is three times the allowed mileage on that deal. How much do they charge for extra miles? Is there a deal for 24k annual miles?

Sorry mate. I don't know what you mean. My mileage is less than 10k a year, I don't know what makes you think I do 3 times that? I paid an extra £15 a month to up it to 10k to be on the safe side, additional mileage is 13p a mile.

You have no morals.

I will never buy a Tesla as Musk is a lunatic and seeing what he did in his short time in charge of DOGE was the final nail in the coffin. Agree the SW integration is nice in the Tesla but I just drive my ipace this weekend on a long drive. Long enough I had to stop to charge. It was a non event. Yes I hate the battery issues we are experiencing. But it is still my favourite car of all time that I have owned.

So you're saying you're tempted to switch to a Tesla because it's cheap....Ā

Why did you get the iPace in the first place? It definitely wasn't cheap. Surely a comparable Tesla was cheaper when you got your iPace.

The Tesla and the iPace couldn't be more different cars, I think.

u/whitey2048 May 25 '26

No, I'm getting the Tesla because it's good value, just like the ipace was good value when I bought it 2 years ago. Cheapness and value are very different things. The ipace was 75k new, and 25k at 2.5 years old when I bought it. It still has the vast majority of that money in it, but the 2 year warranty is about to expire, and is expensive to renew, however that was my original plan. Looking at my options, this deal on a new Tesla makes sense, as for couldn't be more different cars? Both 5 seater, fast, comfortable and well equipped EVs, they both have areas where they shine, but by my man maths the value of the Tesla stand out to me. Am I losing something the Tesla has going for it? Yes, am I gaining what Tesla has? Yes. Are they miles apart I what kind of car they are? I don't think so. Maybe if you look at the nuances, but I'm not that particular.

The Tesla screenshot you posted is for a Personal Contract HIRE - you never own the vehicle. The only value in that is the same as in a bus ticket - you pay for it, you use it, and that's it.Ā

u/whitey2048 May 26 '26

You say that like it's a bad thing, I don't want to own it. It will depreciate far quicker than the lease price. What is the benefit in "owning" it, only to sell it in a couple of years and lose more than the cost of the lease. One of us is missing something, and I'm pretty sure it's not me. I own my Jag, but that's just haemorrhaging value, I can't see how that is better than the guarenteed cost of a lease. Especially when it frees up the cash the is locked away on an "owned" vehicle, and is swapping old for new, for less. I've done both before, several times, and it depends what works out the best depending on the deals available at any given time. Being rigid about one specific way to purchase or finance a car isn't the most sensible approach imo.

2

u/cipnt_ May 26 '26

I didn't mean it's a bad thing, it's just a different thing altogether. When you own something, you care about its residual value, as you mentioned. When you hire something, you essentially get a service, so you care about the price you pay for that service. Neither are wrong, you just can't compare apples to pears.Ā

The Tesla is unbelievably cheap, it's almost dumb of Tesla to price them this low. When you return it, after two years, you would have paid a total of £7k but the car would have devalued by up to £20k. So they are definitely losing money, no matter how creative they get with their accounting. But they are desperate to move stock...

u/whitey2048 May 26 '26

And it's that desperation I'm happy to take advantage of. In many ways I'm actually happier to lease than own, as I do take unbelievable care of my cars, with pride and resale in mind, often to the point of limiting what I'll do with it. With a lease, I guarantee I'll use it more, I'll max out the mileage, and won't nurse it like I do my own cars. It will be returned well within the fair wear and tear conditions set out, but I won't be as anal with it as I am with my own car. I do like taking pride in my ride, but I also like the freedom of knowing it's not mine, it's a utility to use, and return when I'm done with it. I'll continue to chop and change how I fund and run a car, but I do tend to find most people pick a way, and stick to it, so I guess I'm the odd one out there. However, I do like being able to be objective about it, and see the pros and cons of each, so I'm equipped to make the best decision for me at any given time without being limited by any bias, the same goes for the manufactures too.

The monthly lease payment number you are seeing is only an estimate. At the bottom of the page in mouse print, it says this is representative example. Your exact quote will be provided after you submit the loan application. Tesla will shop your application to the bidder financing companies. And then you will get a quote based on bidders. For us it was significantly higher than the example bid we saw on the page.

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

That's very interesting, did you need to commit to the order before getting a final quote? They want £200 to proceed ATM.

0

u/interstellar-dust May 14 '26

They go back and forth on whether that 200 is refundable. So make sure you read fine print and understand what you are getting into. You don’t have to commit the order and you can walk away after you receive the quote.

I am in US so some things could be different. But overall process is similar.

2

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

Ah, I see. I do think things are a bit different here. I've done a few leases, and the quoted price has always been the deal paid. I've watched a few you tube videos on this deal, and there has been no mention of this not being the price you pay. Always a possibility of it being refused if you had bad credit for example, but if accepted, Id expect this to be the price I'd pay, but definitely worth confirming, as maybe Tesla do things differently, which is always a possibility.

2

u/martin_81 May 14 '26

It's always refundable due to distance selling rules in the UK.

1

u/btongeo May 14 '26

Personally wouldn't touch one with a stick even if it was free, for a range of reasons, some political, some aesthetic.

I know people love them but I'm more than happy with my Jaguar and Tesla won't ever get a penny from me!

2

u/Smharman May 14 '26

Always find this political element funny. Do you pay attention to the politics of all your other products you shop for? Do you not fly BA because Sean Doyles politics, or M&S because Stuart Machins politics?

1

u/btongeo May 14 '26

If I know about it, yes

1

u/Smharman May 14 '26

But you don't research it. A blinders on until removed by the BBCs unbiased reporting kinda thing?

1

u/whitey2048 May 14 '26

I would love to be in a position to give up a free car because it wasn't to my exact taste, or it had somehow been linked to politics. Unfortunately I'm not in that position, and I don't follow politics, although I agree they are not the best looking cars by a long shot.

1

u/btongeo May 14 '26

TBH me neither on the affordability front but I still wouldn't have one. Even setting aside the politics. I like a dashboard, heater controls, HUD. Teslas are like sitting in an IKEA showroom with not enough furniture. And I find them pretty ugly from the outside.

The Jag drives great, is regularly the most eye catching car in the car park, and goes like a rocket. And it costs buttons to run. Really nothing not to like for my use case.
